2-Chloro-1-(1-ethoxyvinyl)pyridinium triflate and several other bench-stable -(1-alkoxyvinyl) 2-halopyridinium triflates have been developed as reagents for the synthesis of valuable 2-aminopyridine scaffolds via unusually mild SAr substitutions with amine nucleophiles. Advantages of this approach include an operationally simple mix-and-stir procedure at room temperature or mild heat and ambient atmosphere and without the need for transition metal catalysts, coupling reagents, or high-boiling solvents. The stable -(1-ethoxyvinyl) moiety serves as a dual SAr-activating group and pyridine -protecting group that can be cleaved under thermal, acidic, or oxidative conditions.

The zinc-finger protein Zelda (Zld) is a key activator of zygotic transcription in early Drosophila embryos. Here, we study Zld-dependent regulation of the seven-striped pattern of the pair-rule gene even-skipped (eve). Individual stripes are regulated by discrete enhancers that respond to broadly distributed activators; stripe boundaries are formed by localized repressors encoded by the gap genes.

ANSTO Lucas Heights, New Illawarra Rd, Lucas Heights NSW, 2234, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • High-latitude surface energy budgets (SEBs) are important for understanding land-climate interactions in the Arctic, but uncertainties in their predictions remain.
  • A study analyzed SEB observations from 1994 to 2021 and found that vegetation type is a key predictor of SEB components during Arctic summers, often matching or exceeding differences seen between vegetation and glacier surfaces.
  • The study also revealed that the timing of SEB fluxes varies significantly with vegetation type, affecting snow-cover dynamics and suggesting that better representations of Arctic vegetation in models could enhance future Earth system predictions.

COVID-19 bereavement, depressive symptoms, and binge drinking.

SSM Ment Health

December 2021

Hamilton College, Department of Sociology, 198 College Hill Rd. Clinton, NY, 13323, USA.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the death of over half a million Americans, leaving in its wake widespread grief and despair. Using national survey data (n = 1998) and a treatment-weighting strategy, this study examines how COVID-19 bereavement associates with depressive symptoms and binge drinking. After adjustment for non-random exposure to COVID-19 bereavement, I find that respondents who have lost someone close to them to the virus report greater depressive symptomology and more frequent binge drinking.

-Quaternized ketene ,-acetals are typically an unstable, transient class of compounds most commonly observed as reactive intermediates. In this report, we describe a general synthetic approach to a variety of bench-stable -quaternized ketene ,-acetals via treatment of pyridine or aniline bases with acetylenic ethers and an appropriate Brønsted or Lewis acid (triflic acid, triflimide, or scandium(III) triflate). The resulting pyridinium and anilinium salts can be used as reagents or synthetic intermediates in multiple reaction types.

Background: Although American crows are a key indicator species for West Nile virus (WNV) and mount among the highest viremias reported for any host, the importance of crows in the WNV transmission cycle has been called into question because of their consistent underrepresentation in studies of Culex blood meal sources. Here, we test the hypothesis that this apparent underrepresentation could be due, in part, to underrepresentation of crow nesting habitat from mosquito sampling designs. Specifically, we examine how the likelihood of a crow blood meal changes with distance to and timing of active crow nests in a Davis, California, population.

June 2020

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Beaumont Health System, 3601 W. 13 Mile Road, Royal Oak, MI 48073, USA.

Epilepsy not-otherwise-specified (ENOS) is one of the most common causes of chronic disorders impacting human health, with complex multifactorial etiology and clinical presentation. Understanding the metabolic processes associated with the disorder may aid in the discovery of preventive and therapeutic measures. Post-mortem brain samples were harvested from the frontal cortex (BA8/46) of people diagnosed with ENOS cases ( = 15) and age- and sex-matched control subjects ( = 15).

Parting ways: Sex-based differences in premedical attrition.

Soc Sci Med

June 2019

Hamilton College, Department of Sociology, 198 College Hill Rd, Clinton, NY 13323, USA. Electronic address:

Despite women's greater propensity to enter college aspiring to careers in medicine, they are less likely than men to persist in these ambitions. Past research suggests that students' experiences in coursework strongly influence their decision to continue along or depart from the premedical track, yet it remains unclear whether women and men have differential experiences in coursework that contribute to sex-based disparities in premedical attrition. To gain insight into whether and how premeds' experiences in coursework contribute to gendered patterns of attrition, this study employs a mixed methods design that combines longitudinal survey data collected from premedical students at a large state university with in-depth interview data collected from a subset of respondents.

Friend or frenemy? Experiential homophily and educational track attrition among premedical students.

Hamilton College, Department of Sociology, 198 College Hill Rd, Clinton, NY, 13323, USA. Electronic address:

Support from experientially similar others-individuals who have been through the same life transition or faced a similar set of stressful circumstances-has been shown to be effective for coping with issues ranging from chronic illness to bereavement. Less research has examined how networks comprised of experientially similar others may shape academic outcomes. Using longitudinal egocentric network data collected from early career premedical students at a large research university (n = 268), results indicate that greater experiential homophily in premeds' networks are associated with a lower likelihood of departing from the premedical career track at the end of the academic year.

Subjective social status and premedical students' attitudes towards medical school.

Soc Sci Med

July 2017

Hamilton College, Department of Sociology, 198 College Hill Rd., Clinton, NY 13323, USA. Electronic address:

Although students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to depart from the medical education pipeline, little is known about how premedical students' social origins influence the adversities they face, the resources they possess, or the internal struggles they confront in deciding whether or not to pursue a career in medicine. Using original data collected from premedical students at a flagship state university in the Midwest (N = 364), this study explores how subjective social status shapes students' reservations about medical school attendance and their perceptions of external pressure to pursue a career in medicine. Status-based discrepancies in financial strains, social capital, and interpersonal stressors-and the degree to which variation across these measures mediates status differences in medical school outlook-are also explored.

Climate effects on late-season flight times of Massachusetts butterflies.

Int J Biometeorol

September 2017

Massachusetts Butterfly Club, 108 Walden St., Cambridge, MA, 02140, USA.

Although the responses of living organisms to climate change are being widely investigated, little attention has been given to such effects late in the growing season. We studied the late-season flight times of 20 species of butterflies in a geographically limited region, the state of Massachusetts in the USA, by examining change in dates of flight over a 22-year period and in response to average monthly temperature and precipitation. By analyzing the last 10% of each year's observations reported by observers of the Massachusetts Butterfly Club, we found that seven species remain in flight significantly later into the fall than they did two decades earlier, while two species show reduced late-season flight.

Article Synopsis
  • Leucocytozoon is a blood parasite that infects various bird families, particularly studied in corvids for over a century, with two main species identified: L. sakharoffi in crows and L. berestneffi in magpies and blue jays.
  • Recent research aimed to analyze genetic data from these parasites to confirm or reevaluate their taxonomic classifications, as previous studies had shown limited genetic information.
  • The study found that most parasite lineages clustered together, indicating no clear distinction between the two species and suggesting that the established host specificity needs to be reassessed.

In the current study, we examined the effects of women's suppressing negative gender stereotypes while interacting with a male confederate. Compared with control participants, those who suppressed negative thoughts about women's ability experienced less self-confidence, lower self-esteem, and were more nonverbally submissive during the interaction, particularly if they were high in stigma consciousness (Pinel, 1999). These findings illustrate the negative intra- and interpersonal consequences of stigma suppression.
