An α-Fe(2)O(3) nanoflake urchin-like structure is formed via the thermal oxidation of micrometre-sized iron spheres in air at temperatures of 300-400 °C. The material consists of α-Fe(2)O(3) nanoflakes grown perpendicularly to the sphere surface, a layer of a mixture of α-Fe(2)O(3) and Fe(3)O(4) as the oxidation shell, and an iron core. The ranges of the tip diameters of the nanoflakes are 20-30 nm (300 °C), 30-50 nm (350 °C), and 60-100 nm (400 °C).

Three blending methods were introduced to combine a biodegradable cationic- polyurethane (PUg3) and polyethylenimine (PEI) together with DNA by different mixing sequences. Results of gel electrophoresis assays and particle size measurements show that complexes prepared by method 1 and 3 bear an ability to condense DNA into small nanoparticles. On the contrary, the use of method 2 in making complexes produces significantly large particles because of the weaker interaction with DNA and lack of DNA condensation.

This study uses panel regression tests to examine the response of hotel performance to international tourism development and crisis events in Taiwan. Hotel performance measures are revenue (revenue per available room and occupancy rate), profitability (return on assets and return on equity) and stock performance. The crises were the earthquake on September 21, 1999 (the 9/21 earthquake), the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the US (the 9/11 terrorist attacks) and the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome on April 22, 2003 (the SARS outbreak).

To improve the cytotoxicity of PEI25k and the transfection efficiency of poly(beta-amino ester) with DNA, we synthesized a poly(beta-amino ester), PEDP, bearing ester linkages in the backbone and tertiary amines in the backbone and side chain and prepared a binary mixture, PEDP-PEI25k, using physical blending meyhod. Both poly(beta-amino ester) PEDP and binary mixture PEDP-PEI25k, readily self-assembled with plasmid DNA (pCMV-beta gal) in a HEPES buffer, were characterized by dynamic light scattering. The results reveal that PEDP-PEI25k was able to self-assemble plasmid DNA into PEDP-PEI25k/DNA nano-complexes small enough to enter a cell through endocytosis.

This study was conducted with column experiments, batch experiments, and bench-scale permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for monitoring the PRB in the relation between BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and p-xylene) decomposition efficiency and the distribution of a microbial community. To obtain the greatest amount of dissolved oxygen from oxygen-releasing compounds (ORCs), 20-d column tests were conducted, the results of which showed that the highest average amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) of 5.08 mg l(-1) (0.

Depending on the duration of exposure to supraphysiological temperatures, cellular proteins and organelles can suffer from structural alternations and irreversible denaturation, which may induce cell death. The thermotolerance of three human urinary bladder carcinoma cell lines, TSGH-8301, J82 and TCC-SUP (cytological grade 2, 3 and 4, respectively), was investigated in the present study. A home-made heating stage was used to provide a constant temperature for different cell lines of bladder carcinoma.

Polyurethanes (PUs) are a class of biodegradable polymers that have been applied as tissue-engineering materials with minimum toxicity. In our study, a new series of cationic PUs containing tertiary amines in the backbone and primary, secondary and tertiary amines in the side chains (PU1, PU2 and PU3, respectively) was synthesized and used as nonviral vectors for gene delivery. In addition, we introduced glycidol into the structure of PU for greater solubility and biocompatibility and grafted various amines in the side chains (PUg1, PUg2, PUg3).

Recent fMRI studies comparing the processing of alphabetic versus logographic scripts provide evidence for shared and orthography-specific regions of neural activity. The present study used near-infrared spectroscopy to compare (within and across brain regions) the time course of neural activation for these two distinct orthographies. Native readers of English and of Chinese were tested on a homophone judgment task.

alpha(1)-Antitrypsin (AT) is a major proteinase inhibitor within the lung. The Z variant of AT (E342K) polymerizes within the liver and lung, resulting in hepatic aggregation of AT and tissue deficiency, predisposing to early onset of cirrhosis and emphysema, respectively. Polymerization of the aberrant protein can be prevented in vitro by specific peptides such as FLEAIG.
