Europace

November 2024

Department of Cardiology, IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano, Faint & Fall Research Centre, San Luca Hospital, Milan, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Carotid sinus massage (CSM) is crucial for diagnosing unexplained syncope in patients over 40, yet there's significant variability in how it's performed, impacting test outcomes.
  • Despite being used for over a century, many healthcare providers lack a standardized approach, leading to inconsistent practices and possibly incorrect diagnoses.
  • The proposed "Six Step Method" aims to provide a uniform CSM procedure, detailing necessary equipment and protocols for optimal patient safety and accurate results.

Article Synopsis
  • Newborn care guidelines suggest follow-up assessments within a week after discharge, but this study focuses on the impact of early follow-up visits (EFVs) within three days and their link to neonatal hospital readmission.
  • Researchers analyzed data from the French National Health Care Database, involving healthy infants born in Southern France, and found that 2.25% were hospitalized, mainly due to infections and jaundice.
  • The study concluded that infants with EFVs had a 13% lower chance of being rehospitalized, suggesting that these visits should be prioritized to enhance infant health and reduce healthcare expenses.

Gamma aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABARs) play a key role in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) as drivers of neuroinhibitory circuits, which are commonly targeted for therapeutic purposes with potentiator drugs. However, due to their widespread expression and strong inhibitory action, systemic pharmaceutical potentiation of GABARs inevitably causes adverse effects regardless of the drug selectivity. Therefore, therapeutic guidelines must often limit or exclude clinically available GABAR potentiators, despite their high efficacy, good biodistribution, and favorable molecular properties.

  • Recovery Colleges (RCs) are special communities that help people recover from mental health issues through learning, but their success in different cultures is not well studied.
  • Researchers looked at 169 RCs from various countries to see how cultural differences affect how well they operate.
  • They found that RCs work best in cultures that are more individualistic and indulgent, but it's important to consider other cultures to make these programs better for everyone around the world.

Recommendations of an expert group for the cardiac assessment of non-dystrophic myotonia adult patients treated with mexiletine.

Neuromuscul Disord

November 2024

Cardiology Department, CHU de Caen, UR 4650 Unicaen, Avenue de la Côte de Nacre CS 30001, 14033 Caen France.

Mexiletine (NaMuscla™) is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of myotonia in adults with non-dystrophic myotonia. A cardiac assessment is required as mexiletine may have a pro-arrhythmic effect. Long-term safety data supporting the use of mexiletine in patients with non-dystrophic myotonia combined with the extensive clinical experience of an expert group resulted in creation of an algorithm for cardiac monitoring of patients treated with mexiletine.

Article Synopsis
  • BLA neurons actively respond to emotionally significant stimuli and their activity changes with training during reward-seeking tasks under uncertainty.
  • As the rats learned the association between cues and rewards, BLA neurons showed sustained activity that correlated with behavior, indicating that they play a critical role in processing cues related to rewards.
  • Inactivation of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) affected BLA activity and reduced the motivation for reward seeking, suggesting that BLA's cue-driven activity is influenced by cortical input and is essential for ongoing reward-seeking behavior.

Objective: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains the gold standard for diagnosing tumoral joint involvement; however, its interpretation remains uncertain due to the presence of perilesional edema that can lead to unjustified arthrectomy. The aim of the study is to identify precise MRI signs that are predictive of joint involvement.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included 25 patients who underwent extra-articular resection for malignant bone tumor with suspected joint involvement at the shoulder, hip, or knee, between January 2004 and July 2023.

Oral Cavity Cancer Secondary to Dental Trauma: A Scoping Review.

Biomedicines

September 2024

Head & Neck Section-Research Committee of Young Otolaryngologists of the International Federation of Otorhinolaryngological Societies (IFOS), 13005 Marseille, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral cavity cancer (OCC) is the most common type of head and neck cancer, with limited studies suggesting that chronic irritation from factors like poor dental hygiene and ill-fitting dentures may contribute to its development, especially in non-smokers and non-drinkers.
  • This scoping review analyzed existing research from several databases to assess the relationship between dental trauma and OCC, following established guidelines for systematic reviews.
  • Results indicate a potential link between chronic dental trauma and OCC, particularly highlighting the risks associated with dentures and poor oral hygiene, while also noting a lack of data on the impact of gender and the specific vulnerability of women without smoking or drinking habits.

Infrared neuroglial modulation of spinal locomotor networks.

Sci Rep

September 2024

Mines Saint-Etienne, Centre CMP, Département BEL, 13541, Gardanne, France.

Infrared neural stimulation (INS) emerges as a promising tool for stimulating the nervous system by its high spatial precision and absence of the use of exogenous agents into the tissue, which led to the first successful proof of concept in human brain. While neural networks have been the focal point of INS research, this technique is also non cell type specific as it triggers activity in non electrically excitable cells. Despite increasing interest, there remains to demonstrate well defined simultaneous astrocytic and neuronal signals in response to INS.
