Article Synopsis
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) with anxiety disorders poses significant health risks, highlighting the urgent need to understand the role of urea, a key toxin that accumulates in both CKD and neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Research has indicated that high urea levels are linked to anxiety-like behaviors in mouse models of CKD, suggesting a connection between urea metabolism and mood disorders in patients.
  • The study identifies specific molecular mechanisms involved, particularly the down-regulation of Egr1 and changes in myelin-related signaling in oligodendrocyte progenitor cells, which may open pathways for new treatment strategies targeting anxiety in CKD patients.

Pretreatment somatic mutations influence acute myeloid leukemia (AML) pathogenesis and responses to chemotherapy. Integration of cytogenetic abnormalities and molecular mutations, co-occurring and in isolation, have resulted in a more refined prognostic assessment. In addition, research performed over the last few years has led to the development of novel therapies and new drug approvals in patients with both newly diagnosed and relapsed/refractory (R/R) AML.

In 2011, universal lipid screening was recommended for children aged 9 to 11 years; the impact of this recommendation on the lipid clinic setting is unknown. We examined the rate of primary and secondary dyslipidemia diagnoses in a lipid clinic before (2010-2011) and after (2012-2015) the guideline recommendation. We conducted a retrospective study of new clinic patients aged 0 to 20 years seen between April 2010 and April 2015.

Counterattitudinal-argument generation is a powerful tool for opening people up to alternative views. On the basis of decades of research, it should be especially effective when people adopt the perspective of individuals who hold alternative views. In the current research, however, we found the opposite: In three preregistered experiments (total N = 2,734), we found that taking the perspective of someone who endorses a counterattitudinal view lowers receptiveness to that view and reduces attitude change following a counterattitudinal-argument-generation task.

Attrition is a major problem in longitudinal neuroimaging studies, as it may lead to unreliable estimates of the stability of trait-like processes over time, of the identification of risk factors for clinical outcomes, and of the effects of treatment. Identification of characteristics associated with attrition has implications for participant recruitment and participant retention to achieve representative longitudinal samples. We investigated inhibitory control deficits, head motion, and resting-state functional connectivity within the cognitive control network (CCN) as predictors of attrition.

A growing body of work suggests that teaching college students a contextual understanding of difference-that students' different experiences in college are the result of participating in different contexts before college-can improve the academic performance of first-generation students (i.e., students whose parents do not have 4-year college degrees).

We investigated Asian Americans' perceptions of Asian-White biracials. Because the Asian/White boundary may be more permeable than other minority/White boundaries, we reasoned that Asian Americans are more likely than Black Americans to be skeptical of biracials, perceiving that biracials would prefer to identify as White and would be disloyal to Asians, consequently categorizing them as more outgroup. We further reasoned that Asian Americans' concerns about and exclusion of biracials would be predicted by greater perceived discrimination against Asian Americans, which increases the incentive for biracials to pass into the higher status racial group.

Are anticoagulants still indicated in pulmonary arterial hypertension?

Pulm Circ

October 2018

2 Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Pulmonary Vascular Disease Program, Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, Chicago, IL, USA.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a type of pulmonary hypertension that is a progressive, fatal disease. Multiple underlying mechanisms for PAH have been identified, including vasoconstriction, intimal proliferation, medial hypertrophy, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and in situ thrombosis. Because it is an uncommon disease, it has been challenging to identify a specific treatment that targets the dominant disease mechanism in a given patient.

Use of metformin for weight loss for children in a clinical setting has not been well described; therefore, we aimed to identify characteristics of obese patients prescribed metformin in a clinical setting and evaluate changes in anthropometric measures. Records of obese patients aged 10 to 18 years without diabetes attending an academic endocrinology practice from 2009 to 2013 were reviewed. Analyses assessed changes in anthropometric measures (weight, body mass index [BMI], and BMI z-score) over 12 months between those prescribed metformin (n = 49) and those not prescribed metformin (n = 142).

Obesity, hypertension, and diabetes have risen dramatically in Asia, but few cohort studies track age and secular trends in these conditions. We use Cebu (The Philippines) Longitudinal Health and Nutrition survey data to document 1998 to 2015 prevalence and co-occurrence of body mass index (BMI; >25 kg/m), high waist circumference (WC; >80 cm), elevated blood pressure (EBP; systolic ⩾130 or diastolic ⩾85 mm Hg), and type 2 diabetes among ~2000 women aged 29 to 62 years in 1998; and identify their relationship to community, household, and individual factors using longitudinal logistic regression. Prevalence (1998-2015) rates were 35% to 49%, BMI >25 kg/m; 32% to 58% high WC; 21% to 59% EBP; and 2% to 14% diabetes.

Poststroke deficits in upper extremity function occur during activities of daily living due to motor impairments of the paretic arm, including weakness and abnormal synergies, both of which result in altered use of the paretic arm. Over time, chronic disuse and a resultant flexed elbow posture may result in secondary changes in the musculoskeletal system that may limit use of the arm and impact functional mobility. This study utilized extended field-of-view ultrasound to measure fascicle lengths of the biceps (long head) and triceps (distal portion of the lateral head) brachii in order to investigate secondary alterations in muscles of the paretic elbow.

Background: Peripheral axon regeneration is improved when the nerve lesion under consideration has recently been preceded by another nerve injury. This is known as the conditioning lesion effect (CLE). While the CLE is one of the most robust and well characterized means to enhance motor axon regeneration in experimental models, it is not considered a clinically feasible strategy.

Previous research has shown that during her monthly peak fertile window, a woman competes with other women for a suitable mate. Drawing upon research on ovulation and socially constructed meanings of the color red, we examine how a woman's fertility status and red clothing worn by a target woman change perceptions of the target, as well as behaviors toward the target. Following previous research on the ovulatory status and color red effects, we rely on both hormonal and self-reported fertility data.
