Lack of access to birth facilities and maternity care providers has contributed to rising US maternal mortality and morbidity rates, especially among women in rural areas. Evidence supports the increased use of midwives as a potential solution for access-to-care issues. This observational survey was conducted to identify the practice environment for Certified Nurse-Midwives® in Colorado for the purpose of informing future workforce expansion.

The Balint Method has been used worldwide since Michael and Enid Balint developed it in the 1950s. Even with the proliferation of Balint groups there were still doctors and other clinicians who did not have local access. The online format was developed to provide Balint groups to those individuals.

An increasing proportion of new drugs approved for market worldwide are now high cost, specialty medicines. Pharmaceutical marketers face the challenge of convincing payers, prescribers, and patients that the cost and complexity of care associated with specialty medicines is worth the trouble, and now offer patient support programs, free of charge, to patients prescribed their drug. We conducted a secondary, qualitative, interpretive analysis of 24 interviews with leaders of patient groups and members of hospital formulary committees in Australia to describe the work of pharmaceutical company-employed or contracted nurses who provide support to patients prescribed specialty medicines, and to prompt discussion around the policy implications of relying on industry-funded nursing care within publicly funded health systems.

Purpose: The economic downturn due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic initially led to a large increase in the US unemployment rate. Being laid-off or losing a job could cause financial stress and have an impact on the relationship between parents or other adults in the home and children. We aimed to assess the effect of household unemployment on child physical and emotional abuse during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, with an older population of children.

By 2014, the majority of U.S. states had implemented differential response (DR), a system policy that seeks to serve families of low-to moderate-risk for child maltreatment through family engagement, diversion from formal child protective services investigations, and service provision.

Interest in systematic approaches to improving clinical empathy has increased. However, conceptualizations of empathy are inconsistent and difficult to operationalize. Drawing on video recordings of primary care visits with older adults, I describe one particular communication strategy for conveying empathy-empathic validation.

The Society for the Advancement of Transplant Anesthesia (SATA) is dedicated to improving patient care in all facets of transplant anesthesia. The anesthesia fellowship training recommendations for thoracic transplantation (heart and lungs) and part of the abdominal organ transplantation (liver) have been presented in previous publications. The SATA Fellowship Committee has completed the remaining component of abdominal transplant anesthesia (kidney/pancreas) and has assembled core competencies and milestones derived from expert consensus to guide the education and overall preparation of trainees providing care for kidney/pancreas transplant recipients.

Background: Military data demonstrating an improved survival rate with whole blood (WB) have led to a shift toward the use of WB in civilian trauma. The purpose of this study is to compare a low-titer group O WB (LTOWB) massive transfusion protocol (MTP) to conventional blood component therapy (BCT) MTP in civilian trauma patients.
Methods: Trauma patients 15 years or older who had MTP activations from February 2019 to December 2020 were included.

Fatigue is one of the most common debilitating symptoms reported by persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). It reflects feelings of tiredness, lack of energy, low motivation, and difficulty in concentrating. It can be measured at a specific instant in time as a perception that arises from interoceptive networks involved in the regulation of homeostasis.

The aim of this study was to examine the frequency with which child abuse pediatricians (CAPs) assess consultations as low versus high likelihood of abuse. In this retrospective secondary analysis of data from the Examining Siblings to Recognize Abuse (ExSTRA) study, the likelihood of abuse score for 2890 consultations at 20 medical centers was collected. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the percentage of cases representing low versus high likelihood of abuse (i.

It is perhaps surprising that we lack complete national information about why children enter foster care. While the annual Adoption and Foster Care Analysis Reporting System (AFCARS) report is informative, it leaves many questions unanswered, particularly "how many children enter foster care by means other than Child Protective Services (CPS) reports?" Drawing from a unique new integrated dataset, we examined foster care data (AFCARS) and CPS report data (National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System Child File). The linked dataset included 210,062 children with foster care placements in 2017 and no placements in the prior 5 years.

American Indians (AIs) generally consume less alcohol than the US general population; however, the prevalence of alcohol use disorder is higher. This is the first large cohort study to examine binge drinking as a risk factor for vascular brain injury (VBI). We used linear and Poisson regression to examine the association of self-reported binge drinking with VBI, measured via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in 817 older AIs who participated in the Strong Heart and Cerebrovascular Disease and Its Consequences in American Indians studies.

Using statewide administrative data, this study builds on the current state of knowledge to better understand the volume of child protection system (CPS) referrals and responses in Colorado, USA before and during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and to determine whether there were differences in referral and response rates by case characteristics. Results indicated an overall decline in referrals and responses during COVID-19 when compared to the previous year.

Although the mortality from cardiovascular disease has declined, it remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Dyslipidemia is a modifiable risk factor that plays a significant role in the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Treating dyslipidemia by lowering cholesterol, predominately low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, has been shown to reduce cardiovascular events.
