Scientists have known for about 40 years that there are several undiscovered Siren species in the southeastern U.S., with one new species, S. sphagnicola, just described.
Research revealed that S. lacertina and S. reticulata are clearly distinct species with strong genetic support, while five lineages of S. intermedia show significant genetic variation.
The study also redefined the geographical range of S. intermedia and elevated one lineage to species status, incorporating elements from various U.S. regions and northeastern Mexico.
