Assessing the impact of environmental education in a critical orangutan landscape in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Gunung Palung National Park (GPNP) and the surrounding region in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, host a significant population of Critically Endangered Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii) amidst various conservation challenges, including habitat destruction, the illegal pet trade, and human-wildlife conflict. The Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program (GPOCP) employs diverse strategies, including environmental education, to address these challenges. Environmental education helps to connect local students with conservation efforts, educate them about endangered endemic species, and highlight the relationship between human behavior and ecosystem health.

Factors Associated With Changes in Alcohol Use During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Transition Among People With HIV in South Africa and Uganda.

Identifying factors associated with alcohol use changes during pregnancy is important for developing interventions for people with HIV (PWH). Pregnant PWH (n = 202) initiating antiretroviral therapy in Uganda and South Africa completed two assessments, 6 months apart (T1, T2). Categories were derived based on AUDIT-C scores: "no use" (AUDIT-C = 0 at T1 and T2), "new use" (AUDIT-C = 0 at T1, >0 at T2), "quit" (AUDIT-C > 0 at T1, =0 at T2), and "continued use" (AUDIT-C > 0, T1 and T2).

Understanding the Mental Health Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic Among Individuals With Chronic Illness.

People with chronic illnesses are vulnerable to stress and psychopathology during population-level disasters, as a subset of individuals with disabilities. We aimed to examine the relationships between chronic illness, cumulative and specific stressors, and probable depression, probable anxiety, and post-traumatic stress in an under-resourced urban population in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using cross-sectional survey data collected in April 2020, we utilized bivariate chi-square analyses and multivariable logistic regression models to estimate differences in and adjusted odds of stressor endorsement and diagnostic prevalence between people with and without chronic illness.

An Effect of Gaze Direction in Cocktail Party Listening.

It is well established that gaze direction can influence auditory spatial perception, but the implications of this interaction for performance in complex listening tasks is unclear. In the current study, we investigated whether there is a measurable effect of gaze direction on speech intelligibility in a "cocktail party" listening situation. We presented sequences of digits from five loudspeakers positioned at 0°,  ±  15°, and ± 30° azimuth, and asked participants to repeat back the digits presented from a designated target loudspeaker.

Body mass index across adulthood and the development of airflow obstruction and emphysema.

Background: Low body mass index (BMI) is associated with COPD, but temporal relationships between airflow obstruction (AO) development and emphysematous change are unclear. We investigated longitudinal changes in BMI, AO, and lung density throughout adulthood using data from the Framingham Offspring Cohort (FOC).

Methods: BMI trajectories were modelled throughout adulthood in 4587 FOC participants from Exam 2 (mean age = 44), through Exam 9 (mean age = 71), in AO participants and non-AO participants (AO = 1036), determined by spirometry, using fractional polynomial growth curves.

Bringing Together a Transdisciplinary Team to Create and Advance a Shared Vision for Research and Support for Siblings of Youth With Cancer.

Siblings of youth with cancer are at risk for psychosocial difficulties and report unmet needs. Supporting siblings is a psychosocial standard of care; however, many barriers prevent this standard from being fully achieved. Transdisciplinary team science has potential to generate novel, real-world solutions to complex research problems and can be beneficial to addressing sibling needs within pediatric hematology/oncology nursing.

Moving Beyond the Social Determinants of Health.

Academic interest in the social determinants of health has grown substantially in the past quarter century. In the past decade this academic engagement has been followed by greater public engagement with the conditions where we live, work, and play and how they affect our health. This moment of greater engagement with social determinants presents an opportunity for us to think about the determination of health more broadly, to look to a future beyond the social determinants.

Effects of Hearing Loss on Interaural Time Difference Sensitivity at Low and High Frequencies.

While many studies have reported a loss of sensitivity to interaural time differences (ITDs) carried in the fine structure of low-frequency signals for listeners with hearing loss, relatively few data are available on the perception of ITDs carried in the envelope of high-frequency signals in this population. The relevant studies found stronger effects of hearing loss at high frequencies than at low frequencies in most cases, but small subject numbers and several confounding effects prevented strong conclusions from being drawn. In the present study, we revisited this question while addressing some of the issues identified in previous studies.

Creating a Welcoming Surgery Residency Training Program for LGBTQ Trainees.

General Surgery residencies have been perceived as unwelcoming to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) applicants. Historically, applicants have been reluctant to reveal their LGBTQ status when interviewing for residency positions and LGBTQ surgery residents are more likely to consider leaving their residency. Despite the increased acceptance in society and calls for diversity by governing bodies, there is a perception that the field of surgery is lagging behind.

Religiosity and Social Support Predict Resilience in Older Adults After a Flood.

In this study, we examined religiosity and social support as predictors of resilience after a devastating flood. Three flood exposure groups of primarily middle-aged and older adults were compared: (1) non-flooded adults as controls, (2) once-flooded adults with structural damage to homes and property in the 2016 flood, and (3) twice-flooded adults who had relocated inland because of prior catastrophic losses in the 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and then flooded again in 2016. Resilience was assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC).

The Effects of Uncertainty in Level on Speech-on-Speech Masking.

Identification of speech from a "target" talker was measured in a speech-on-speech masking task with two simultaneous "masker" talkers. The overall level of each talker was either fixed or randomized throughout each stimulus presentation to investigate the effectiveness of level as a cue for segregating competing talkers and attending to the target. Experimental manipulations included varying the level difference between talkers and imposing three types of target level uncertainty: 1) fixed target level across trials, 2) random target level across trials, or 3) random target levels on a word-by-word basis within a trial.

Experiences and practices of caregiving for older persons living with dementia in African countries: A qualitative scoping review.

Background: The increasing awareness and diagnosis of dementia in Africa necessitate documentation of caregiving practices to understand local patterns and improve the quality of care. Caregiving in African communities is rooted in informal-communal social organization. This scoping review analyses caregiver characteristics and experiences, and practices of caregiving for persons living with dementia in Africa.

Widening Socioeconomic Disparities in Pain and Physical Function Among Americans Are Linked with Growing Obesity.

We investigate whether obesity accounts for widening socioeconomic disparities in pain. Based on nationally representative samples of Americans aged 25-74 in 1995-1996 and 2011-2014, we use logistic regression to model period change in headaches, backaches, and joint aches as well as physical limitations and to determine whether those changes vary by a multidimensional measure of socioeconomic status. Prevalence of backaches, joint aches, physical limitations, and obesity increased between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s, particularly among more disadvantaged Americans.

Epistemic Vigilance in Early Ontogeny: Children's Use of Nonverbal Behavior to Detect Deception.

This study examines the development of children's ability to modulate their trust in verbal testimony as a function of nonverbal behavior. Participants included 83 children (26 four-year-olds, 29 five-year-olds, and 28 six-year-olds) that were tasked with locating a toy hidden in one of two boxes. Before deciding the location, participants watched a video of an adult providing verbal and nonverbal cues about the location of the toy.

Enhanced Recovery Programs for Colorectal Surgery and Postoperative Acute Kidney Injury: Results From a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

Background: Enhanced recovery programs (ERPs) for colorectal surgery bundle evidence-based measures to reduce complications, accelerate postoperative recovery, and improve the value of perioperative health care. Despite these successes, several recent studies have identified an association between ERPs and postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the association between ERPs for colorectal surgery and postoperative AKI.

Diagnostic Imaging Modalities to Assess Treatment Response of Bone Metastasis in Patients Receiving Palliative Radiotherapy: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

Purpose: Several studies have used objective radiologic data to assess the effect of palliative radiotherapy on tumor burden. The purpose of this literature review was to survey the various metrics that have been used to quantify bone tumor response to palliative radiotherapy by radiographical means and to determine whether any of these metrics were associated with clinical palliative outcomes.

Methods: In accordance with PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines, a literature search Ovid Medline and OldMedline from 1946 to February 6, 2019, Embase Classic/Embase from 1947 to 2019 week 5, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials February 2019 to extract articles related to quantified radiologic evaluation of bone metastases following palliative radiotherapy.
