Soy consumption in human diet has been linked to decreased incidence of a variety of cancers, suggesting a potential role of soy products in cancer prevention and control. Furthermore, a substantial body of evidence in the literature suggests that soy supplementation may improve the efficacy and prevent the adverse effects of cancer chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Isoflavones constitute the predominant anticancer bioactive compounds in soy.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder and average IQ exhibit a widening discrepancy between lagging adaptive skills relative to their cognitive potential, but it is unknown when this discrepancy emerges in development. To address this important question, we measured adaptive and cognitive skills longitudinally, from 12-36 months, in 96 low-risk typically developing infants and 69 high-risk siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder who at 36 months were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder ( = 21), the broader autism phenotype ( = 19), or showed no concerns (unaffected;  = 29). Results indicate that both cognitive and adaptive communication skills remained stable over time for all four groups, but toddlers with autism spectrum disorder and the broader autism phenotype failed to keep pace with unaffected and typically developing toddlers with regard to adaptive socialization skills and, to a lesser extent, daily living skills.

Multiple myeloma is a plasma cell neoplasm that has seen impressive improvements in outcomes in recent years with combination therapies, such as proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory drugs. Histone deacetylase inhibition is an additional unique mechanism of action with established biological relevance in multiple myeloma. Panobinostat is the first histone deacetylase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma in patients who have received at least two prior regimens, including bortezomib and an immunomodulatory agent.

Background Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed for many reasons, most commonly for chronic rhinosinusitis refractory to medical treatment. A paradoxical middle turbinate is an anatomic variant that can hinder endoscopic access to the sinuses. No publication has addressed how to surgically treat a paradoxical middle turbinate.

Imaging of Children With Nontraumatic Headaches.

AJR Am J Roentgenol

January 2018

1 Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Emory University School of Medicine, 201 Dowman Dr, Atlanta, GA 30322.

Objective: Headache in children is a common symptom and often is worrisome for clinicians and parents because of the breadth of possible underlying significant abnormalities, including meningitis, brain neoplasms, and intracranial hemorrhage. For this reason, many children with headaches undergo neuroimaging. Most neuroimaging studies performed of children with headaches have normal findings but may lead to significant downstream effects, including unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation or sedation, as well as unnecessary cost to the health care system.

Aims Haemodynamic parameters during and after exercise test seem to have a role in predicting cardiovascular events. We sought to evaluate the potential different responses in exercise capacity, heart rate and blood pressure levels in relation to major cardiovascular disease risk factors, among individuals undergoing exercise tolerance testing. Methods and results Consecutive individuals ( N = 12,327), aged 55 ± 11.

Assessment of Protein Turnover in Health and Disease.

Nutr Clin Pract

April 2017

4 Section of Nephrology and Hypertension, NorthShore University HealthSystem, University of Chicago, Evanston, Illinois, USA.

To identify protein requirements, it is necessary to be familiar with basic physiology, practical methods, and dose response of protein delivery. This review evaluates available methodology, with emphasis on the limitations of existing techniques most often related to the underlying assumption. Historically, nitrogen balance has been the dominating technique.

Evidence-based interventions to improve health care and medical education face multiple complex barriers to adoption and success. Implementation science focuses on the period following research dissemination, which is necessary but insufficient to address important gaps in clinician performance and patient outcomes. This article describes the forces on health care institutions, medical schools, physician clinicians, and trainees that have created the imperative to design educational interventions to address the gap between evidence and practice.

Joint attention, or the shared focus of attention between objects or events and a social partner, is a crucial milestone in the development of social communication and a notable area of deficit in children with autism spectrum disorder. While valid parent-report screening measures of social communication are available, the majority of these measures are designed to assess a wide range of behaviors. Targeted assessment of joint attention and related skills is primarily limited to semi-structured, examiner-led interactions, which are time-consuming and laborious to score.

Neoadjuvant chemoradiation followed by orthotopic liver transplantation in cholangiocarcinomas: the emory experience.

1 Department of Radiation Oncology, GRU Cancer Center, Georgia Regents University, Augusta, GA 30912, USA ; 2 Emory University School of Medicine/Radiation Oncology, Atlanta, GA 30322, USA.

Background: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a bile duct tumor with a grim prognosis. The median survival after radiotherapy of unresectable disease is 9-12 months. The following is a review of our experience with neoadjuvant (NEO) chemoradiation followed by orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) for CCA.

Emerging literature suggests that self-compassion may be an important concept for understanding recovery from the impact of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study explored the interconnection among self-compassion, resilience, emotion dysregulation, and PTSD symptom severity in a sample of treatment-seeking women with PTSD. We predicted that self-compassion would be negatively related to PTSD symptom severity and to emotion dysregulation, and positively related to resilience.

"Do-it-yourself in vitro vasculature that recapitulates in vivo geometries for investigating endothelial-blood cell interactions".

Sci Rep

July 2015

Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University [2] Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology [3] Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta, Aflac Cancer &Blood Disorders Center [4] Institute of Electronics and Nanotechnology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, United States.

Investigating biophysical cellular interactions in the circulation currently requires choosing between in vivo models, which are difficult to interpret due in part to the hemodynamic and geometric complexities of the vasculature; or in vitro systems, which suffer from non-physiologic assumptions and/or require specialized microfabrication facilities and expertise. To bridge that gap, we developed an in vitro "do-it-yourself" perfusable vasculature model that recapitulates in vivo geometries, such as aneurysms, stenoses, and bifurcations, and supports endothelial cell culture. These inexpensive, disposable devices can be created rapidly (<2 hours) with high precision and repeatability, using standard off-the-shelf laboratory supplies.

Objective: To examine the distribution of parent- and teacher-rated ADHD symptoms in a Turkish community sample to identify children at high risk for ADHD and to explore the psychosocial correlates of these high-risk children.

Method: An 18-item SNAP-IV (Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham) and a three-item impairment scale were completed by parents and teachers on 3,110 children between 7 and 14 years of age from three public schools in Istanbul.

Results: Using various case definitions for ADHD, we observed a range of prevalence estimates based on parent (2.
