Despite documented benefits of advance care planning (ACP), understandings about the impact of advance directives (AD)-critical steps in the ACP process-remain limited. As a type of AD, living wills (LWs) are often misplaced or forgotten about. This study explores the prevalence of missing LWs among older adults in the U.

This manuscript aimed to examine treatment outcomes of HIV-positive children and adolescents. We retrospectively analyzed data of a sample of patients aged 0-19 years who initiated ART (October 2007-September 2016) in participating sites in 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria. Among 4006 patients alive at the end of the follow up period, 138 (3.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health concern; however, limited studies have explored perceptions and experiences towards IPV among students, staff, administrators, and faculty across diverse disciplines at institutions of higher education. The purposes of this study were to (1) assess experiences of IPV among a sample of students, staff/administrators, and faculty and (2) examine the relationship among attitudes, actual and perceived knowledge, awareness, training, readiness, and personal experiences with IPV in this sample. Participants were recruited from an urban university and two university-affiliated medical institutions to participate in an online survey.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to provide a robust qualitative and quantitative analysis of the different systems used to assess the grade of oral epithelial dysplasia (OED). This study was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyzes (PRISMA) statement. Six electronic databases were searched for primary research published over the past four decades.

As formal crisis responders, police are trained in de-escalation tactics that are expected to mitigate intimate partner violence and promote survivor safety. However, the alignment between expected and actual practice of police intervention varies, especially when the survivor does not initiate the call, police treat the survivor poorly, or provide an undesirable arrest outcome. At best, unsuccessful interventions do not change survivors' risk level, and at worse, elevate their risk of experiencing harm.

Guided by an intersectionality framework, this study examined intersectional discrimination attributions and their associations with health outcomes. Older respondents (aged ≥50) from the Health and Retirement Study in 2014-2015 were included ( = 6286). Their reasons for discrimination (age, gender, sexual orientation, race, national origin, religion, financial status, weight, physical appearance, disability, and others) were examined.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) disproportionately affects marginalized women in the United States. This calls for effective safety planning strategies to reduce the risk for future revictimization and address safety needs of survivors from marginalized groups. This review identified types of interventions that incorporated safety planning and were successful in reducing the risk for future revictimization among IPV survivors from diverse groups, examined elements of safety planning in effective interventions, and described challenges or limitations in safety planning intervention research with marginalized women.

Background: Thyroid ultrasounds extend surgeons' outpatient capabilities and are essential for operative planning. However, most residents are not formally trained in thyroid ultrasound. The purpose of this study was to create a novel thyroid ultrasound proficiency metric through a collaborative Delphi approach.

This study examined differences in physical function, delirium, depressive symptoms, and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in hospitalized African American and white older adults with dementia. This secondary data analysis using baseline data from an ongoing trial testing family-centered function-focused care included African American ( = 159) and white persons ( =135) with dementia. A multivariate analysis of covariance showed that controlling for relevant demographic and health characteristics, African Americans with dementia had lower physical function, more delirium, and more depressive symptoms upon admission than white participants.

Circadian rhythm disturbances are common among children with cancer, and are associated with poor health outcomes. Social zeitgeber theory suggests that intervening in the cascade of events that disrupt circadian rhythms may improve health outcomes. Light, most potently sunlight, is a "zeitgeber," or environmental cue instrumental in maintaining entrainment of circadian rhythms.

We aim to quantify any use and long-term use patterns of psychoactive medications and explore differences in use by sociodemographic factors in older adults (60-85 years) using the 2016 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. Prevalence estimates of any use and long-term use were calculated. Chi-square and crude odds ratios were calculated to estimate differences in any use and long-term use of psychoactive medication by sociodemographic characteristics of respondents.

Pain is a multidimensional symptom frequently experienced by hospice patients that is physical, psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual. Medicare regulations require hospices to complete a psychosocial assessment with content such as patient/family adjustment to illness. Furthermore, pain barriers such as concerns about addiction, and fatalism are recognized impediments to high quality pain management.

Young men of color who have sex with men (yMSM) living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in syndemic environments have been difficult-to-retain in care resulting in their being at-risk for poor health outcomes despite availability of effective once-daily antiretroviral treatment (ART). Multiple methods have been implemented to improve outcomes for this cohort; none with sustainable results. Outpatient HIV staff themselves may be a contributing factor.

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal condition predominantly affecting the female sex, and is characterized by brain-gut axis dysregulation. Relevance of hormones along the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal axis and hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis to IBS symptomatology remain unclear, as does the significance of other modulators including brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), leptin, and transforming growth factor βeta 1 (TGF-β1).
Methods: Females with IBS were compared with female healthy controls (HC) on age, race, hormonal contraceptive use, body mass index, adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, estradiol, follicular stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, progesterone, total cholesterol, Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS).

Background: The Asian American (AA) population is rapidly becoming one of the largest racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Despite this growth and advances in palliative care (PC) programs in the United States, the scope and nature of the literature regarding PC for AAs remains unclear. This review provides an overview of existing research on PC for AAs, identifies gaps in the research with recommendations for future research and delineates practice implications.

About half of kinship families live in poverty, and one third of them receive financial assistance such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and foster care payments. This study selected children who remained in kinship care ( = 267) for three waves from nationally representative data and examined the longitudinal associations among poverty, economic pressure, financial assistance, and children's behavioral health outcomes in kinship care. Results from multilevel mixed-effects generalized linear models indicated that having economic pressure and receiving TANF were associated with increases in kinship children's internalizing and externalizing problems.

Objective: Anemia is common during critical illness and often persists after hospital discharge; however, its potential association with physical outcomes after critical illness is unclear. Our objective was to assess the associations between hemoglobin at intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital discharge with physical status at 3-month follow-up in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) survivors.
Methods: This is a secondary analysis of a multisite prospective cohort study of 195 mechanically ventilated ARDS survivors from 13 ICUs at 4 teaching hospitals in Baltimore, Maryland.
