Women's Attitudes Toward Intimate Partner Violence in Ethiopia: The Role of Social Norms in the Interview Context.

This study draws on a social norms framework to examine the influence of interview context-specifically the presence of other women and men-on women's reported attitudes toward intimate partner violence (IPV) in Ethiopia, where IPV rates are among the highest in the world. The sample (16,515 women, ages 15-49) was taken from Ethiopia's 2011 Demographic and Health Survey. Results showed the odds of women "justifying" IPV to be nearly twice as great when other women were present during the interview, and nearly half in the presence of men.

Parental concerns are useful tools to help pediatric care providers identify the presence of developmental and behavioral problems. This study sought to learn whether specific parental concerns helped predict diagnoses in a tertiary developmental clinic. Parents of preschoolers who attended a preschool developmental clinic (n = 101) were surveyed about behavioral and developmental concerns and their concerns about possible diagnoses.

An Evaluation of Two Dating Violence Prevention Programs on a College Campus.

Dating violence is a serious and prevalent public health problem that is associated with numerous negative physical and psychological health outcomes, and yet there has been limited evaluation of prevention programs on college campuses. A recent innovation in campus prevention focuses on mobilizing bystanders to take action. To date, bystander programs have mainly been compared with no treatment control groups raising questions about what value is added to dating violence prevention by focusing on bystanders.

The case for a more diverse health-care workforce has never been stronger given the rapidly changing demographics of the United States and the continued underrepresentation of certain racial and ethnic groups across the health professions. To date, progress toward diversifying the health-care workforce has been and continues to be deterred by a mix of factors at the societal, institutional, and individual levels. Since the 1970s, the Federal government has invested resources in initiatives that support the training and development of the existing workforce as well increase the supply of new health professionals-particularly those from underrepresented minority groups and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Living in Limbo: Contested Narratives of Patients With Chronic Symptoms Following Lyme Disease.

Persistent, subjective symptoms of unknown etiology following treatment for Lyme disease have been termed post- treatment Lyme disease syndrome or chronic Lyme disease (PTLDS/CLD). The objective of this study was to give primacy to the patient experience of this medically contested condition by eliciting patient illness narratives and identifying emergent issues through semistructured interviews conducted among 29 participants. We used thematic narrative analysis to identify three predominant themes: (a) Physical and social limitations lead to a "new normal" characterized by fundamental shifts of ways of being in the world, (b) disease-specific factors contribute to symptom and illness invisibility that affects social support in nuanced ways, and (c) pervasive medical uncertainty regarding PTLDS/CLD promotes an increased sense of personal responsibility for care.

Effective reinforcement learning following cerebellar damage requires a balance between exploration and motor noise.

Reinforcement and error-based processes are essential for motor learning, with the cerebellum thought to be required only for the error-based mechanism. Here we examined learning and retention of a reaching skill under both processes. Control subjects learned similarly from reinforcement and error-based feedback, but showed much better retention under reinforcement.

This research is an examination of the predictive validity of the Lethality Screen, a tool used in conjunction with the Lethality Assessment Program (LAP). This intimate partner violence (IPV) risk assessment is an 11-item version of the Danger Assessment (DA) that was designed to be user-friendly for first responders and to maximize sensitivity. Objective: The aim of this study is to understand the impact of a 5-day period of nap restriction on sleep patterns and cognitive function in typically developing preschoolers, aged 3 to 4 years.

Method: Following 1 week of baseline assessment, 28 children were randomly assigned to either a "napping as usual" group ( n = 15) or a 5-day period of nap restriction ( n = 13). Efficacy, Safety, and Tolerability of a Novel Methylphenidate Extended-Release Oral Suspension (MEROS) in ADHD.

Method: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over, efficacy, safety, and tolerability study of MEROS in 45 children aged 6 to 12 years (open-label dose-optimization phase, followed by double-blind cross-over period).
