Maternal separation (MS) in mice results in behavioral deficits and gut microbiota dysbiosis that all persist into adulthood. Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 modulates gut microbiota, alters systemic metabolites, and facilitates immune regulation. To assess the effect of DSM 17938 on biochemical and behavioural stress-associated changes, newborn mice were exposed to unpredictable MS (MSU) daily from day 7 to day 20 of life, with intragastric administration of DSM 17938 or PBS as control.

Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) contributes to significant morbidity in trauma patients while increasing hospital costs and length of stay. Standard trauma prophylaxis dosing with enoxaparin 30 mg twice daily may be inadequate to prevent VTEs. The objective of this study was to compare standard dosing of enoxaparin to an increased dose of enoxaparin 40 mg twice daily for trauma patients.

Management of Renal Artery-Inferior Vena Cava Fistula Following Nephrectomy for Penetrating Trauma.

Renal artery to inferior vena cava fistula is a rare event postnephrectomy. We report a case of an adult male in whom a renal artery to inferior vena cava fistula was detected on non-invasive studies following nephrectomy for penetrating trauma. A fistula between the right renal artery and inferior vena cava was confirmed with diagnostic angiography.

Bag-Mask Ventilation Versus Apneic Oxygenation During Tracheal Intubation in Critically Ill Adults: A Secondary Analysis of 2 Randomized Trials.

Hypoxemia is common during tracheal intubation in intensive care units. To prevent hypoxemia during intubation, 2 methods of delivering oxygen between induction and laryngoscopy have been proposed: bag-mask ventilation and supplemental oxygen delivered by nasal cannula without ventilation (apneic oxygenation). Whether one of these approaches is more effective for preventing hypoxemia during intubation of critically ill patients is unknown.

Introduction: Choroidal rupture is a tear/break within the Bruch's membrane, retinal pigment epithelium and choroid following blunt trauma. Choroidal neovascularization is a well-known complication of traumatic choroidal rupture that is typically treated with intravitreal injections of Bevacizumab. This case describes an early detection of choroidal neovascular complex secondary to traumatic choroidal rupture and its spontaneous regression and quiescence without treatment followed using optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography.

Purpose/background: The role of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for the surgical treatment of diverticular disease is evolving. The aim of this study is to compare the outcomes of MIS colectomy to those of open surgery for patients with acute diverticulitis requiring urgent surgery.

Methods: The American college of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Project database was queried for all patients undergoing an urgent colectomy for acute diverticulitis between 2013 and 2018.

Compression of the Right Atrium and Inferior Vena Cava from an Extrahepatic Biloma Following Liver Trauma.

A 26-year-old male presented to a Level 1 trauma center following a motorcycle crash. Workup of his injuries demonstrated a grade 5 liver laceration with active extravasation, grade 5 kidney laceration, right apical pneumothorax, and a sternal fracture. The patient underwent hepatic artery embolization with interventional radiology (IR) followed by an exploratory laparotomy, liver packing, and small bowel resection with primary anastomosis.

Does Gender Matter: A Multi-Institutional Analysis of Viscoelastic Profiles for 1565 Trauma Patients With Severe Hemorrhage.

Background: Viscoelastic tests including thromboelastography (TEG) and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) are being used in patients with severe hemorrhage at trauma centers to guide resuscitation. Several recent studies demonstrated hypercoagulability in female trauma patients that was associated with a survival advantage. The objective of our study was to elucidate the effects of gender differences in TEG/ROTEM values on survival in trauma patients with severe hemorrhage.

Use of GlideScope in Patients Undergoing NIM Thyroidectomy.

Objectives: Thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy using the nerve integrity monitor (NIM) require proper placement of the endotracheal tube with electrodes aligned correctly within the larynx. The purpose of this study is to determine the percentage of patients who require positional adjustments of the endotracheal tube prior to beginning surgery and to understand the value of using the GlideScope to assure proper NIM tube placement within the larynx.

Methods: This prospective study examines operative data from 297 patients who underwent NIM thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy.

Effects of Simulation Video on Parental Recall of Seizure First Aid: A Quality Improvement Project.

Many parents of children do not recall anticipatory guidance on acute seizure management, which can lead to unnecessary emergency department visits. This quality improvement project evaluated if adding a video simulation of seizure first aid improved parental recall. Parents of children with seizures were randomized to standard verbal counseling or video group, which were shown a video simulation of seizure first aid.
