Human observers perceive distance in remarkably stable and consistent manner across response methods and experimental paradigms. Most empirical work on the problem focused exclusively on geometrical variables, such as angle of declination below the horizon (Ooi, Wu, & He, 2001), with more recent considerations of nonvisual factors, such as effort (Proffitt, 2006). Hajnal, Bunch, and Kelty-Stephen (2014) showed that in addition to the object's physical angle of declination below the horizon, nonvisual variables related to effort were utilized when making distance estimates to objects placed on a sloped ramp.

Carboxysomes are bacterial microcompartments that enhance carbon fixation by concentrating ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) and its substrate CO2 within a proteinaceous shell. They are found in all cyanobacteria, some purple photoautotrophs and many chemoautotrophic bacteria. Carboxysomes consist of a protein shell that encapsulates several hundred molecules of RuBisCO, and contain carbonic anhydrase and other accessory proteins.

Although the conterminous USA has a long history of ichthyological exploration, the description of biogeographical provinces has been ad hoc. In this study we quantitatively determined fish faunal provinces and interpreted them in the context of the geological history of North America. We also evaluated influences of major river basin occupancy and contemporary environmental factors on provincial patterns.

Introduction: Although modifications to dietary and physical activity (PA) behavior can reduce blood pressure, racial disparities in prevalence and control of hypertension persist. Psychosocial constructs (PSCs) of self-regulation, processes of change, and social support are associated with initiation and maintenance of PA in African Americans; which PSCs best predict lifestyle behavior changes is unclear. This study's objective was to examine relationships among PSC changes and postintervention changes in PA and dietary outcomes in a community-based, multicomponent lifestyle intervention.

Phenoxyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates were studied as quenching (capping) agents for living carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene (IB) at -70 °C in 40/60 (v/v) hexane/methyl chloride, catalyzed by TiCl. Quenching reactions were carried out by reactivation by TiCl of preformed difunctional -chloride-terminated polyisobutylene (PIB) or by a one-step method in which IB polymerization and quenching were conducted sequentially in the same reactor. Chain-end concentrations ranged from 0.

Protein misfolding and concomitant aggregation towards amyloid formation is the underlying biochemical commonality among a wide range of human pathologies. Amyloid formation involves the conversion of proteins from their native monomeric states (intrinsically disordered or globular) to well-organized, fibrillar aggregates in a nucleation-dependent manner. Understanding the mechanism of aggregation is important not only to gain better insight into amyloid pathology but also to simulate and predict molecular pathways.

Family stress models illustrate how communities affect youth outcomes through effects on parents and studies consistently show the enduring effects of early community context. The present study takes a different approach identifying human agency during adolescence as a potentially significant promotive factor mediating the relationship between community, parenting, and mental health. While agency is an important part of resilience, its longitudinal effects are unknown, particularly based on gender and race/ethnicity.

The yeast Rgt1 repressor inhibits transcription of the glucose transporter (HXT) genes in the absence of glucose. It does so by recruiting the general corepressor complex Ssn6-Tup1 and the HXT corepressor Mth1. In the presence of glucose, Rgt1 is phosphorylated by the cAMP-activated protein kinase A (PKA) and dissociates from the HXT promoters, resulting in expression of HXT genes.

The inland fish fauna of El Salvador and its distribution was originally described in 1925 by Samuel Hildebrand. That work has been the main source of information for freshwater fishes of El Salvador up to today. Based on the combination of an intensive literature review, electronic database searches, re-identification of museum specimens, and fieldwork, we hereby provide an updated checklist of the inland fishes of El Salvador.

Over the past two decades, research on childbirth worldwide has documented women's varied perceptions of and decision-making regarding childbirth. Scholars have demonstrated the impact of medical authority, religion, perception of risk, and access to care providers on the decisions women make about where to have their babies and with whom. Virtually all research on how women make these choices, however, has focused outside the United States.

The yeast Rgt1 repressor is a bifunctional protein that acts as a transcriptional repressor and activator. Under glucose-limited conditions, Rgt1 induces transcriptional repression by forming a repressive complex with its corepressors Mth1 and Std1. Here, we show that Rgt1 is converted from a transcriptional repressor into an activator under high glucose conditions and this occurs through two independent but consecutive events mediated by two glucose signaling pathways: (1) disruption of the repressive complex by the Rgt2/Snf3 pathway; (2) phosphorylation of Rgt1 by the cAMP-dependent protein kinase (cAMP-PKA) pathway.

Taura syndrome is an economically important disease that can cause catastrophic losses of farmed shrimp. Without effective treatments for Taura syndrome virus (TSV), one approach to managing the problem is to selectively breed shrimp populations with increased disease resistance. To better understand why some shrimp can survive exposure to TSV, information is needed on how viral loads progress and persist following infection.

Design of inhibitors for amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide aggregation has been widely investigated over the years towards developing viable therapeutic agents for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The biggest challenge seems to be inhibiting Aβ aggregation at the early stages of aggregation possibly at the monomeric level, as oligomers are known to be neurotoxic. In this regard, exploiting the metal chelating property of Aβ to generate molecules that can overcome this impediment presents some promise.

School environments that provide consistent and reliable nutrition information promote the development of healthful eating in children. High-energy, nutrient-poor beverages offered for sale to children during the school day compete with healthful choices. The primary objective of this prospective, quasiexperimental study was to encourage children to choose more healthful beverages during the school day without adversely affecting the profits realized from vending sales.

Most of our understanding of habitat use by migrating land birds comes from studies conducted at single, small spatial scales, which may overemphasize the importance of intrinsic habitat factors, such as food availability, in shaping migrant distributions. We believe that a multi-scale approach is essential to assess the influence of factors that control en route habitat use. We determined the relative importance of eight variables, each operating at a habitat-patch, landscape, or regional spatial scale, in explaining the differential use of hardwood forests by Nearctic-Neotropical land birds during migration.

Transcriptomic reprogramming is critical to the coordination between growth and cell cycle progression in response to changing extracellular conditions. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the transcription factor Gcr1 contributes to this coordination by supporting maximum expression of G1 cyclins in addition to regulating both glucose-induced and glucose-repressed genes. We report here the comprehensive genome-wide expression profiling of gcr1Delta cells.

The goal of the study was to determine which similarity coefficient and statistical method to use to produce the highest rate of correct assignment (RCA) in repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR-based bacterial source tracking. In addition, the use of standards for deciding whether to accept or reject source assignments was investigated. The use of curve-based coefficients Cosine Coefficient and Pearson's Product Moment Correlation yielded higher RCAs than the use of band-based coefficients Jaccard, Dice, Jeffrey's x, and Ochiai.
