Background: There are hereditary types of nephroblastoma or Wilms' tumor associated with exposure of the germ cells of either parent to harmful environmental factors. Some studies have examined the exposure of compounds used pesticides and herbicides as a risk factor for Wilms' tumor.

Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out on case-control studies to establish the potential link between exposure to these organic molecules and Wilms' tumor occurrence in children rigorously.

Can Assoc Radiol J

May 2023

Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, 8166University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Prior studies on Canadian physicians' income have demonstrated a gender pay gap (GPG); however, there is a paucity of data in the Radiology specialty. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine if practicing Canadian radiologists' self-reported income is related to gender, controlling for demographic and work variables. English and French online surveys were distributed by email and social media to radiologists and trainees (May-July 2021).

Aims: To summarize methods used to account for antihyperglycemic medication changes in randomized controlled trials evaluating the effect of dietary and physical activity interventions on glycemia among adults with diabetes.

Methods: Using studies included in two recently published systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials examining the glycemic effects of dietary and physical activity interventions, we evaluated how each study accounted for antihyperglycemic medication changes. Data were analyzed using summary statistics, stratified by the type of intervention studied, and each was assigned a score from 0 to 6 reflecting the strength of medication controls employed.

Background: Critical care research in Canada is conducted primarily in academically-affiliated intensive care units with established research infrastructure, including research coordinators (RCs). Recently, efforts have been made to engage community hospital ICUs in research albeit with barriers. Automation or artificial intelligence (AI) could aid the performance of routine research tasks.

August 2021

Department of Community Health Sciences and Psychiatry, Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Objectives: The study was designed to estimate the prevalence of mental disorders in a cohort of firefighters who had been deployed to a devastating fire in Fort McMurray, Alberta, in 2016.

Methods: A cohort of firefighters was established and followed up by online questionnaires. The contact in October 2018 to March 2019 included the PCL-5 questionnaire screening for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) screening for anxiety and depression.

Objective: Patients with major depressive disorder often have limited response to first-line and second-line medications; hence, novel pharmacological treatments are needed for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Ketamine, an -methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, has demonstrated rapid antidepressant effects in patients with TRD. The Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) convened a task force to review the evidence for efficacy and safety of racemic ketamine and to provide recommendations for its use in clinical practice.

Buccal Hydromorphone Syrup for Managing Dyspnea in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Am J Hosp Palliat Care

August 2021

Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Department of Medicine, 12357University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Context: Dyspnea is a highly distressing symptom that characterizes idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a common idiopathic interstitial lung disease (ILD) with a high symptom burden, poor quality of life, and early mortality. Though opioids are mentioned in guidelines for dyspnea management, guidance on how and when to initiate opioids is lacking. Different pharmacologic strategies are needed to address different types of dyspnea (baseline, incident, and crisis).

The application of big data, radiomics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in radiology requires access to large data sets containing personal health information. Because machine learning projects often require collaboration between different sites or data transfer to a third party, precautions are required to safeguard patient privacy. Safety measures are required to prevent inadvertent access to and transfer of identifiable information.

Spontaneous Palatal Cleft Closure.

Cleft Palate Craniofac J

May 2021

Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Surgery, 6186University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, OK, USA.

This case report presents a palatal cleft that healed spontaneously, with complete formation of mucosa and bone. Even though the nasal structures could initially be observed through the cleft palate, a thin membrane sealed any communication between the oral and nasal cavities. The origin of this tenuous membrane cannot be fully understood with current discernment of palate formation, but it probably served as a basis for the formation of the other tissues.

Background: Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) comprise a heterogeneous group of fibrotic, progressive pulmonary diseases characterized by poor end-of-life care and hospital deaths. In 2012, we launched our Multidisciplinary Collaborative (MDC) ILD clinic to deliver integrated palliative approach throughout disease trajectory to improve care. We sought to explore the effects of palliative care and other factors on location of death (LOD) of patients with ILD.
