Decoding the Cauzin Softstrip: a case study in extracting information from old media.

Having content in an archive is of limited value if it cannot be read and used. As a case study of extricating information from obsolete media, making it readable once again through deep learning techniques, we examine the Cauzin Softstrip: one of the first two-dimensional bar codes, released in 1985 by Cauzin Systems, which could be used for encoding all manner of digital data. Softstrips occupy a curious middle ground, as they were both physical and digital.

Label-Free Isolation of Exosomes Using Microfluidic Technologies.

Exosomes are cell-derived structures packaged with lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. They exist in diverse bodily fluids and are involved in physiological and pathological processes. Although their potential for clinical application as diagnostic and therapeutic tools has been revealed, a huge bottleneck impeding the development of applications in the rapidly burgeoning field of exosome research is an inability to efficiently isolate pure exosomes from other unwanted components present in bodily fluids.

Self-Consistent Auxiliary Density Perturbation Theory.

The working equations for the extension of auxiliary density perturbation theory (ADPT) to hybrid functionals, employing the variational fitting of the Fock potential, are derived. The response equations in the resulting self-consistent ADPT (SC-ADPT) are solved iteratively with an adapted Eirola-Nevanlinna algorithm. As a result, a memory and CPU time efficient implementation of perturbation theory free of four-center electron repulsion integrals (ERIs) is obtained.

In this work, we report the formation of perylene diimide films, from green solvents, for use as electron transporting layers, when combined with ZnO, in inverted-type organic photovoltaics. A modified N-annulated PDI was functionalized with a -butyloxycarbonyl protecting group to solubilize the material, enabling solution processing from green solvents. Post-deposition treatment of films thermal annealing cleaves the protecting group yielding the known PDIN-H material, rendering films solvent-resistant.

We report the design, synthesis, and characterization of four N-annulated perylene diimide (NPDI) functionalized rhenium bipyridine [Re(bpy)] supramolecular dyads. The Re(bpy) scaffold was connected to the NPDI chromophore either directly [] or via an ethyl [], butyl [], or hexyl [] alkyl-chain spacer. Upon electrochemical reduction in the presence of CO and a proton source, all exhibited significant current enhancement effects, while did not.

A monoanionic pentadentate ligand platform for scandium-pnictogen multiple bonds.

A new monoanionic pentadentate ligand is designed to accommodate Sc = E bonds (E = N, P). The imido complex is stable enough to isolate and characterize, and reacts rapidly with CO. The phosphinidene, on the other hand, is highly reactive and induces C-C bond cleavage to yield a phosphido-pyridyl complex which also undergoes rapid reacton with CO.

The study of the dynamics of atom-diatom reactions involving two rare gas (Rg) atoms and protons is of crucial importance given the astrophysical relevance of these processes. In a series of previous studies, we have been investigating a number of such Rg(1)+ Rg(2)H+→ Rg(2)+ Rg(1)H+ reactions by means of different numerical approaches. Developing structure-aggregation relationships of cyanine dyes is crucial for controlling their optical properties for various uses. This study develops a synthetic route and the structure-dependent self-assembly of a family of benzimidacarbocyanine dyes for J- or H-aggregation properties. It was found that both the presence and placement of halogen atoms play a defining role in the resulting supramolecular interactions of these compounds.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) of a woman can lead to dysregulated hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis during pregnancy, which can in turn adversely affect her offspring HPA axis function. Choline and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are dietary factors with the potential to favorably modify the stress response system. The current study aimed to investigate whether maternal choline intake and DHA status moderate the effects of maternal ACEs exposure on maternal and infant HPA axes function.

Microfluidic devices have been used progressively in biomedical research due to the advantages they offer, such as relatively low-cost, rapid and precise processing, and an ability to support highly automated analyses. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) are both biocompatible materials widely used in microfluidics due to their desirable characteristics. It is recognized that combining these two particular materials in a single microfluidic device would enable the development of an increasingly in-demand array of new applications, including those requiring high flow rates and elevated pressures.

An N-annulated perylene diimide dimer, tPDIN-hex, a graphene model compound with atomic precision, was investigated for luminescence applications. We stabilize a prescribed cycle or an equilibrium of a difference equation using pulsed stochastic control. Our technique, inspired by Kolmogorov's law of large numbers, activates a stabilizing effect of stochastic perturbation and allows for stabilization using a much wider range for the control parameter than would be possible in the absence of noise. Our main general result applies to both prediction-based and target-oriented controls.

E-cigarette use (vaping) during pregnancy has been increasing, and the potential exists for the developing brain to be exposed to chemical constituents in the vape. Vapes come in over 7000 unique flavours with and without nicotine, and while nicotine is a known neurotoxicant, the effects of vape flavouring alone, in the absence of nicotine, on brain function are not well understood. Here, we performed a screen of vape aerosol extracts (VAEs) to determine the potential for prenatal neurotoxicity using the zebrafish embryo photomotor response (PMR)-a translational biosensor of neurobehavioural effects.

Slot-Die-Coated Ternary Organic Photovoltaics for Indoor Light Recycling.

Efficient organic photovoltaics (OPVs) based on slot-die-coated (SD) ternary blends were developed for low-intensity indoor light harvesting. For active layers processed in air and from eco-friendly solvents, our device performances (under 1 sun and low light intensity) are the highest reported values for fluoro-dithiophenyl-benzothiadiazole donor polymer-based OPVs. The N-annulated perylene diimide dimer acceptor was incorporated into a blend of donor polymer (FBT) and fullerene acceptor (PCBM) to give ternary bulk heterojunction blends.

PR10/Bet v1-like Proteins as Novel Contributors to Plant Biochemical Diversity.

Pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins constitute a broad class of plant proteins with analogues found throughout nature from bacteria to higher eukaryotes. PR proteins were first noted in plants as part of the hypersensitive response, but have since been assigned an array of biological roles. The PR10/Bet v1-like proteins are a subset of PR proteins characterized by an ability to bind a wide range of lipophilic ligands, uniquely positioning them as contributors to specialized biosynthetic pathways.

Hypothesis: Mechanistic understanding of particle-flocculant interactions and its link to the resulting floc structure is essential for developing tailings treatments with enhanced consolidation rates. A noninvasive, in-situ visualization of the floc formation and the consequent sediment microstructure via tri-dimensional laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) can enable establishing the quantitative link between the flocculation conditions and bulk properties of the resulting sediment structures.

Experiments: A dual fluorescence/reflectance confocal imaging protocol is developed to non-invasively detect morphological changes in dense oil sands tailings during flocculation with an anionic polymer and the subsequent sediment compaction stages for three different polymer dosages.

Usually considered as a byproduct, the 1,6-dibrominated PDI has rarely been functionalized for the preparation of electro-active conjugated molecules, particularly in the field of organic photovoltaics. In light of the literature, one can ask oneself: Does a 1,7-isomer based functional molecule systematically perform better than its 1,6-analogue? To answer this question, we report herein the synthesis and direct comparison of two indeno[1,2-b]thiophene (IDT) end-capped perylene diimide regioisomers (PDI) (1,6 and 1,7) used as non-fullerene acceptors in organic solar cells. It turned out that in our case, ie, when blended with the well-known PTB7-Th donor polymer, higher performance was reached for devices made with the 1,6-analogue.
