Cardiovascular disease is unanimously recognized as the major burden in type 2 diabetes, in terms of both mortality and morbidity. There is an extensive evidence coming from epidemiological studies that supports this statement. The presence of the metabolic syndrome confers a higher risk of long-term death, and dysglycemia appears to be responsible for the most of the excess risk.
