Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the primary cause of ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA). AF is associated with a high risk of recurrence, which can be reduced using optimal prevention strategies, mainly anticoagulant therapy. The availability of effective prophylaxis justifies the need for a significant, coordinated and thorough transdisciplinary effort to screen for AF associated with stroke.

The epileptogenic network concept: Applications in the SEEG exploration of lesional focal epilepsies.

The advent of advanced brain imaging techniques has significantly enhanced the understanding and treatment of focal epilepsies, with identifiable brain lesions present in 80 % of cases. Despite this, surgical outcomes remain varied, often influenced by lesion type and location. Traditional lesion-centric approaches may overlook the complex organization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ), which often extends beyond the visible lesion, emphasizing the need for comprehensive presurgical evaluations like stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) in some cases.

West Nile virus can be transmitted within mosquito populations through infectious mosquito excreta.

Understanding the transmission routes of arboviruses is key to determining their epidemiology. Here, we tested whether West Nile viruses (WNVs) are transmitted through mosquito excreta. First, we observed a high concentration of infectious units per excreta, although viruses were short lived.

Design, synthesis and mechanistic insights into triclosan derived dimers as potential anti-plasmodials.

In pursuit of novel anti-plasmodial agents, a library of triclosan-based dimers both with and without a 1-1,2,3 triazole core were designed and synthesized in order to achieve a multitargeted approach. assessment against chloroquine-susceptible (3D7) and resistant (W2) strains identified that two of the synthesized dimers containing triazole were the most potent in the series. The most potent of the synthesized compounds exhibited IC values of 9.

Impact of non-ionising radiation of male fertility: a systematic review.

Exposure to non-ionizing radiation has become inevitable because people cannot escape sources of electromagnetic fields, such as Wi-Fi or cell phones. Among the mechanisms mentioned, the energy emitted by this non-ionizing radiation could cause heating which would have harmful effects on semen quality. The objective of our study was to carry out a systematic review of the literature concerning the impact of exposure to non-ionizing radiation from mobile phones (or other sources) on sperm parameters.

An Innovative One Health Approach: BIOQUALIM, a Transdisciplinary Research Action Protocol-From Cultivated Biodiversity to Human Health Prevention.

Background/objectives: The "One Health" approach underscores the connection between human, animal, and environmental health, promoting solutions to global challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss. The Planetary Health Diet (PHD) promotes a plant-based diet with organically grown plants to reduce the environmental impact of meat production and decrease the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The BIOQUALIM project will evaluate the PHD's effectiveness in preventing NCDs like periodontal diseases and cancers through four inter-related studies.

Developmental Profile of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Versus Social Communication Disorder: A Pilot Study.

Background: Social Communication Disorder (SCD), introduced in the DSM-5, is distinguished from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by the absence of restricted and repetitive behaviors or interests (RRBIs).

Aim: To compare the adaptive, sensory, communication, and cognitive profiles of children with ASD and SCD.

Methods: The assessments of nine children with SCD and ten with ASD were compared with either Fisher's Exact Test or the Mann-Whitney Test.

Initially, we screened a broad collection of animal venoms for their antiproliferative activity against cancer cell lines. Activity Identification, Classification, and Representation of Wheelchair Sport Court Tasks: A Method Proposal.

Background: Monitoring player mobility in wheelchair sports is crucial for helping coaches understand activity dynamics and optimize training programs. However, the lack of data from monitoring tools, combined with a lack of standardized processing approaches and ineffective data presentation, limits their usability outside of research teams. To address these issues, this study aimed to propose a simple and efficient algorithm for identifying locomotor tasks (static, forward/backward propulsion, pivot/tight/wide rotation) during wheelchair movements, utilizing kinematic data from standard wheelchair mobility tests.

Comparing Different Methods for the Diagnosis of Liver Steatosis: What Are the Best Diagnostic Tools?

Background: Due to the ongoing organ shortage, marginal grafts with steatosis are more frequently used in liver transplantation, leading to higher occurrences of graft dysfunction. A histological analysis is the gold standard for the quantification of liver steatosis (LS), but has its drawbacks: it is an invasive method that varies from one pathologist to another and is not available in every hospital at the time of organ procurement. This study aimed to compare non-invasive diagnostic tools to a histological analysis for the quantification of liver steatosis.

An Expression Quantitative Trait Locus of Fc Gamma Receptor Genes is Associated with Anti-Malarial IgG Responses and Infection Levels in Burkinabe Families.

Background: The interaction between antibodies and Fc gamma receptors (FcγRs) plays a critical role in regulating immune responses to Plasmodium falciparum. Polymorphisms in genes encoding FcγRs influence the host's capacity to control parasite infection. This study investigates whether non-coding variants influencing FcγR expression are associated with anti-malarial immunization and infection traits.

Risk factors and influence of surgical technique on the risk of caesarean scar defect formation: A systematic review of the literature.

Objective: To determine the factors associated with an increased risk of cesarean scar defect formation.

Methods: A systematic literature search was performed up to July 2022 in PubMed databases following the PRISMA recommendations. All available English-language clinical studies presenting one or more factors that may affect the risk of cesarean scar defect were included.

A novel AAV9-dual microRNA-vector targeting in the hippocampus as a treatment for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) is the most prevalent type of epilepsy in adults. First and subsequent generations of anti-epileptic therapy regimens fail to decrease seizures in a large number of patients suffering from mTLE, leaving surgical ablation of part of the hippocampus as the only therapeutic option to potentially reach seizure freedom. GluK2 has recently been identified as a promising target for the treatment of mTLE using gene therapy.

Clinical outcomes for 2788 patients with transthyretin amyloidosis: Tafamidis meglumine early access program in France.

Background: Early access experience in France with tafamidis meglumine, a selective transthyretin stabilizer for transthyretin-related amyloidosis cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM), following transthyretin-related amyloidosis (ATTR) polyneuropathy approval and positive ATTR-ACT study results.

Brain PET Imaging in the Presurgical Evaluation of Drug-Resistant Focal Epilepsy.

Presurgical evaluation aims to localize the seizure onset zone (SOZ) for a tailored resection. Interictal [F]fluorodeoxyglucose PET is now an established test to lateralize and/or localize the SOZ, particularly if MR imaging is negative or if the noninvasive assessment shows discrepancies. PET can show hypometabolic areas associated with SOZ and the potential altered metabolic brain networks.

To address these risks, various harm reduction (HR) policies have been implemented, including drug checking services (DCS). Many analytical methods are used for DCS.

Impact of facial nerve resection in parotid cancer abutting the facial nerve without preoperative paralysis: A multicentric propensity score-based analysis.

Objectives: The management of the facial nerve (FN) is a major issue in parotid cancer, especially when there is no preoperative facial palsy and FN invasion is discovered intraoperatively. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of FN resection in patients with parotid cancer abutting the FN, without pretreatment facial palsy, using a propensity score matching.

Materials And Methods: Data from all patients treated between 2009 and 2020 for a primary parotid cancer abutting or invading the FN but without pretreatment facial palsy were extracted from the national multicentric REFCOR database.

Context: Renin is a marker of blood volume. There is no consensus on the validity of plasma renin measurement for adjusting mineralocorticoid (MC) substitution in patients with primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI).

Discogenic low back pain (LBP) is a significant clinical condition arising from degeneration of the intervertebral disc, a common yet complex cause of chronic pain, defined by fissuring in the annulus fibrosus resulting in vascularization of growing granulation tissue and growth of nociceptive nerve fibers along the laceration area. This paper delves into the anatomical and pathophysiological underpinnings of discogenic LBP, emphasizing the role of intervertebral disc degeneration in the onset of pain. The pathogenesis is multifactorial, involving processes like mitochondrial dysfunction, accumulation of advanced glycation end products, and pyroptosis, all contributing to disc degeneration and subsequent pain.

Diversity of Chemsex Experiences among Men Who Have Sex with Men: Results from the French ANRS PaacX Study Using Q-Methodology.

Chemsex is mostly approached through the prism of risk-taking, neglecting the pleasure and social linking dimensions. However, feedback from the field and few studies highlights a diversity of chemsex practices and relationships to chemsex (RtC). Using Q-methodology, we identified the main RtC and their divergences and convergences, to help develop tailored prevention and care programs.

In Vivo Feasibility of Arterial Embolization with a New Permanent Agar-agar-Based Agent.

Purpose: Evaluate the safety and efficacy of an eco-friendly permanent agar-agar-based embolization agent (ABEA) (EmboBio®) for intra-arterial use.

Materials And Methods: Six pigs embolized with one ABEA torpedo (6 lower polar renal and 6 lumbar arteries) and one coil (6 lower polar renal and 6 lumbar arteries). Technical success was defined as a complete occlusion with no residual flow in DSA.
