Background: Despite the importance of advance care planning (ACP), a process that optimizes future medical treatment and end-of-life care, for at-risk populations, rates of patient-provider ACP conversations are extremely low among Black women with breast cancer. Community health workers (CHWs) are well-positioned to support patients in engaging in ACP conversations with their providers; yet research on integrating CHWs to promote ACP is scant. The current study examined multilevel facilitators and barriers to successful ACP conversations among Black women from the perspective of providers and CHWs who serve this community.

Background: Referral to palliative medicine (PM) has been shown to improve quality of life, reduce hospitalizations, and improve survival. Limited data exist about PM utilization among racial minorities with gynecologic malignancies. Our objective was to assess differences in palliative medicine referrals and end of life interventions (within the last 30 days of life) by race and ethnicity in a diverse population of gynecologic oncology patients.

Background: Squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity (NCSCC) is a rare, challenging malignancy. Surgical resection of this tumor can cause significant facial deformity, and indications for adjuvant or organ preservation therapies are not well-described.
Objective: To examine the impact of treatment regimen on survival outcomes in NCSCC and to compare surgical to non-surgical based therapies.

Younger stroke patients may suffer worse outcomes than older patients; however, the extent to which age at stroke impacts remote areas of the brain remains unclear. The objective of this study was to determine thalamic volume changes ipsilateral to middle cerebral artery territory strokes based on age at acute ischemic stroke onset. Acute ischemic stroke patients <9 years, 9-18 years, and >18 years old were retrospectively recruited from a large quaternary care system.

Purpose: In this pilot study, DKI measures of diffusivity and kurtosis were compared in active tumor regions and correlated to radiologic response to radiotherapy after completion of 2 weeks of treatment to derive potential early measures of tumor response.
Methods: MRI and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging (MRSI) data were acquired before the beginning of RT (pre-RT) and 2 weeks after the initiation of treatment (during-RT) in 14 glioblastoma patients. The active tumor region was outlined as the union of the residual contrast-enhancing region and metabolically active tumor region.

Purpose: Our specific aim was to develop and assess the consensus-based validity of common measures for understanding health behaviors and ancestry in Florida's population subgroups and establish the feasibility of wide-scale implementation of the measures and biospecimen collection within three cancer centers' catchment areas.
Methods: Using the National Cancer Institute's Grid-Enabled Measures web-based platform and an iterative process, we developed the Florida Health and Ancestry Survey (FHAS). We then used three sampling approaches to implement the FHAS: community-engaged, panel respondent, and random digit dialing (RDD).

Cranial fasciitis (CF) is a benign (myo)fibroblastic proliferation of children. Typical presentation consists of a rapidly growing solitary mass on the temporal or parietal cranium in the first 2 years of age. CF is characterized by a rapid growth followed by a relative slowdown and even growth arrest.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignant tumor that occurs mainly in the retroperitoneum of children and young adults. In its prototypical form, DSCRT displays characteristic morphology with nested primitive small round cells in a desmoplastic stroma and a distinctive immunophenotype with polyphenotypic differentiation. However, DSCRT can also exhibit a broader clinical, histologic and immunohistochemical spectrum and, therefore, cause diagnostic difficulties.

To determine whether cognition is associated with mortality among older US adults. We studied 5,989 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey participants age 60+ in years 1999-2014 with mortality follow-up through 2015. Cognitive function was measured in one standard deviation decrements using the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), Animal Fluency (AnFl), and two Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) tests.

Despite the publication of several national/international guidelines, the optimal management of patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis (AsxCS) remains controversial. This article compares 3 recently released guidelines (the 2020 German-Austrian, the 2021 European Stroke Organization [ESO], and the 2021 Society for Vascular Surgery [SVS] guidelines) vs the 2017 European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) guidelines regarding the optimal management of AsxCS patients. The 2017 ESVS guidelines defined specific imaging/clinical parameters that may identify patient subgroups at high future stroke risk and recommended that carotid endarterectomy (CEA) should or carotid artery stenting (CAS) may be considered for these individuals.

Kidney disease is the fourth most common cause of non-AIDS-related mortality in people living with HIV. Combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) remains the cornerstone of treatment. However, little is known about the impact of cART on disease outcomes in patients with HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) and HIV-immune complex kidney disease (HIVICK).

Objective: Fatigue is among the most common complaints in community-dwelling older adults, yet its etiology is poorly understood. Based on models implicating frontostriatal pathways in fatigue pathogenesis, we hypothesized that smaller basal ganglia volume would be associated with higher levels of subjective fatigue and reduced set-shifting in middle-aged and older adults without dementia or other neurologic conditions.
Methods: Forty-eight non-demented middle-aged and older adults ( = 68.

Introduction: AO Spine Research Objectives and Common Data Elements for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy (AO Spine RECODE-DCM) is an international initiative that aims to accelerate knowledge discovery and improve outcomes by developing a consensus framework for research. This includes defining the top research priorities, an index term and a minimum data set (core outcome set and core data elements set - core outcome set (COS)/core data elements (CDE)).
