Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Reinnervation in Rats Posttransection: Neurotrophic Factor Expression over Time.

Objective: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury causes vocal fold paralysis from which functional recovery is typically absent due to nonselective reinnervation. This study investigates expression of axon guidance cues and their modulators relative to the chronology of reinnervation by examining the expression of glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), netrin 1, and laminin 111 (LAMA1) in nonpooled laryngeal muscles. This study is the first to describe the post-RLN injury expression pattern of LAMA1, a target of particular interest as it has been shown to switch netrin 1-mediated growth cone attraction to repulsion.

Meeting the evolving demands of neurointervention: Implementation and utilization of nurse practitioners.

Growth in the neurointerventional field, as a result of the emergence of thrombectomy as the gold standard treatment for large vessel occlusions, has created complex challenges. In an effort to meet evolving demands and fill workflow gaps, nurse practitioners have taken on highly specialized roles. Neurointerventional care has rapidly evolved similarly to interventional cardiac care, in that nurse practitioners are successfully being incorporated as procedural assistants in catheterization laboratories.

Management of Adolescent-Parent Dyads' Discordance for Willingness to Participate in a Reproductive Health Clinical Trial.

The objective of this study is to understand the resolution of discordance between adolescent-parent dyads about participation in research. Adolescent (14-17 years) and parent dyads were recruited from NYC pediatric clinics to assess attitudes toward research participation. A subset of dyads participated in videotaped discussions about participation in a hypothetical study.

Performance Testing of RREB1, MYB, and CCND1 Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization in Spindle-Cell and Desmoplastic Melanoma Argues for a Two-Step Test Algorithm.

Background: Diagnostic confirmation of spindle-cell melanoma (SM) or desmoplastic melanoma (DM) as a melanoma can be challenging. In conventional melanoma (CM), a recently established fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay for RREB1, MYB, CCND1 can be helpful. Here, we determined the presence of RREB1, MYB, and CCND1 abnormalities in an SM/DM/mixed cohort.

Transference-focused psychotherapy training during residency: an aide to learning psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Competency in psychodynamic psychotherapy is a requirement for residency training in psychiatry. However, for a variety of reasons, learning psychodynamic psychotherapy is difficult for residents. In this article, we share our experience in an elective in Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), a manualized treatment for severe personality disorders.

Treatment interruption and discontinuation in radiotherapy for rectal cancer.

Radiotherapy with chemotherapy for rectal cancer reduces local recurrence risk. Of 113 patients (59 male, 54 female) undergoing treatment at New York Presbyterian Hospital, 1998-2007, 6 discontinued radiotherapy; all were female. Females were also more likely to have a treatment interruption (35% vs 12%, p = .
