Background: Hypotension with endotracheal intubation (ETI) is common and associated with adverse outcomes. We sought to evaluate whether a previously described hypotension prediction score (HYPS) for ETI is associated with worse patient outcomes and/or clinical conditions.
Methods: This study is a post hoc analysis of a prospective observational multicenter study involving adult (age ≥18 years) intensive care unit (ICU) patients undergoing ETI in which the HYPS was derived and validated on the entire cohort and a stable subset (ie, patients in stable condition).

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a challenging autoimmune and multi-system condition. With advances in cardiovascular screening and therapies for SLE patients, we evaluated the cardiovascular characteristics, multi-modality imaging, and outcomes of SLE at our tertiary referral center over an 8 year period. Consecutive patients from our SLE registry from April 2012 to March 2020 were retrospectively analyzed.

In order to regenerate myocardial tissues with functional characteristics, we need to copy some properties of the myocardium, such as its extracellular matrix and electrical conductivity. In this study, we synthesized nanosheets of Molybdenum disulfide (MoS), and integrated them into polycaprolactone (PCL) and electrospun on the surface of decellularized human amniotic membrane (DHAM) with the purpose of improving the scaffolds mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. For studies, we seeded the mouse embryonic cardiac cells, mouse Embryonic Cardiac Cells (mECCs), on the scaffolds and then studied the MoS nanocomposites by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Introduction: The prototype DNA hypomethylating agents 5-azacytidine (5AC) and decitabine (DAC) are currently FDA-approved for treatment of blood and bone marrow disorders like myelodysplastic syndrome. 5AC and DAC are considered similar drugs and were shown to induce histone modifications that modulate gene expression. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of both drugs on histone acetylation and methylation at multiple histone amino acids residues.

Coexisting morbidities (CM) are common in patients with heart failure (HF). This study evaluated the CM burden and its clinical significance in elderly hospitalized patients with new-onset (De-novo) HF (n = 84) and acutely decompensated chronic HF (ADCHF) (n = 122). All had HF symptoms associated with: (a) LVEF <50%, or, (b) left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≥50% and NT-proBNP ≥300 pg/mL.

Background: Molecular subtype in invasive breast cancer guides systemic therapy. It is unknown whether molecular subtype should also be considered to tailor surgical therapy. The present investigation was designed to evaluate whether breast cancer subtype impacted surgical margins in patients with invasive breast cancer stage I through III undergoing breast-conserving therapy.

We report the unique case of a 2-year-old male with severe heart failure requiring mechanical circulatory support with a left ventricular assist device, who developed adenovirus pneumonitis infection requiring veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. He progressed to acute respiratory failure and refractory hypoxemia despite intubation with maximum respiratory support. The patient was placed on ECMO with improvement in lung function over four days with subsequent successful decannulation.

Compared to the parental SARS-CoV-2 virus, infections by the now dominant Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 appear to be more common and more severe in pregnant women. The need for a robust, cheap, and quick method for diagnosing placental infection by SARS-CoV-2 has thus become more acute. Here, we describe a highly sensitive and specific immunohistochemical assay for SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein for routine use in placental pathology practice.

Background: The Cardiac Surgery Score (CASUS) was developed to assist in predicting post-cardiac surgery mortality using parameters measured in the intensive care unit. It is calculated by assigning points to ten physiologic variables and adding them to obtain a score (additive CASUS), or by logistic regression to weight the variables and estimate the probability of mortality (logistic CASUS). Both additive and logistic CASUS have been externally validated elsewhere, but not yet in the United States of America (USA).

The study objective was to determine empirically based timing recommendations for safe air travel following lung nodulectomy. All patients who underwent pulmonary nonanatomic resection followed by air travel home immediately after discharge were identified at 2 institutions between 2014 and 2018. These patients were surveyed via telephone regarding any complications they may have experienced during their travel home and within the first week after discharge.

Objectives: The increase in endovascular aortic aneurysm repair has led to increasing incidence of aortic endograft infections. Additionally, more atypical organisms are being identified as pathogens. We report on a rare aortic endograft infection to further characterize and understand these infections.

Optimal management of critical aortic stenosis (AS) in infants depends on the left ventricle's (LV's) ability to maintain adequate output. Determining feasibility of biventricular repair may be difficult, particularly in those with mitral disease, endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE), multi-level obstruction, and uncertain physiologic capacity. We report a case of a three-month-old with critical AS, severely reduced LV function, EFE, and moderate mitral regurgitation (MR), who underwent a Ross-Konno procedure with concomitant EFE resection and mitral valve repair.

We have previously shown that two anti-cancer drugs, CX-4945 and MS-275, protect and preserve white matter (WM) architecture and improve functional recovery in a model of WM ischemic injury. While both compounds promote recovery, CX-4945 is a selective Casein kinase 2 (CK2) inhibitor and MS-275 is a selective Class I histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor. Alterations in microRNAs (miRNAs) mediate some of the protective actions of these drugs.

Focused ultrasound combined with circulating microbubbles (FUS+MB) can transiently enhance blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability at targeted brain locations. Its great promise in improving drug delivery to the brain is reflected by a rapidly growing number of clinical trials using FUS+MB to treat various brain diseases. As the clinical applications of FUS+MB continue to expand, it is critical to have a better understanding of the molecular and cellular effects induced by FUS+MB to enhance the efficacy of current treatment and enable the discovery of new therapeutic strategies.

Here we report a case of renal oncocytoma in a 68 year-old male. The diagnosis was initially made on a needle biopsy 6 years prior to the partial nephrectomy. The case is unique that in addition to the gross and microscopic features commonly seen in renal oncocytomas, both lymphovascular invasion and prominent intracytoplasmic vacuole-like spaces are also present in this tumor.

Determining the extent to which a patient is benefiting from cancer therapy is challenging. Criteria for quantifying the extent of "tumor response" observed within a few cycles of treatment have been established for various types of solids as well as hematologic malignancies. These measures comprise the primary endpoints of phase II trials.

The category of papillary breast tumors includes a limited number of entities. Nonetheless, this relatively uncommon group of tumors seems to instigate a disproportionate degree of diagnostic disquiet. As a group, papillary breast tumors suffer from a relatively high rate of discordant interpretation.

A previous retrospective study documented restored patency to 48.2% of occluded enteral feeding tubes using alkalinized Creon pancreatic enzyme capsules. In light of the low efficacy rate, the institutional enteral feeding tube clearance protocol was subsequently revised to incorporate a newly marketed non-enteric-coated Viokace pancreatic enzyme tablet, despite the lack of published data for this indication.

A focus of cancer epidemiologic research has become the identification of risk factors that influence specific subtypes of disease, a phenomenon known as etiologic heterogeneity. In previous work we developed a novel strategy to cluster tumor markers and identify disease subtypes that differ maximally with respect to known risk factors for use in the context of case-control studies. The method relies on the premise that unsupervised -means clustering will find candidate solutions that are closely aligned with the sought-after etiologically distinct clusters, which may not be true in the presence of clusters of tumor markers that are not related to risk of disease.
