Caffeic acid is a polyphenol of critical importance in plants, involved in a variety of physiological processes including lignin formation, cellular growth, stress response, and external signaling. This small molecule also acts as a powerful antioxidant and thus has therapeutic potential for a variety of health conditions. Traditional methods of detecting caffeic acid lack appropriate temporal resolution to monitor real time concentration changes on a subsecond time scale with nM detection limits.

The current review summarizes select systematic reviews and meta-analyses on evidence-based behavioral health interventions in pediatric diabetes.

The Molecular Education and Research Consortium in Undergraduate Computational Chemistry (MERCURY) has supported a diverse group of faculty and students for over 20 years by providing computational resources as well as networking opportunities and professional support. The consortium comprises 38 faculty (42% women) at 34 different institutions, who have trained nearly 900 undergraduate students, more than two-thirds of whom identify as women and one-quarter identify as students of color. MERCURY provides a model for the support necessary for faculty to achieve professional advancement and career satisfaction.

Spironolactone, a potassium-sparing diuretic and aldosterone antagonist, is a mineralocorticoid hormone commonly prescribed to patients suffering from heart failure, hirsutism, dermatological afflictions, and hypertension. Interestingly, relatively little work has been done on the development of vertebrate embryos after exposure to this compound. Here, we treat zebrafish embryos with spironolactone at 10 M, 10 M, or 10 M, and observe them after three to seven days of exposure.

The Primarily Undergraduate Nanomaterials Cooperative (PUNC) is an organization for research-active faculty studying nanomaterials at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs), where undergraduate teaching and research go hand-in-hand. In this perspective, we outline the differences in maintaining an active research group at a PUI compared to an R1 institution. We also discuss the work of PUNC, which focuses on community building, instrument sharing, and facilitating new collaborations.

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are known to have difficulty with peer relations, though the mechanisms by which these children struggle with interpersonal relationships are not well known. The current study examined the relation between working memory (WM) and the encoding of nonverbal social cues using a dual-task paradigm tested in children with High and Low ADHD symptoms. A total of 40 children were recruited (20 High ADHD; 20 Low ADHD) and completed computerized tasks of social encoding and WM in both single- and dual-task conditions.

Women's asset ownership and children's nutritional status: Evidence from Papua New Guinea.

This study examines how women's asset ownership is associated with children's nutritional status in Papua New Guinea, a country with some of the most severe child malnutrition in the world. The 2009-2010 Household Income and Expenditure Survey is employed, but restricted to children under the age of 72 months living with married mothers, leaving a final analytic sample of 1651. Asset ownership is expected to strengthen mothers' income-generating capacity and their bargaining power within the home, which increases investments in children's health.

Synthesis and characterization of AgGaS nanoparticles: a study of growth and fluorescence.

Silver gallium sulfide nanocrystals were synthesized and characterized by fluorescence, TEM, EDS, and XRD to better understand the material system with an ideal band gap of 2.7 eV. The crystals were found to nucleate in the monoclinic structure, and develop two fluorescence peaks (650, 460 nm) influenced by stoichiometry.

5-Formyltetrahydrofolate is a compound that is administered as a rescue agent in methotrexate chemotherapy and in 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy for synergistic effects. It has also recently been suggested to play a role in bacterial resistance to antifolate therapy. 5,10-methenyltetrahydrofolate synthetase (MTHFS) is the only enzyme known to catalyze the conversion of this compound to 5,10-methenyltetrahydrofolate along with the hydrolysis of ATP to ADP.

Plant cell shape is determined by the orientation of cellulose microfibrils in the primary cell wall. Consequently, mutations that affect genes encoding the enzymes responsible for the synthesis of cellulose, namely, the cellulose synthase catalytic subunits, can alter cell shape substantially, particularly in the roots of affected plants. The multiple response expansion1 (mre1) mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana results from a point mutation in the AtCESA3 gene, which encodes one of the three isoforms of the cellulose synthase catalytic subunit required for synthesis of cellulose in the primary cell wall.
