A variant form of epsilon toxin (Y30A-Y196A) with mutations, which shows reduced binding to Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells and reduced toxicity in mice, has been proposed as the next-generation enterotoxaemia vaccine. Here we show that, unexpectedly, the Y30A-Y196A variant does not show a reduction in toxicity towards Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells engineered to express the putative receptor for the toxin (myelin and lymphocyte protein; MAL). The further addition of mutations to residues in a second putative receptor binding site of the Y30A-Y196A variant further reduces toxicity, and we selected Y30A-Y196A-A168F for further study.

Neuropsychological assessments results have significant implications for pediatric populations, based upon the assumption that the young person has adopted an effortful approach and has engaged in assessment. There is a commonly-accepted risk to assuming the validity of neuropsychological assessment results with adults, and, therefore, performance validity testing (PVT) has become a major topic of research and investigation and has become an accepted part of routine assessment. The same approach has not been adopted in assessment with children and a paucity of studies has focused on PVT in children.

Background: The internet is a potentially promising medium for delivering weight loss interventions. The current study sought to explore factors that might influence primary care patients' initial uptake and continued use (up to four-weeks) of such programmes to help inform the development of novel, or refinement of existing, weight management interventions.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 patients purposively sampled based on age, gender and BMI from a single rural general practice.

In this article, we present a qualitative exploration of the psychological and communication processes that occur within an intervention to improve self-care for people with asthma. In the context of a primary-care-based trial of the intervention, we collected data at three time points for 21 patients, comprising 2 audiotaped consultations (nurse and patient together) and individual semistructured interviews 3 months after the second consultation. Using framework analysis, we identified both psychological processes (illness understanding, affective response to asthma, and reasoned motivation) and patient-provider interactions (active patient involvement and individual tailoring).
