In Nature, bacterial clustering by host-released peptides or nucleic acids is an evolutionarily conserved immune defense strategy employed to prevent adhesion of pathogenic microbes, which is prerequisite for most infections. Synthetic anti-adhesion strategies present as non-lethal means of targeting bacteria and may potentially be used to avoid resistance against antimicrobial therapies. From bacteria-agglutinating biomolecules discovered in nature to synthetic designs involving peptides, cationic polymers and nanoparticles, the modes of actions appear broad and unconsolidated.

Background: The processes that shape microbial biogeography are not well understood, and concepts that apply to macroorganisms, like dispersal barriers, may not affect microorganisms in the same predictable ways. To better understand how known macro-scale biogeographic processes can be applied at micro-scales, we examined seagrass associated microbiota on either side of Wallace's line to determine the influence of this cryptic dispersal boundary on the community structure of microorganisms. Communities were examined from twelve locations throughout Indonesia on either side of this theoretical line.

Moiré-pattern-based potential engineering has become an important way to explore exotic physics in a variety of two-dimensional condensed matter systems. While these potentials have induced correlated phenomena in almost all commonly studied 2D materials, monolayer graphene has remained an exception. We demonstrate theoretically that a single layer of graphene, when placed between two bulk boron nitride crystal substrates with the appropriate twist angles, can support a robust topological ultraflat band emerging as the second hole band.

Background matching, for instance, is a well-known, effective camouflage strategy where the colour and pattern of a stationary animal match its surrounding background. Background: Currently available anti-leukemia drugs have shown limited success in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) due to their poor access to bone marrow niche supporting leukemic cell proliferation.
Results: Herein, we report a bone marrow-targetable green tea catechin-based micellar nanocomplex for synergistic AML therapy. The nanocomplex was found to synergistically amplify the anti-leukemic potency of sorafenib via selective disruption of pro-survival mTOR signaling.

We introduce a computationally efficient method based on the path integral formalism to describe defect-modified graphene. By taking into account the entire Brillouin zone, our approach respects the lattice symmetry and can be used to investigate both short-range and long-range effects. The proposed method's key advantage is that the computational complexity does not increase with the system size, scaling, instead, with the number of defects.

The ability to create a robust and well-defined artificial atomic charge in graphene and understand its carrier-dependent electronic properties represents an important goal toward the development of graphene-based quantum devices. Herein, we devise a new pathway toward the atomically precise embodiment of point charges into a graphene lattice by posterior (N) ion implantation into a back-gated graphene device. Using the floristic composition of 1215 early successional forests (≤20 years) in 75 human-modified landscapes across the Neotropic realm, we identified 14 distinct floristic groups, with a between-group dissimilarity of 0.97. Floristic groups were associated with location, bioregions, soil pH, temperature seasonality, and water availability.

However, the application of EGCG has been limited by its rapid autoxidation at physiological pH, which generates cytotoxic levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We report that monoelemental black phosphorus presents a new electronic self-passivation scheme of single vacancy (SV). By means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy, we demonstrate that the local reconstruction and ionization of SV into negatively charged SV^{-} leads to the passivation of dangling bonds and, thus, the quenching of in-gap states, which can be achieved by mild thermal annealing or STM tip manipulation. SV exhibits a strong and symmetric Friedel oscillation (FO) pattern, while SV^{-} shows an asymmetric FO pattern with local perturbation amplitude reduced by one order of magnitude and a faster decay rate.

Electronic transport in the regime where carrier-carrier collisions are the dominant scattering mechanism has taken on new relevance with the advent of ultraclean two-dimensional materials. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental study of ambipolar hydrodynamic transport in bilayer graphene demonstrating that the conductivity is given by the sum of two Drude-like terms that describe relative motion between electrons and holes, and the collective motion of the electron-hole plasma. As predicted, the measured conductivity of gapless, charge-neutral bilayer graphene is sample- and temperature-independent over a wide range.
