Background: Shared decision making is a consultative process designed to encourage patient participation in decision making by providing accurate information about the treatment options and supporting deliberation with the clinicians about treatment options. The process can be supported by resources such as decision aids and discussion guides designed to inform and facilitate often difficult conversations. As this process increases in use, there is opportunity to raise awareness of shared decision making and the international standards used to guide the development of quality resources for use in areas of prosthetic/orthotic care.

Methods: The study employed a qualitative design, using focus groups with African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic adults in two Chicago community areas. The study relied heavily on stakeholder input in creating the focus group guide, recruiting participants, and interpreting the analysis.

Objectives: To evaluate whether late-life depression mediates the association of subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) with all-cause mortality.
Method: Using data from 3,473 Cardiovascular Health Study participants, the Cox proportional hazards model was used to examine the direct and indirect (via late-life depression) effects of the association between baseline subclinical CVD and all-cause mortality with weights derived from multivariable logistic regression of late-life depression on subclinical CVD.
Results: Subclinical CVD led to a higher risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.
This study evaluated the measurement properties of the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) in a sample of 17,897 people with spinal cord injury (48%, n = 8,566), traumatic brain injury (44%, n = 7,941), and burn injury (8%, n = 1,390), 1 year following injury. We examined measurement invariance across the groups, unidimensionality, local independence, reliability from a classical test and item response theory (IRT) framework, and fit to a unidimensional IRT model. The results support unidimensionality and local independence of the SWLS.

We used Medicare claims and the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey from 2002 to 2010 and an instrumental variables approach. Gaining drug insurance through Part D was associated with a statistically significant 8.

Background: Individuals with stroke usually show reduced muscle activities of the paretic leg and asymmetrical gait pattern during walking.
Objective: To determine whether applying a resistance force to the nonparetic leg would enhance the muscle activities of the paretic leg and improve the symmetry of spatiotemporal gait parameters in individuals with poststroke hemiparesis.
Methods: Fifteen individuals with chronic poststroke hemiparesis participated in this study.

Children with medical complexity (CMC) account for a disproportionate share of pediatric health-care utilization and cost that is largely attributable to long hospitalizations, frequent hospital readmissions, and high use of emergency departments. In response, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Health Care Innovation Center supports the development and testing of innovative health-care payment and service delivery models. The purpose of this article is to describe the CMS-funded coordinated health care for complex kids (CHECK) program, an innovative system of health-care delivery that provides improved, comprehensive, and well-coordinated services to CMC.

Food allergies affect up to 8% of children in the United States and may occasionally lead to severe life-threatening reactions. Because there is currently no cure for food allergies, strict avoidance of the allergen-containing foods is the only means of preventing an allergic reaction. Consumers rely on food manufacturers to reliably track and declare the presence of food allergens in products.

Background: When walking in footwear with a positive "heel sole differential", the sagittal kinematics of the base of the footwear appear to mimic normal barefoot foot kinematics, creating an "effective foot," yet sagittal shank, thigh, and trunk kinematics appear to remain unchanged. These observations have not been quantified.
Objectives: To quantify these observations by assessing the effect of different heel sole differentials on sagittal shank and foot segment kinematics of able-bodied walking.

Although global movement abnormalities in the lower extremity poststroke have been studied, the expression of specific motor impairments such as weakness and abnormal muscle and joint torque coupling patterns have received less attention. We characterized changes in strength, muscle coactivation and associated joint torque couples in the paretic and nonparetic extremity of 15 participants with chronic poststroke hemiparesis (age 59.6 ± 15.

Background: Due to advancements in three-dimensional printing, custom-made prostheses are becoming more viable options for persons with difficult cases of prosthetic management. The purpose of this article was to develop a custom voluntary-closing, body-powered thumb mechanism for a partial-hand amputee who had amputations of the index finger and thumb on the left, non-dominant hand. Case description and methods: The prosthesis model was manufactured using rapid prototype technology and was developed to provide greater force and functionality, and to decrease overall size compared to traditional hand prostheses.

Method: We analyzed baseline, 1-year, and 2-year in-person interview data collected from Hispanics/Latinos aged ≥60 years participating in an exercise intervention across 27 senior centers ( N = 572).
Results: Mean age was 73.
Background: While Amputee Mobility Predictor scores differ between Medicare Functional Classification Levels (K-level), this does not demonstrate that the Amputee Mobility Predictor can accurately predict K-level.
Objectives: To determine how accurately K-level could be predicted using the Amputee Mobility Predictor in combination with patient characteristics for persons with transtibial and transfemoral amputation.
Study Design: Prediction.

This study tested the use of a customized body-machine interface (BoMI) for enhancing functional capabilities in persons with cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI). The interface allows people with cSCI to operate external devices by reorganizing their residual movements. This was a proof-of-concept phase 0 interventional nonrandomized clinical trial.

The purpose of this study was to understand the post-discharge needs of violently injured patients and their families to improve health outcomes and reduce the impact of gun violence. We recruited 10 patients from the trauma registry of a Midwestern university hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center (L1TC). After obtaining the informed consent, semi-structured, face-to-face, in-depth interviews were conducted.

Although the midcarpal joint is critical for kinematic coupling, many surgeries, such as 4-corner fusion (4CF) and scaphoidexcision 4-corner fusion (SE4CF), modify the midcarpal joint. This study examines how 4CF and SE4CF influence kinematic coupling by quantifying wrist axes of rotation.

Perspective-taking often increases generosity in behavior and attributions. We present an intentions-based account to explain how perspective-taking can both decrease and increase moral condemnation. Consistent with past research, we predicted perspective-taking would reduce condemnation when the perspective-taker initially attributed benevolent intent to a transgressor.

Rationale: Despite significant advances in knowledge of the genetic architecture of asthma, specific contributors to the variability in the burden between populations remain uncovered.
Objectives: To identify additional genetic susceptibility factors of asthma in European American and African American populations.
Methods: A phenotyping algorithm mining electronic medical records was developed and validated to recruit cases with asthma and control subjects from the Electronic Medical Records and Genomics network.
Using the theory of planned behavior, the study aim was to determine the relationships among nurses' beliefs, attitudes, perceived norms, perceived behavioral control, intentions, and behavior regarding pain management for hospitalized elderly patients with postoperative pain. A cross-sectional design was used with a convenience sample of 140 nurses working in adult surgical units at three hospitals. Based on path analyses, nurses' behavioral, normative, and control beliefs, respectively, had direct effects on their attitudes, perceived norms, and perceived behavioral control regarding pain management.
