Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services, Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health, United States Department of Agriculture, 2150 Centre Avenue, Building MS 2E7, Fort Collins, CO 80521, USA.

Nosocomial infections are a serious threat to optimum patient care. In addition, nosocomial infections can have far-reaching consequences for the hospital personnel and the financial aspects of the hospital. Nosocomial infections with Salmonella spp have been described among hospitalized equine populations more frequently than any other agent.

Comparison of three fecal steroid metabolites for pregnancy detection used with single sampling in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis).

United States Geological Survey-Biological Resources Discipline, Fort Collins Science Center, 2150 Centre Avenue, Building C, Fort Collins, Colorado 80526-8118, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared three fecal steroid metabolite assays to detect pregnancy in Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, analyzing samples from both free-ranging and captive ewes.
  • Results indicated that certain metabolite levels (iPdG) were reliable indicators of lambing in free-ranging ewes, while samples collected early in the year were less definitive.
  • The findings suggest that fecal steroid analysis, particularly of PdG and iPdG, is a promising noninvasive method for assessing pregnancy and reproductive health in bighorn sheep, dismissing the usefulness of estrone conjugates.

USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services, Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health, 2150 Centre Avenue, Building B, Mailstop 2E7, Fort Collins, CO 80526-8117, USA.

A national sample of cow-calf producers was contacted to participate in a study to describe selected calving management practices on operations throughout the United States. Information was gathered on calving season, frequency of dystocia, frequency of observation, timing of assistance, and calving facilities. Regional and herd size differences existed in all parameters evaluated.

Climatic factors and the occurrence of vesicular stomatitis in New Mexico, United States of America.

Rev Sci Tech

December 2003

Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health, 2150 Centre Avenue, Building B, Fort Collins, Colorado 80526, United States of America.

Vesicular stomatitis (VS) outbreaks occurred in the southwestern United States of America in 1995, 1997 and 1998. The epidemiology of VS is not understood completely and some of the epidemiologic aspects of this disease are currently under investigation. In this study, daily maximum temperature, daily minimum temperature, daily mean temperature, daily mean relative humidity and daily total precipitation were collected at the Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research site in central New Mexico.

December 2003

USDA, Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health, 2150 Centre Avenue, Building B, Mail Stop 2E5, Fort Collins, CO 80526-8117, USA.

Bovine-leukosis virus (BLV; also termed 'bovine-leukemia virus') is a retrovirus that primarily affects lymphoid tissue of dairy and beef cattle. Our objective was to investigate the association between BLV infection and annual value of production (AVP) on dairy herds within the United States, as part of the USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System's 1996 dairy study. 1006 herds (in 20 states) with at least 30 dairy cows were interviewed during 1996.

U.S. Geological Survey, Fort Collins Science Center, 2150 Centre Avenue, Building C, Fort Collins, CO 80526, USA.

We evaluated the potential use of stable isotopes to establish linkages between the wintering grounds and the breeding grounds of the Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos), the White-rumped Sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis), the Baird's Sandpiper (Calidris bairdii), and other Neotropical migratory shorebird species (e.g., Tringa spp.

Prevalence was estimated for Salmonella enterica serotype eneritidis (SE) in layer house environments (n = 200 layer houses) and house mice (n = 129 layer houses) in 15 states throughout the United States. Environmental swabs were collected from manure, egg belts, elevators, and walkways. Live-catch rodent traps were placed for 4-7 days.

May 2003

Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health, 2150 Centre Avenue, Building B, Mail Stop 2E7, Fort Collins, CO 80526-8117, USA.

The occurrence of vesicular stomatitis (VS) was investigated in El Salvador through monthly visits to 12 sentinel cattle operations located in four different departments. Management, environmental, and spatial data were collected. Heifers were enrolled on the operations and were examined and bled monthly for 3 years.
