Alterations in metabolic parameters have been associated with an increased risk of dementia, among which thyroid function has gained great importance in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology in recent years. However, it remains unclear whether thyroid dysfunctions could influence and contribute to the beginning and/or progression of AD or if it results from AD. This systematic review was conducted to examine the association between thyroid hormone (TH) levels and AD.

Aquaculture production has increased in the last decades, with crustacean production contributing with 9.8% of the total production. However, fisheries and aquaculture sectors present several challenges, such as fish stocks fished beyond biological sustainability, animal diseases, biosecurity, and environmental impact.

Overweight and obesity are accompanied by insulin resistance, impaired intestinal barrier function resulting in increased lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels, and a low-grade chronic inflammation that results in macrophage activation. Macrophages produce a range of interleukins as well as prostaglandin E (PGE). To cope with insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia develops.

Extensive literature regarding the health side effects of ambient pollutants (AP) are available, such as diesel exhaust particles (DEPs), but limited studies are available on their electrophilic contaminant 1,2-Naphthoquinone (1,2-NQ), enzymatically derived from naphthalene. This review summarizes relevant toxicologic and biological properties of 1,2-NQ as an environmental pollutant or to a lesser degree as a backbone in drug development to treat infectious diseases. It presents evidence of 1,2-NQ-mediated genotoxicity, neurogenic inflammation, and cytotoxicity due to several mechanistic properties, including the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), that promote cell damage, carcinogenesis, and cell death.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) frequently coexists with congestive heart failure (CHF). The increased susceptibility to AF in CHF has been attributed to a variety of structural and electrophysiological changes in the atria, particularly dilation and interstitial fibrosis. We evaluated atrial remodeling and AF vulnerability in a rat model of CHF induced by left ventricle (LV) radiofrequency (RF) ablation.

This study aimed to assess the bioaccumulation of Pb and induction of metallothionein-like proteins (MT) in Callinectes danae through single and combined dietary and waterborne exposures. Male C. danae individuals were collected in the south area of the Cananéia-Iguape-Peruíbe Protected Area (APA-CIP), in São Paulo State, Brazil.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM), a highly aggressive brain tumor, contains a subpopulation of glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs) that play roles in tumor maintenance, invasion, and therapeutic resistance. GSCs are therefore a promising target for GBM treatment. Our group identified the cellular prion protein (PrP) and its partner, the co-chaperone Hsp70/90 organizing protein (HOP), as potential target candidates due to their role in GBM tumorigenesis and in neural stem cell maintenance.

Cancer cachexia, of which the most notable symptom is severe and rapid weight loss, is present in the majority of patients with advanced cancer. Inflammatory mediators play an important role in the development of cachexia, envisaged as a chronic inflammatory syndrome. The white adipose tissue (WAT) is one of the first compartments affected in cancer cachexia and suffers a high rate of lipolysis.

Odontoblasts are tall columnar cells located at the periphery of the dental pulp. They derive from ectomesenchymal cells originated by migration of neural crest cells during the early craniofacial development. Odontoblasts form the dentine, a collagen-based mineralized tissue, through secretion of its collagenous and noncollagenous organic matrix components and by control the mineralization process.

Fencamfamine (FCF) is an indirect dopamine agent with effects similar to amphetamine and cocaine. In the present study, we investigate changes in Na,K-ATPase, cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity and cyclic GMP levels in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and striatum (ST) of animals acutely or repeatedly treated with FCF (3.5 mg/kg).

Background: We recently demonstrated that aldose reductase inhibition was effective in restoring the reduced migratory capacity of leukocytes in diabetic rats. To investigate the mechanism(s) involved in the restoring effect, we used minalrestat, an aldose reductase inhibitor.
Methods: In sodium pentobarbital-anesthetized (40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) alloxan-diabetic or galactosemic male Wistar rats, the internal spermatic fascia was exteriorized, and the number of leukocytes rolling along the venular endothelium and the number of leukocytes sticking to the vascular wall after topical application of zymosan-activated plasma or leukotriene B(4) (1 ng/ml), as well as after the application of a local irritant stimulus (carrageenan, 100 microg), were determined using intravital microscopy.
