Background: Evidence for managing chronic low back pain suggests beginning with non-invasive treatments and having surgery as a last resort. Currently, no studies examine treatment engagement for back pain in the six-months preceding elective spine surgery assessment.

Objectives: This study aims to: 1) determine the engagement in non-pharmacological, non-operative treatment before elective thoracolumbar spine surgery (ETSS) assessment in XXXXXXXX; and 2) investigate potential factors associated with engagement in this population.

An animal model of gestational obesity and prediabetes: HISS-dependent insulin resistance induced by a high-sucrose diet in Sprague Dawley rats.

Can J Physiol Pharmacol

June 2021

Max Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, 260 Brodie Centre, 727 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 3P5, Canada.

This study developed an animal model of gestational obesity and prediabetes in Sprague Dawley rats using 35% sucrose supplementation (SS). Postprandially, insulin stimulates glucose uptake and nutrient partitioning via insulin-dependent action as well as hepatic insulin sensitizing substance (HISS) - dependent action. HISS is glycogenic in heart, kidney, and skeletal muscle (contrasting insulin's lipogenic actions in liver and adipose tissue) and is responsible for the vasodilatory action of insulin.

Critically ill benign EEG variants: Is there such a thing?

Clin Neurophysiol

June 2020

University of Manitoba, Max Rady College of Medicine, Section of Neurology, Department of Internal Medicine, GF-543, 820 Sherbrook Street, Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, MB R3A 1A9, Canada. Electronic address:

Despite growing use of critical care electroencephalography (ccEEG) to detect seizures and status epilepticus in the intensive care unit (ICU), integrating ccEEG findings with traditionally described benign EEG variants (BEVs) is a relatively new concept. BEV-like waveforms are now increasingly encountered in the ICU, and have also been explicitly included in proposed definitions of brief potentially ictal rhythmic discharges (BIRDs) in the ICU, bringing to the fore the question of if and which EEG patterns in critically ill patients can be safely deemed "benign". Though well-characterized as benign in healthy outpatients at low pre-test risk for neurologic disease, the significance of BEVs in the ICU remains largely unknown.

Background: Epigenetic (including DNA and histone) modifications occur in a variety of neurological disorders. If epigenetic features of brain autopsy material are to be studied, it is critical to understand the post-mortem stability of the modifications.

Methods: Pig and mouse brain tissue were formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded, or frozen after post-mortem delays of 0, 24, 48, and 72 h.

July 2017

Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, 260 Brodie Centre, 727 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, Canada R3E 3P5. Electronic address:

This paper presents research findings that advance knowledge around the power and agency families with children with complex care needs (CCN). Our conceptual framework uses concepts from geography towards situating the experiences and social realities of family carers within the 'embodied space of care'. The data originate from a longitudinal qualitative study of Canadian families with children with CCN.
