Management of acute corneal hydrops - Current perspectives.

Acute corneal hydrops (ACH) is a rare but sight-threatening complication of corneal ectasias. We aim to review the current literature on etiopathogenesis, histology, role of ancillary investigations, management, and outcomes of ACH by classifying the various management strategies based on their site of action and the underlying mechanism. A review of the literature was conducted by searching the following databases: PubMed (United States National Library of Medicine), Embase (Reed Elsevier Properties SA), Web of Science (Thomson Reuters), and Scopus (Elsevier BV) till April 2023.

Clinical profile and microbiological spectrum of patients with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis at a tertiary care center.

Background: We present risk factors, clinical profile, and microbiological spectrum of patients with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)-associated peritonitis who were managed at our center.

Methods: All consecutive patients with CAPD-associated peritonitis who presented to our center between July 2018 and December 2019 were included in the study. Risk factors, microbiological spectrum, clinical profile, and outcome of patients were studied.

A Rare Combination of Heptadactyl and Hexadactyl Polydactyly in a Neonate.

Heptadactyly and hexadactyly are rare congenital disorders from the polydactyly family. This type of polydactyly is usually classified into three major groups: preaxial (medial ray), postaxial (lateral ray), and central polydactyly. The most common presentation is both preaxial and postaxial polydactyly.

Iron deficiency in patients of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

Background: Heart Failure with reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF) is a common disorder affecting a large population. Iron deficiency (ID) with and without anaemia is an important variable which is often underreported and under treated in clinical practice, which contributes to patient symptoms. The present study was undertaken to study the prevalence and Spectrum of Iron Deficiency in patients of HFrEF.

Single-cell sequencing: A cutting edge tool in molecular medical research.

The rapid development of advanced high throughput technologies and introduction of high resolution "omics" data through analysis of biological molecules has revamped medical research. Single-cell sequencing in recent years, is in fact revolutionising the field by providing a deeper, spatio-temporal analyses of individual cells within tissues and their relevance to disease. Like conventional sequencing, the single-cell approach deciphers the sequence of nucleotides in a given Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid (DNA), Ribose Nucleic Acid (RNA), Micro Ribose Nucleic Acid (miRNA), epigenetically modified DNA or chromatin DNA; however, the unit of analyses is changed to single cells rather than the entire tissue.

Background: Alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS) is a major problem in India. ADS is known to be a systemic disorder involving almost all organ-systems. The evaluation of ADS patients' needs successive assessment of severity of clinical condition.

Awareness regarding foot self-care practices among diabetic patients in Northeast part of India. Can primary care physician make a difference? A hospital based cross-sectional study.

Background: About 10% of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at the time of diagnosis have more than one risk factor for developing foot ulceration, and it increases to 15% in a lifetime. The risk of development of Diabetic foot ulcers/gangrene can be prevented by the patient's self-foot care practice at home. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of awareness of self-foot care practice among diabetic patients in a rural setting.

Assessment of early morning serum cortisol levels in adult male patients with alcohol-related disorders.

Background: Alcohol-related disorders are a major health problem among Indian male professionals because of the unique nature of socioeconomic and demographic conditions. Various studies have highlighted the association between alcohol-related disorders and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction, but the evidence accrued so far is inconclusive. In our study, we have assessed early morning serum total cortisol concentration among Indian adult male population affected with alcohol-related disorder.

The Spectrum of Chromosomal Abnormalities and Endocrine Profile of Male Infertility with Nonobstructive Semen Abnormality: A Case-Control Study.

Background: Primary infertility is a common occurrence which affects approximately 15% of couples who desire to begin their family. Chromosomal abnormalities are well-established causes of pregnancy loss but may also have a role in explaining the cause of male infertility, especially with nonobstructive semen abnormalities. Hence, awareness regarding safety of artificial reproductive technology in these individuals due to underlying sperm aneuploidy is required.

Intracranial Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor: A Review of 49 cases.

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor (IMT) is a rare pathologic entity that was first described in 1973. This lesion is most commonly found in the lungs, but other organs' involvement has also been reported. Intracranial location of Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor is rare, and the first case was reported in 1980.

COVID-19 pandemic-Environmental perspective of COVID-19 and a primer for all of us.

Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) spread worldwide has created a global pandemic. To reduce the transmission of the virus, the Indian government had imposed a countrywide lockdown on 24 Mar 2020 by suspending all public transport and industries temporarily resulting in loss of jobs in multiple sectors and looming threats to the nation economy. Lockdown on the opposite hand has removed pollutants from the air and thus improved air quality in many cities across the globe.

Study of EGFR mutations in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

Introduction: Squamous carcinoma is the commonest malignancy of the head and neck region. It is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) regulates downstream signaling pathways through its tyrosine kinase (TK) domains that play a role in cell proliferation and survival.

Microbiology of bile in extrahepatic biliary obstruction: A tropical experience.

Purpose: Bile is considered sterile, but in obstructed biliary system, growth of micro-organisms results in bacteraemia and toxaemia. We analysed bacterial profile of patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and evaluated antibiotic resistance patterns to formulate strategy for antibiotics in patients undergoing ERCP.

Materials And Methods: Patients with cholestasis who underwent ERCP were enrolled.

Introduction: Osteosynthesis by plate fixation of humeral shaft fractures as a gold standard for fracture fixation has been proven beyond doubt. However, during conventional anterolateral plating Radial nerve injury may occur which can be avoided by applying plate on the medial flat surface. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of application of plate on the flat medial surface of humerus rather than the conventional anterolateral surface.

Post-mortem findings in acute infective endocarditis.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a microbial infection of the heart valves or the mural endocardium that leads to the formation of vegetations composed of thrombotic debris and microorganisms often associated with the destruction of the cardiac tissues. Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected people globally by causing psychological, social, and economic chaos. The Assam Police, India started telephone helplines to address the psychological issues.

Aims: To evaluate the sociodemographic profile of the distress callers, their psychosocial concerns, the interventions provided by the service provider, and whether the service users were satisfied with the intervention(s) or not.

Characteristics of Empty Follicular Syndrome during Fertilization Embryo Transfer and its Association with Various Etiologies in Comparatively Young Patients.

Background: Nearly 0.6%-7% of patients undergoing fertilization embryo transfer (IVF ET) will not be able to yield any oocyte despite successful ovarian stimulation and this condition is called as empty follicular syndrome (EFS). EFS is a dreadful situation for clinicians as well as patients, seems to be an unavoidable clinical condition despite a proper ovarian stimulation.

Rare Presentation of Subacromial Bursitis Mimics Neoplasm in a Case of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Introduction: We report a rare case of massive subacromial bursitis in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patient. A solid tumor was initially suspected because it was very large with no apparent local sign of inflammation or infection in a 69-year-old patient. Isolated subacromial bursa is an uncommon and it is usually small in size.

Can self-perceived easy fatigability be a predictor of vitamin D deficiency in young Indian women?

Background: Easy fatigability is a common presenting complaint in Indian women who visited primary care hospitals. Many medical conditions like cancer, chronic bronchial asthma, prolonged use of glucocorticosteroid, renal disorder, and hypothyroidism have been associated with low levels of vitamin D. Correction of vitamin D level improves the symptom of fatigue.

Prevalence of childhood depression in school going adolescents in an urban Indian school.

Background: Understanding the prevalence of a psychiatric disorder among children is essential for formulating sound public health policy.

Aim: This study is aimed to estimate the prevalence of depression in urban school-going adolescents and its association with age, sex, and birth order.

Materials And Methods: A total of 500 participants in the age group 12-16 years from a working-class community, studying in an urban school, were selected for the study.
