Over recent years there has been an explosion in availability of technical devices to support diabetes self-management. But with this technology revolution comes new hurdles. On paper, the available diabetes technologies should mean that the vast majority of people with type 1 diabetes have optimal glycemic control and are using their preferred therapy choices.

In addition, high rates of comorbid internalizing disorders in autism spectrum disorder can lead to social isolation. With limited social activity participation, social deficits and internalizing problems in autism spectrum disorder may be related to participation, exposure, and practice with friends.

Methotrexate is a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor that interferes with DNA synthesis, DNA repair, and cellular replication. We present the first adult case of a patient who received intravenous contrast prior to administration of high-dose methotrexate, who subsequently experienced delayed methotrexate clearance and renal impairment necessitating the use of glucarpidase. This case displays a possible correlation between intravenous radiographic contrast administration and resulting toxicity due to delayed methotrexate clearance.

An exchange model of religion implies that if a secular entity such as government provides what people need, they will be less likely to seek help from supernatural entities. Controlling for quality of life and income inequality (Gini), we found that better government services were related to lower religiosity among countries (Study 1) and states in the United States (Study 2). Study 2 also showed that during 2008-2013, better government services in a specific year predicted lower religiosity 1 to 2 years later.

Lab-based interventions have been ineffective in changing individuals' implicit racial attitudes for more than brief durations, and exposure to high-status Black exemplars like Obama has proven ineffective in shifting societal-level racial attitudes. Antiracist social movements, however, offer a potential societal-level alternative for reducing racial bias. Racial attitudes were examined before and during Black Lives Matter (BLM) and its high points of struggle with 1,369,204 participants from 2009 to 2016.

Methods: This preliminary study compared hair cortisol levels and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) scores in predominately Caucasian mothers who delivered preterm ( n = 22) and term ( n = 30).

Objective To develop a clinical consensus statement on the use of sinus ostial dilation (SOD) of the paranasal sinuses. Methods An expert panel of otolaryngologists was assembled to represent general otolaryngology and relevant subspecialty societies. The target population is adults 18 years or older with chronic or recurrent rhinosinusitis (with or without nasal polyps, with or without prior sinus surgery) for whom SOD is being recommended, defined as endoscopic use of a balloon device to enlarge or open the outflow tracts of the maxillary, frontal, or sphenoid sinuses, as a standalone procedure or with endoscopic surgery.

Although intramedullary headless screw (IMHS) fixation is a promising minimally invasive surgical treatment option for unstable proximal phalanx fractures, a single IMHS may provide inadequate fixation for certain fracture patterns. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term clinical outcomes in a pilot series of patients with proximal phalanx fractures treated with dual antegrade IMHS fixation. We performed a retrospective chart review of proximal phalanx fractures treated with dual antegrade IMHS fixation with a minimum 1 year of follow-up.

Background: Enterococci are isolated frequently as pathogens in patients with intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) and may predict poor clinical outcomes. It remains controversial whether enterococci warrant an altered treatment approach with regard to antimicrobial treatment.
Patients And Methods: The study population was derived from the Study to Optimize Peritoneal Infection Therapy (STOP-IT) trial database.

In this article, I recommend that we implement a new platform for open communication of psychological science on a dedicated website to complement the current review and journal system, with reader reviews of the articles and with all behavioral scientists being eligible to publish and review articles. The judged merit of articles would be based on the citations and the ratings of the work by the whole scientific community.

Marriage is associated with reductions in both perceived stress and depressive symptoms, two constructs found to be influenced by common genetic effects. A study of sibling twins was used to test whether marriage decreases the proportion of variance in depressive symptoms accounted for by genetic and environmental effects underlying perceived stress. The sample consisted of 1,612 male and female twin pairs from the University of Washington Twin Registry.

Introduction: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health and criminal justice concern with significant impacts; especially high rates are seen among rural Hispanic American (HA) communities, the fastest growing population in the United States. They experience additional barriers to care including extreme poverty, lesser education, gender norms, and language and immigration issues.
Method: A systematic literature review was conducted using Cooper's framework to identify evidence supporting associations between interventions and prevention, reduction, and elimination of IPV among rural HA women.

To aid primary care providers in identifying people at increased risk for cognitive decline, we explored the relative importance of health and demographic variables in detecting potential cognitive impairment using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Participants were 94 older African Americans coming to see their primary care physicians for reasons other than cognitive complaints. Education was strongly associated with cognitive functioning.

Introduction There is an increased demand for intensive care unit (ICU) beds. We sought to determine if we could create a safe surge capacity model to increase ICU capacity by treating ICU patients in the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU) utilizing a collaborative model between an ICU service and a telemedicine service during peak ICU bed demand. Methods We evaluated patients managed by the surgical critical care service in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) compared to patients managed in the virtual intensive care unit (VICU) located within the PACU.
