Whether DNA methylation changes follow human physical trauma is uncertain. We aimed to investigate if severe trauma was associated with DNA methylation changes. In a prospective, observational, clinical study, we included severely injured adults and adults undergoing elective surgery (controls).

Although numerous studies support a dose-effect relationship between Endocrine disruptors (EDs) and the progression and malignancy of tumors, the impact of a chronic exposure to non-lethal concentrations of EDs in cancer remains unknown. More specifically, a number of studies have reported the impact of Aldrin on a variety of cancer types, including prostate cancer. In previous studies, we demonstrated the induction of the malignant phenotype in DU145 prostate cancer (PCa) cells after a chronic exposure to Aldrin (an ED).

Context: Falling insulin requirements often lead to considerations of whether a pregnancy can continue safely or if delivery is indicated.
Objective: To evaluate prevalence and predictors of falling insulin requirements in pregnant women with preexisting diabetes delivering preterm and to explore the relationship to fetal asphyxia and neonatal morbidity.
Methods: A prospective cohort study of 101 consecutive singleton pregnant women with preexisting diabetes delivering preterm < 37 weeks (68 type 1 and 33 type 2 diabetes) where the prevalence of falling insulin requirements (≥20%) before delivery was recorded.

A previously healthy male was rushed into a hospital critically ill with confusion, sepsis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome only 43 h after having a normal chest X-ray and with blood samples showing only minimally elevated C-reactive protein. Two days earlier, the patient had returned to his home country, the Faroe Islands, from a 10-day work trip aboard a Scandinavian ship in Colombia. The diagnosis turned out to be an influenza B infection and necrotizing pneumonia with Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing methicillin-sensitive (MSSA).

Mucormycosis has recently been recognized as a severe complication of COVID-19 with high fatality rates. We report a fatal case of COVID-19 associated mucormycosis (CAM) in a non-diabetic immunocompromised patient, who was first misdiagnosed and treated for COVID-19 associated aspergillosis (CAPA). The risk factors and initial clinical presentation of CAPA and CAM are similar, but CAM has a more aggressive course and CAPA and CAM are treated differently.

Incidences of pancreatic cancer and acute and chronic pancreatitis are rising globally, and often no curative treatment is available at the time of diagnosis. We tested the hypothesis that low and high plasma concentrations of pancreatic amylase are associated with increased risk of pancreatic cancer, acute pancreatitis, and chronic pancreatitis in the general population. We included 101,765 individuals (55% women) aged 20-100 years from the Copenhagen General Population Study with baseline measurements of plasma pancreatic amylase.

A homemade low-cost bubble continuous positive airway pressure (bCPAP) setup can be created using resources available at most secondary healthcare facilities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This setup has the potential of saving millions of children's lives worldwide; however, treatment failure due to bCPAP setup insufficiencies and lack of educated staff remains a significant obstacle. Here, we report a first-hand experience on the use of an established low-cost bCPAP setup to be used in LMICs and how optimization of two parameters was critical to effectively treat a severe case of lower respiratory disease in a 6-month-old infant in Tanzania.

Background: CD4 cell recovery following first-line combination ART (cART) is poorer in HIV-2+ than in HIV-1+ patients. Only large comparisons may allow adjustments for demographic and pretreatment plasma viral load (pVL).
Methods: ART-naive HIV+ adults from two European multicohort collaborations, COHERE (HIV-1 alone) and ACHIeV2e (HIV-2 alone), were included, if they started first-line cART (without NNRTIs or fusion inhibitors) between 1997 and 2011.

Emotion dysregulation is a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD) that persists into periods of remission. Neuroimaging studies show aberrant neural responses during emotion regulation (ER) in patients with BD relative to healthy controls, but behavioural evidence for ER deficits is sparse and conflicting. This study aimed to explore ER in BD using a novel, personally relevant experimental paradigm.

Background: Studies comparing acceleromyography and mechanomyography indicate that the two methods cannot be used interchangeably. However, it is uncertain to what extent differences in precision between the methods and the naturally occurring arm-to-arm variation have influenced the results of these studies. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine the precision and the arm-to-arm variation, when the same method is used on both of the arms.
