Background: Previous studies have shown that pregnant women have higher salivary cortisol levels when the fetus is female. These findings suggest a basis for the sex differences observed in many offspring outcomes after exposure to in utero stress, but it is not known if fetal adrenal glucocorticoid synthesis differs by sex.

A dianionic tetrapodal pentadentate diborate ligand is introduced. This ligand forms a high spin neutral iron(ii) complex that reacts with a variety of organoazides to yield transient Fe(iii) imido radicals that are extremely potent hydrogen atom abstractors. The nature of these species is supported by full characterization of the Fe(iii) amido products, kinetic studies, density functional computations and Mössbauer spectroscopy on the -CH-- Bu substituted derivative.

Background: Family caregivers (FCs) to cancer patients are at increased risk for physical and emotional health problems as a result of being in the caregiver role. Current research on interventions for FCs has focused on psychological support or educational interventions, with very little investigation of exercise in maintaining or improving health. Based on our preliminary survey, participation in regular exercise to improve health was noted as a priority for FCs.

Diaryl selenides containing o-hydroxymethylene substituents function as peroxide-destroying mimetics of the antioxidant selenoenzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx), via oxidation to the corresponding spirodioxyselenuranes with hydrogen peroxide and subsequent reduction back to the original selenides with glutathione. Parent selenides with 3-hydroxypropyl or 2,3-dihydroxypropyl groups produced the novel compounds 10 and 11, respectively, with greatly improved aqueous solubility and catalytic activity. The phenolic derivative 28 displayed similarly ameliorated properties and also modest radical-inhibiting antioxidant activity, as evidenced by an assay based on phenolic hydrogen atom transfer to the stable free radical DPPH.

Lotka systems with directed dispersal dynamics: Competition and influence of diffusion strategies.

We study a Lotka system describing two competing populations, and each of them chooses its diffusion strategy as the tendency to have a distribution proportional to a certain positive prescribed function. Hypothalamic peptide neurohormones such as gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRHs) and gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) play pivotal roles in the control of reproduction and gonadal maturation in teleost fish. To study the effects of GnIH on fish reproduction, we investigated the influence of seabream GnRH (sbGnRH) and GnIH (both alone and in combination) on levels of reproductive genes (GnIH, GnIH-receptor [GnIH-R], melatonin receptor [MT3], sbGnRH, and gonadotropic hormones [GTHs]) during different stages of gonadal maturation in male, female, and immature cinnamon clownfish, Amphiprion melanopus. The results showed that the expression levels of GnIH, GnIH-R, and MT3 genes increased after the GnIH injection, but decreased after the sbGnRH injection.

Background: Statins are a class of medications that are particularly effective for lowering cholesterol and reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Despite a range of benefits, non-adherence to statin medication is prevalent with 50% to 75% of patients failing to adhere to treatment within the first 2-years. A previous review on interventions to improve adherence to cholesterol lowering medication concluded that rigorous trials were needed with emphasis on the patient's perspective and shared decision making.

The present study aimed to determine the relationship between melatonin and gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) and their effect on reproduction in cinnamon clownfish, Amphiprion melanopus. Accordingly, we investigated the expression pattern of GnIH, GnIH receptor (GnIH-R), and melatonin receptor (MT-R1) mRNA and protein, as well as the plasma levels of melatonin, during sex change in cinnamon clownfish. We found that GnIH and MT-R1 mRNA and melatonin activity were higher in fish with mature brain than in fish with developing gonads, and using double immunofluorescence staining, we found that both GnIH and MT-R1 proteins were co-expressed in the hypothalamus of cinnamon clownfish.

Five organic π-conjugated small molecules with bithiophene-phthalimide backbones bearing alkyl chains of different symmetry, length and branching character were synthesized using optimized microwave and direct heteroarylation protocols. The chosen alkyl chains were 1-ethylpropyl, 1-methylbutyl, pentyl, hexyl and octyl. A sixth compound was also synthesized replacing the phthalimide terminal units with octylnaphthalimide for additional scope.

Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC), the major channel of the mitochondrial outer membrane provides a controlled pathway for respiratory metabolites in and out of the mitochondria. In spite of the wealth of experimental data from structural, biochemical, and biophysical investigations, the exact mechanisms governing selective ion and metabolite transport, especially the role of titratable charged residues and interactions with soluble cytosolic proteins, remain hotly debated in the field. The computational advances hold a promise to provide a much sought-after solution to many of the scientific disputes around solute and ion transport through VDAC and hence, across the mitochondrial outer membrane.

The effect of the nanosize on surface properties of NiO nanoparticles for the adsorption of Quinolin-65.

Using Quinolin-65 (Q-65) as a model-adsorbing compound for polar heavy hydrocarbons, the nanosize effect of NiO nanoparticles on the adsorption of Q-65 was investigated. Different-sized NiO nanoparticles with sizes between 5 and 80 nm were prepared by the controlled thermal dehydroxylation of Ni(OH)2. The properties of the nanoparticles were characterized using XRD, BET, FTIR, HRTEM and TGA.

Iridium complexes of the PC P ligand in which the donors are linked by 2,3-benzo[]thiophene groups engage in the cooperative activation of NO and the resulting iridaepoxides can be treated with dihydrogen to effect elimination of water and regeneration of the starting iridium complex. The mechanism of the steps in this reaction have been investigated using low temperature NMR investigations that reveal H/D exchange processes that point to a highly reactive kinetic product of hydrogen addition to the iridaepoxide. This intermediate is also involved in the water elimination pathway, and model compounds have been synthesized to provide further evidence for the mechanistic proposals for water elimination.

We describe a simple, rapid methodology for the synthesis of water-stable iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) compatible with a variety of aqueous buffers, based on mechanochemical milling exchange of covalently bound surface ligands on pre-fabricated oleic acid-protected IONPs. Application of milling for IONP ligand exchange eliminates steps required for transforming hydrophobic into negatively charged, water-soluble superparamagnetic IONPs.

Silicon-hydrogen bonds are shown to add to a nickel carbon double bond to yield nickel α-silylalkyl hydrido complexes. Kinetic and isotope labeling studies suggest that a concerted 4-centred addition across the Ni=C bond is operative rather than a mechanism involving Si-H oxidative addition. This constitutes an example of Si-H bond activation via ligand cooperativity.

The main aim of this paper is to develop a low-cost GNSS/MEMS-IMU tightly-coupled integration system with aiding information that can provide reliable position solutions when the GNSS signal is challenged such that less than four satellites are visible in a harsh environment. To achieve this goal, we introduce an adaptive tightly-coupled integration system with height and heading aiding (ATCA). This approach adopts a novel redundant measurement noise estimation method for an adaptive Kalman filter application and also augments external measurements in the filter to aid the position solutions, as well as uses different filters to deal with various situations.

Effects of Nitrogen Doping on X-band Dielectric Properties of Carbon Nanotube/Polymer Nanocomposites.

Nitrogen-doped and undoped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized by selective passing of source and carrier gases (ethane, ammonia, hydrogen, and argon) over an alumina-supported iron catalyst in a quartz tubular reactor at 650 °C. Synthesized CNTs were mixed with polyvinylidene fluoride with an Alberta polymer asymmetric minimixer (APAM) mixer at 240 °C and 235 rpm, and the resulting nanocomposites were compression molded. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques revealed that introducing nitrogen into the crystalline structure of CNTs resulted in higher crystalline defects.
