Phosphate limitation is an important environmental stress that affects the metabolism of various organisms and, in particular, can trigger the virulence of numerous bacterial pathogens. Clostridium perfringens, a human pathogen, is one of the most common causes of enteritis necroticans, gas gangrene and food poisoning. Here, we focused on the high affinity phosphate-binding protein (PBP-1) of an ABC-type transporter, responsible for cellular phosphate uptake.

Cardiovascular risk assessment in kidney transplantation.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the most common cause of death after kidney transplantation worldwide, with the highest event rate in the early postoperative period. In an attempt to address this issue, screening for CVD prior to transplant is common, but the clinical utility of screening asymptomatic transplant candidates remains unclear. A large degree of variation exists among both transplant center practice patterns and clinical practice guidelines regarding who should be screened, and opinions are based on mixed observational data with great potential for bias.

Background: Little is known about living kidney donors' satisfaction with life (SWL) after donation. We compared donors' SWL to previously reported general population samples and investigated predictors of donors' SWL.

Methods: Three transplant centers mailed questionnaires to assess SWL, physical health, optimism, retrospective evaluation of the donation experience, and demographic characteristics to living kidney donors' homes between 2010 and 2012.

The purpose of the project was to evaluate an underwater weighing (UWW) and residual lung volume (RV) familiarization program developed for adults with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). UWW was conducted on 15 adults (10 men, 5 women) with PWS following a UWW familiarization program. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed no difference in percent body fat derived from UWW over the four sessions, F(3, 27) = 0.
