Hemolacria is a very rare entity which literally means "bloody tears". Conjunctivitis, capillary hemangioma, conjunctival telangiectasia, trauma, retrograde epistaxis and nasal and paranasal neoplasms may play a role in its etiology. In our case report, a 11-year-old female patient who presented with the complaint of bilateral epistaxis accompanied by bloody tears that had been present for 2 years and whose endoscopic examination revealed hyperemia and increased vascularity in the nasal cavity mucosa was discussed together with a review of the literature.

An antibacterial drug, ciprofloxacin, has been reported to modulate the inflammatory and immune responses on monocytes. Our objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of ciprofloxacin in the prevention of myringosclerosis that is created by myringotomy in rats and to compare it with prednisolone. In this study, 24 healthy Sprague-Dawley type rats of age 3-4 months and 250-300 g weight were used.

The voice prosthesis is today the most widely used and accepted method of voice restoration following total laryngectomy. Fortunately, the cases in which it is necessary to temporarily or definitively close the fistula are rare (request of the patient, leakage from the fistula, aspiration pneumonia). Herein, an analysis is made of these cases and the surgical technique personally developed for the closure of tracheo-oesophageal fistula is described.

Patients with chronic otitis media (COM) may have profound sensorineural hearing loss either due to the disease process or secondary to a surgical procedure. Some patients who are candidates for cochlear implantation may have COM coincidentally. The patients in this group need special attention when cochlear implantation is applied.

Unlabelled: Cochlear implantation of congenitally deaf children with inner ear malformations is gaining special interest. Although the number of the reported cases is increasing, the decision for implantation needs thorough investigation. Preoperative evaluation, surgical approach and postoperative follow-up can be challenging.

Soft tissue damages after radiotherapy are an uncommon but serious complication. Late damage after radiation is the principal dose-limiting factor in radiation therapy today and is dependent on vascular pathology as a result of radiation. Pentoxifylline is a methylxanthine derivative that produces dose-related improvement in blood flow, lower blood viscosity, improved erythrocyte flexibility, and increased tissue oxygen levels.

As soon as the use of streptomycin was started for the treatment of tuberculosis, its ototoxic effect was discovered. Initial reports demonstrated that streptomycin was successful in reducing vestibular responses while preserving cochlear activity. Streptomycin sulfate has been used for almost half a century for the treatment of vertigo in patients with Meniere's disease.

Following total laryngectomy, 110 patients were orally fed on the first/second postoperative day without using a nasogastric (NG) tube. Pharyngo-cutaneous fistula was observed in 23 patients (21%) only nine of which (8%) needed surgical intervention to close the fistula. Early postoperative oral feeding of laryngectomized patients does not increase the fistula rate but decreases postoperative hospitalization time and eliminates the disadvantages of the NG tube.

The relationship between temporal bone pneumatization and the location of the lateral sinus and length of the mastoid process was investigated in 60 fresh frozen adult temporal bones, by plain X-rays, computed tomography and surgical dissection including otomicroscopic findings. Temporal bone pneumatization was classified as small, moderate and large. After drilling, the shortest distances between the middle fossa dura and mastoid tip representing the mastoid length and between the sigmoid sinus and posterior border of external auditory canal were measured and compared to the degree of pneumatization.

Bilateral recurrent nerve palsies were induced in four sheep and unilateral nerve palsy in one sheep. Vocal cord abductions were achieved by direct electrical stimulation of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscles (PCMs). By means of the diaphragmatic myogram, respiratory synchronous activation of the glottis opening musculature was shown possible.

Electromyograms (EMG) of the PCM and the diaphragm were evaluated in 6 sedated female sheep. Corresponding pneumatograms were recorded simultaneously by means of thermocontrolled respiration flowmeter. Evidence was obtained on considerable intra- and inter-individual differences in the duration of respiratory cycles as well as PCM- and diaphragmatic activity.
