Sensitivity and specificity of the sensory collapse test for nerve entrapment syndrome in the upper extremity.

Hand Surg Rehabil

October 2024

Chirurgie de la Main - Chirurgie Plastique Réparatrice des Membres, Hôpital de la Timone, 264 Rue Saint-Pierre, 13005 Marseille, France.

Objectives: Several prospective blinded studies have found poorer sensitivity for the sensory collapse test than reported by Susan E Mackinnon's team. However, the blinded examiner had no knowledge of the patient's clinical presentation, or even of the purpose of the test. In these conditions, it seems difficult to perform the sensory collapse test correctly.

The USDA Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) is a federal estimate of a healthy diet at lowest cost for US population groups defined by gender and age. The present goal was to develop a version of the TFP that was more tailored to the observed dietary patterns of self-identified Hispanic participants in NHANES 2013-16. Analyses used the same national food prices and nutrient composition data as the TFP 2021.

Hôpitaux de l'est parisien (Saint-Antoine-Tenon), AP-HP, Sorbonne Université, Inserm ICAN 1166, 184, Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, 75571 Paris cedex 12, France.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the primary cause of ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA). AF is associated with a high risk of recurrence, which can be reduced using optimal prevention strategies, mainly anticoagulant therapy. The availability of effective prophylaxis justifies the need for a significant, coordinated and thorough transdisciplinary effort to screen for AF associated with stroke.

September 2024

Center for Immunology of Viral, Auto-Immune, Hematological and Viral Diseases (IMVA-HB/IDMIT), Université Paris-Saclay, Inserm, CEA, 92265, Fontenay aux Roses, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Early pregnancy Zika virus (ZIKV) infection can cause serious brain damage in fetuses, resulting in conditions like microcephaly, though the exact mechanisms of this damage are still not fully understood.
  • A study using cynomolgus macaque fetuses showed that ZIKV was transmitted from infected fetuses to their mothers, leading to detectable viral levels in blood, brain, and placenta, along with signs of brain size reduction in the infected fetuses.
  • Despite persistent viral genetic material in tissues, the immune response helped clear much of the virus before the delivery, indicating that while short-term brain injury occurs, the body can partially control the infection.

Purpose: Globally, colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most prevalent cancers. One distinctive feature of colorectal cancer is its close relationship to the gut microbiota, which is a crucial component of the tumor microenvironment. Over the last ten years, research has demonstrated that colorectal cancer is accompanied with dysbiosis of gut bacteria, fungi, viruses, and Archaea, and that these alterations may be causal.

September 2024

Laboratório de Química Bioinorgânica e Catalise, Departamento Química, Instituto de Ciências Exatas, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais 36036-900, Brazil.

To ascertain the bioinorganic chemistry of metals conjugated with quinones, the complexes [Ag(ATV)(PPh)] (), [Au(ATV)(PPh)]·2HO (), and [Cu(ATV)(PPh)] () were synthesized by the coordination of the antimalarial naphthoquinone atovaquone (ATV) to the starting materials [Ag(PPh]NO, [Au(PPh)Cl], and [Cu(PPh)NO], respectively. These complexes were characterized by analytical and spectroscopical techniques. X-ray diffraction of single crystals precisely confirmed the coordination mode of ATV to the metals, which was monodentate or bidentate, depending on the metal center.

A simple N-heterocyclic carbene for the catalytic up-conversion of aldehydes into stoichiometric super electron donors.

Chem Sci

August 2024

Aix Marseille Univ, CNRS, ICR, Institut de Chimie Radicalaire, Faculté de Pharmacie 13005 Marseille France

Catalytic amounts of 1,3-di(methyl)imidazole-2-ylidene, one of the simplest and most prototypical N-heterocyclic carbenes, can up-convert aldehydes into powerful stoichiometric sources of electrons (Super Electron Donors) for reductive transformations of iodoaryls ( < -2 V). In particular, the hydroarylation of 1,1'-diarylethylenes, which may require high temperatures and inherently generate stoichiometric amounts of oxidized waste, was performed at room temperature, with the concomitant formation of esters as oxidized co-products.

Clathrin-mediated endocytosis has characteristic features in neuronal dendrites and presynapses, but how membrane proteins are internalized along the axon shaft remains unclear. We focused on clathrin-coated structures and endocytosis along the axon initial segment (AIS) and their relationship to the periodic actin-spectrin scaffold that lines the axonal plasma membrane. A combination of super-resolution microscopy and platinum-replica electron microscopy on cultured neurons revealed that AIS clathrin-coated pits form within "clearings", circular areas devoid of actin-spectrin mesh.
