Treatment of bipolar depression: clinical practice vs. adherence to guidelines-data from a Bavarian drug surveillance project.

Front Psychiatry

July 2024

Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, kbo-Lech-Mangfall-Klinik Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Objectives: Pharmacotherapy of bipolar depression (BPD) is confronted with major clinical challenges, like limited evidence-based treatment options, regular cases of treatment resistance, and risk of treatment-emergent affective switches. Medical guidelines can support practitioners to make decisions based on current scientific evidence. The objective of this study is to evaluate to what extent recommendations of the 2019 German S3 guidelines "Diagnosis and Treatment of Bipolar Disorders" are reflected in clinical practice in inpatient treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Spouses can significantly influence each other's feelings about aging, particularly in the context of dementia caregiving, which was examined through a study involving 1,001 couples.
  • The study found a measurable connection between the felt ages of both caregivers and their spouses with dementia, where a positive caregiving relationship led to more aligned felt ages.
  • Additionally, caregivers' felt age was linked to their overall well-being and life satisfaction, suggesting that emotional dynamics in caregiving families affect perceptions of aging.

Article Synopsis
  • Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) thrive in the moist soils of southern Thailand, which complicates control efforts, particularly during rainy seasons and in the face of droughts caused by El Niño from 2014-2016.
  • A longitudinal study from 2012 to 2016 involved treating infected participants with albendazole and assessing the impact of seasonal droughts on STH prevalence without additional treatments.
  • Although STH prevalence was high despite dry season control efforts, a significant decline in trichuriasis was noted post-drought in 2016, while strongyloidiasis prevalence remained unchanged.

Prevention and control of Ebola virus transmission: mathematical modelling and data fitting.

J Math Biol

July 2024

Complex Systems Research Center, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, 030006, Shanxi, China.

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) has been endemic since 1976, and the case fatality rate is extremely high. EVD is spread by infected animals, symptomatic individuals, dead bodies, and contaminated environment. In this paper, we formulate an EVD model with four transmission modes and a time delay describing the incubation period.

Aim: Traffic accidents are caused by several interacting risk factors. This study aimed to investigate the interactions among risk factors associated with death at the accident scene (DATAS) as an indicator of the crash severity, for pedestrians, passengers, and drivers by adopting "Logic Regression" as a novel approach in the traffic field.

Method: A case-control study was designed based on the police data from the Road Traffic Injury Registry in northwest of Iran during 2014-2016.

Introduction: Many papers reporting on QI projects are not publishable for a variety of reasons. We compared manuscripts submitted as QI reports between June 2014 and June 2016 (prior to publication of the revised Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence (SQUIRE 2.0) with papers submitted to the American Journal of Nursing between July 2016 and December 2022).

Marine heatwaves alter the nursery function of coastal habitats for juvenile Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod.

Sci Rep

June 2024

Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences, Oregon State University, Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station, Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Dr., Newport, OR, 97365, USA.

Marine Heatwaves (MHWs) can directly influence survival of marine fishes, particularly for early life stages, including age-0 juveniles during their residence in coastal nursery habitats. However, the ability of nurseries to support high fish densities, optimize foraging and growth, and protect against predators may be altered during MHWs. Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) larval, juvenile, and adult abundances declined dramatically following MHW events in 2014-2016 and 2019.

Introduction: Young sexual minority men (SMM) bear the greatest burden of anal human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. We assessed anal HPV genotype discordance between the Linear Array (LA) and SPF10 PCR-DEIA-LiPA25 (LiPA25).

Methods: Discordance was assessed between LA and LiPA25 using self-collected anal swabs from 120 SMM aged 18-29 who were recruited in 2014-2016.

Objective: The issue of low consumption among rural households in China has a longstanding history, and the experience of infectious diseases may exacerbate the existing challenges in fostering consumption growth. However, studies that characterize the impact of infectious diseases on household consumption are limited in China. This study aims to explore rural household consumption responses to infectious diseases post-assessment, and identify the underlying mechanisms.

This study explores the life-history parameters of female Merluccius capensis off South Africa (N = 1819) during 2014-2016, including gonadosomatic index (GSI), length-at-maturity, length-weight relationships, and condition indices (relative condition [k] and Fulton's condition factor [K]). We detected weak indications of two peaks of spawning within the year, the first in austral autumn from March to May, whereas the other in austral spring around August. GSI was slightly higher in spring and autumn, though still low at all maturity stages (≤7%), though the opposite was true for the actively spawning stage (≥7%) as well as access to less such data during winter- and summertime.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the impact of a new bCPAP protocol on respiratory outcomes for infants born before 32 weeks of gestation and weighing under 1250 g, spanning four time periods from 2012 to 2020.
  • - Results indicated that the implementation of the bCPAP protocol significantly reduced the rates of death and severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), with intubation rates also decreasing over time—especially in the delivery room.
  • - The findings suggest that using bCPAP as primary respiratory support improves outcomes for very preterm infants, demonstrating the effectiveness of this comprehensive protocol in clinical practice.

Background: Ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption is associated prospectively with weight gain and obesity in observational studies of adults. Unaccounted for confounding is a risk when attempting to make causal inference from observational studies. Limited research has examined how feasible it is that unmeasured confounding may explain associations between UPF consumption and weight gain in observational research.

Background: With the continuous improvement in economic levels in various countries and the rapid development of the Internet, adolescents' Internet use has become increasingly frequent. Many studies have explored the relationship between Internet use and adolescent health, but the possible mechanisms involved are unclear, and few have focused on Chinese adolescents.

Methods: Based on the data from the China Family Panel Studies 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020, this study used the ordered probit model and OLS model to explore the impact of Internet use on self-rated health and mental health of Chinese adolescents and analyzed the possible mechanisms and heterogeneity involved.

Lang Speech Hear Serv Sch

July 2024

Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology, The University of Melbourne, Parkville, Victoria, Australia.

Purpose: There are well-established guidelines for the recording, transcription, and analysis of spontaneous oral language samples by researchers, educators, and speech pathologists. In contrast, there is presently no consensus regarding methods for the written documentation of sign language samples. The Handshape Analysis Recording Tool (HART) is an innovative method for documenting and analyzing word level samples of signed languages in real time.
