Introduction: body image dissatisfaction has been associated with poor nutritional status and unhealthy weight management strategies. This study determined the prevalence and relationships between body image dissatisfaction, nutritional status, and weight management strategies among university undergraduate students in Lagos, Nigeria.

Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study employed a multi-stage sampling technique to select 865 undergraduates in Lagos.

COVID-19 vaccine uptake and associated factors among adolescents and youths: Findings and implications for future vaccination programmes.

Adolescents and youths are a key part of the population that needs to be protected against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This is because they are more likely to spread the virus to vulnerable individuals. In view of these concerns, this study investigated the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines and associated factors among adolescents and youths attending secondary schools in Zambia.

Trio-based GWAS identifies novel associations and subtype-specific risk factors for cleft palate.

Cleft palate (CP) is one of the most common craniofacial birth defects; however, there are relatively few established genetic risk factors associated with its occurrence despite high heritability. Historically, CP has been studied as a single phenotype, although it manifests across a spectrum of defects involving the hard and/or soft palate. We performed a genome-wide association study using transmission disequilibrium tests of 435 case-parent trios to evaluate broad risks for any cleft palate (ACP) (n = 435), and subtype-specific risks for any cleft soft palate (CSP), (n = 259) and any cleft hard palate (CHP) (n = 125).

An Analysis of the Effect of Stroke on Health-Related Quality of Life of Older Adults With Coronary Heart Disease Who Take Aspirin.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of coronary heart disease (CHD) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among individuals taking aspirin, as well as to explore the potential association between stroke and CHD on HRQoL.

Method: A total of 17,106 respondents aged 50 years and above who reported using aspirin on "some days" or "daily" were included in the analysis. Among them, 4,036 individuals had a history of coronary heart disease.

Objectives: This study identifies barriers and provides recommendations to improve asthma care in children across sub-Saharan Africa, where qualitative data is lacking despite high rates.

Design: One of the aims of our National Institute for Health Research global health research group 'Achieving Control of Asthma in Children in Africa' was to use qualitative thematic analysis of transcribed audio recordings from focus group discussions (FGDs) to describe barriers to achieving good asthma control.

Setting: Schools in Blantyre (Malawi), Lagos (Nigeria), Durban (South Africa), Kampala (Uganda) and Harare (Zimbabwe).

Testing the validity of a new scale designed to assess beliefs and perceptions about colorectal cancer and colorectal cancer screening in Malaysia: a principal component analysis.

Objective: To conduct a cultural adaptation and validation of the Champion Health Belief Model Scale (CHBMS) for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening (CHBMS-CRC-M) in order to assess and investigate perceptions and beliefs about CRC screening in Malaysia.

Designs And Participants: The results from an evidence synthesis and the outcomes from an expert panel discussion were used to shape CHBMS scale content into an assessment of beliefs about CRC screening (CHBMS-CRC). This questionnaire assessment was translated into the official language of Malaysia.

Methods: Using a retrospective, observational study design, the in-patient record of all stroke patients admitted between September 2014 to September 2018 was retrieved and rigorously reviewed.

Clinical characteristics and predictors of human mpox outcome during the 2022 outbreak in Nigeria: a cohort study.

Background: Research from sub-Saharan Africa that contributes to our understanding of the 2022 mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) global outbreak is insufficient. Here, we describe the clinical presentation and predictors of severe disease among patients with mpox diagnosed between Feb 1, 2022, and Jan 30, 2023 in Nigeria.

Methods: We did a cohort study among laboratory-confirmed and probable mpox cases seen in 22 mpox-treatment centres and outpatient clinics across Nigeria.

Genetic determinants of periosteum-mediated craniofacial bone regeneration: a systematic review.

Background: Periosteum-mediated bone regeneration (PMBR) is a recognized method for mandibular reconstruction. Despite its unpredictable nature and the limited degree to which it is understood, it does not share the concerns of developmental changes to donor and recipient tissues that other treatment options do. The definitive role of the periosteum in bone regeneration in any mammal remains largely unexplored.

Associations between mental health challenges, sexual activity, alcohol consumption, use of other psychoactive substances and use of COVID-19 preventive measures during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic by adults in Nigeria.

Background: The aims of this study were to assess: 1) the associations among sexual activity, alcohol consumption, use of other psychoactive substances and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic; and 2) the associations between COVID-19 preventive measures, alcohol consumption and use of psychoactive substances.

Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data collected from adults in Nigeria between July and December 2020. The variables extracted included change in sexual activity, alcohol consumption and use of other psychoactive substances, COVID-19 preventive behaviors (wearing face masks, washing hands, physical distancing), anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sociodemographic variables (age, sex, education, HIV status, employment status).

International Delphi Consensus Study on disposable single-use endoscopy: A path to clinical adoption.

Background/objective: Increasing infectious rate estimates and low microbiological surveillance affect safety of gastrointestinal endoscopy globally. Single use endoscopes and accessories have been claimed to improve safety, but there is lack of data on their indication and sustainability. We aimed to identify a series of best practice recommendations for the use of single use endoscopes and accessories using a modified Delphi.

Provider and facility readiness for age-friendly health services for older adults in primary health care centres in southwest, Nigeria.

There is a growing focus on interventions at the health system level to promote healthy aging and provide age-friendly health services (AFHS) in low- and middle-income countries where populations are aging. This study aimed to determine the provider and facility readiness for AFHS. We developed and implemented surveys to collect PHC facility capacity and readiness to deliver AFHS and a KAP survey for facility healthcare workers based on guidelines from the WHO age-friendly tool kit and questionnaires from other studies.

Design and field evaluation of a lateral flow cassette device for point-of-care bilirubin measurement.

Neonatal jaundice is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and neonates born in low and middle-income countries bear a disproportionate burden. We previously developed a low-cost, point-of-care system to measure total serum bilirubin (TSB) in neonates. This device was effective at detecting and monitoring jaundice; however, the disposable strips were difficult to produce at scale.

Trends in Obesity-Related Mortality and Racial Disparities.

Background: Across the globe, obesity stands as a prominent public health concern, linked to a heightened susceptibility to a range of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. This study reveals a disproportionate impact of obesity on African American (AA) communities, irrespective of socioeconomic status. Structural racism plays a critical role in perpetuating healthcare disparities between AA and other racial/ethnic groups in the United States.

Nutritional knowledge, dietary habits and nutritional status of adults living in urban Communities in Lagos State.

Background: Malnutrition is a major threat to the world's public health. While under-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies persist, obesity is increasing worldwide. Although malnutrition has been extensively researched among children, it has become of increasing concern among adults because of the relative increase in the prevalence of diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Quality of Life and Life after Amputation among Amputees in Lagos, Nigeria.

Background: Amputation is a life-changing surgical procedure that can cause significant disruptions in the quality of life of an individual.
