Objective: To assess the effects of seawater immersion of open abdominal wound and drowning on plasma electrolyte levels in dogs.
Methods: Twenty-one dogs with open abdominal wounds were randomly divided into 3 groups, namely the control group (n=7), seawater immersion group (n=7) and seawater immersion and drowning group (n=7). The dogs in the control group were subjected to simple open abdominal wound, and those in the latter two groups were immersed into seawater after the abdominal injury.

Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of single-dose systemic and local injection of methotrexate (MTX) in the treatment of tubal pregnancy (TP).
Methods: The systemic group included 127 women with TP who received a single-dose MTX of 50 mg/m(2) given by intramuscular injection, and the local group included 118 women receiving single-dose MTX of 100 mg via local injection guided by three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound. The volume of ectopic masses and blood beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-HCG) were measured before and after MTX administration.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical effect of preventing gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and aspiration in neonates delivered by elective cesarean section with hand immediately after birth.
Methods: On the basis of the principles for drowning resuscitation and evaluation of the principal factors causing GER and aspiration, the author adopted immediate manual management to promote emptying of gastroesophageal and airway contents in 496 newborns delivered by elective cesarean section.
Results: No GER and aspiration occurred in the babies receiving the management, and no complication was recorded.

Objective: To review our experience in surgical treatment of 326 cases of thoracic esophageal carcinoma.
Methods: The clinical data of 326 patients with thoracic esophageal carcinoma from January 1990 to January 2001 were analyzed retrospectively. Among the 326 patients, the lesions of 32 patients were identified in the upper thoracic segment of the esophagus, and were found in the middle segment in 213 cases with the left 81 cases having lesions in the lower segment.

Methods: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to examine sTNFR-p55 levels in the serum and ascitic fluid in 25 patients with HCC and 25 with liver cirrhosis (LC).
