Climate change and anthropogenic activity pose severe threats to water availability in drylands. A better understanding of water availability response to these threats could improve our ability to adapt and mitigate climate and anthropogenic effects. Here, we present a Mesic Vegetation Persistence (MVP) workflow that takes every usable image in the Sentinel (10-m) and Landsat (30-m) archives to generate a dense time-series of water availability that is continuously updated as new images become available in Google Earth Engine.

In our last work, we introduced a customizable aptamer transducer (AT) that could successfully feed-forward many different output domains to target a variety of reporters and amplification reaction networks. Background: Patients critically ill with COVID-19 are at risk for hospital-acquired pressure injury, including device-related pressure injury.

Methods: Braden Scale predictive validity was compared between patients with and without COVID-19, and a logistic regression model was developed to identify risk factors for device-related pressure injury.

Solution-based biosensors that utilize aptamers have been engineered in a variety of formats to detect a range of analytes for both medical and environmental applications. However, since aptamers have fixed base sequences, incorporation of aptamers into DNA strand displacement networks for feed-forward signal amplification and processing requires significant redesign of downstream DNA reaction networks. We designed a novel aptamer transduction network that releases customizable output domains, which can then be used to initiate downstream strand displacement reaction networks without any sequence redesign of the downstream reaction networks.

Oncostatin M (OSM) is a pleiotropic, interleukin-6 family inflammatory cytokine that plays an important role in inflammatory diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer progression and metastasis. Recently, elevated OSM levels have been found in the serum of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units. Short-run environmental effects of COVID-19: Evidence from forest fires.

The outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has raised questions about changes in economic production and subsequent effects on the environment. This article employs satellite data on real-time active fire locations in Nepal to evaluate the short-term environmental effects of COVID-19. Using plausibly exogenous variation in the number of reported COVID-19 cases across the country, this study finds that the incidence of COVID-19 led to a strong negative effect on the incidence of human-induced forest fires.

Genetic analysis of Bromus tectorum (Poaceae) in the Mediterranean region: biogeographical pattern of native populations.

Genetic diversity within and among 42 native populations of Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass) was characterized within two regions, the eastern Mediterranean and the western Mediterranean. Two hypotheses were tested for the genetic diversity of these populations: (1) populations from the eastern Mediterranean are more genetically diverse compared with populations to the west, a potential consequence of the species' westward dispersal with the spread of agriculture, and (2) populations across the Mediterranean contain comparable genetic diversity but display high genetic differentiation, a potential consequence of both regions having served as refugia during glacial advances in the late Quaternary Period. Populations in the eastern Mediterranean possess 16 polymorphic loci and 37 multilocus genotypes.
