Background: The objective of this study was to develop an assessment tool, ReproKnow, to evaluate the reproductive health knowledge of women with a wide range of rheumatic diseases.

Methods: The 10-item multiple-choice questionnaire was developed with feedback from a panel of content experts and female patients with rheumatic diseases. Construct validity using known-groups analysis was evaluated through comparison of median total ReproKnow scores between rheumatology fellows and nurses.

OBJECTIVE To determine which comorbid conditions are considered causally related to central-line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) and surgical-site infection (SSI) based on expert consensus. DESIGN Using the Delphi method, we administered an iterative, 2-round survey to 9 infectious disease and infection control experts from the United States. METHODS Based on our selection of components from the Charlson and Elixhauser comorbidity indices, 35 different comorbid conditions were rated from 1 (not at all related) to 5 (strongly related) by each expert separately for CLABSI and SSI, based on perceived relatedness to the outcome.

Background: Knowledge regarding factors that influence deviation of the QRS axis is important when seeking to differentiate between physiological and pathological changes. We hypothesised that, in contrast to those patients with an atrioventricular septal defect and common atrioventricular junction permitting only atrial shunting, those associated with ventricular shunting would show no relationship between the positions of the papillary muscles and the degree of the leftward deviation of the QRS axis.

Methods: We compared the positions of endocardial origin of the papillary muscles, and the frontal plane QRS axis, in patients with atrioventricular septal defects and common atrioventricular junction permitting exclusively atrial as opposed to atrial and ventricular shunting.

Endothelial function in postmenopausal women with nighttime systolic hypertension.

Menopause

August 2015

From the 1Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Emory University, Atlanta, GA; 2Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC; 3University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC; and 4College of Nursing, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL.

Objective: Hypertension becomes more prevalent in women during their postmenopausal years. Nighttime systolic blood pressure (SBP) is especially predictive of adverse cardiac events, and the relationship between rising nighttime SBP and cardiovascular risk increases more rapidly in women compared with men. The reasons for the prognostic significance of nighttime SBP are not completely known but may involve vascular endothelial dysfunction.

Purpose: To accurately assess exercise interventions and to evaluate acute and chronic cardiovascular effects in patients with early-stage cancer, consistently reliable functional outcome measures must be obtained. An incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) with gas exchange measurement to assess peak oxygen consumption (V˙O2peak) provides the gold standard outcome of cardiorespiratory fitness.

Methods: In the context of a randomized controlled trial, 40 patients with prostate cancer (mean age, 59 ± 7 yr) after radical prostatectomy performed two maximal CPET within 5.

Enzyme or gene replacement therapy with acid α-glucosidase (GAA) has achieved only partial efficacy in Pompe disease. We evaluated the effect of adjunctive clenbuterol treatment on cation-independent mannose-6-phosphate receptor (CI-MPR)-mediated uptake and intracellular trafficking of GAA during muscle-specific GAA expression with an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector in GAA-knockout (KO) mice. Clenbuterol, which increases expression of CI-MPR in muscle, was administered with the AAV vector.

Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia and endocarditis are serious infections that demand prompt clinical attention to ensure good outcomes. Of foremost importance is identifying and managing the source of infection and any associated complications. Evaluation for the presence of cardiac involvement is essential because inadequately managed S.
