Generative adversarial network in medical imaging: A review.

Med Image Anal

December 2019

Department of Medical Imaging, University of Saskatchewan, 103 Hospital Dr, Saskatoon, SK S7N 0W8, Canada. Electronic address:

Generative adversarial networks have gained a lot of attention in the computer vision community due to their capability of data generation without explicitly modelling the probability density function. The adversarial loss brought by the discriminator provides a clever way of incorporating unlabeled samples into training and imposing higher order consistency. This has proven to be useful in many cases, such as domain adaptation, data augmentation, and image-to-image translation.

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common and debilitating condition that can be challenging to treat. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is currently the therapeutic gold standard for treatment-resistant MDD. We tested our hypothesis that ketamine-based anesthesia for ECT results in superior improvement in treatment-resistant MDD outcomes compared with propofol-based anesthesia.

Incidence of CT Contrast Agent-Induced Nephropathy: Toward a More Accurate Estimation.

AJR Am J Roentgenol

June 2015

1 All authors: Department of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, 103 Hospital Dr, Saskatoon, SK, Canada S7N 0W8.

Objective: Acute kidney injury is common among hospitalized patients and likely leads to inflated reports of the incidence of CT contrast agent-induced nephropathy as a cause of acute kidney injury. For a more accurate estimation, we compared the incidence of acute kidney injury immediately after contrast agent administration and a few days afterward in the same population. We also controlled for a creatinine level increase starting before and continuing after CT, which may be incorrectly associated with the scan itself.

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors versus angiotensin receptor blockers for primary hypertension.

Cochrane Database Syst Rev

August 2014

Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management, University of Saskatchewan, Royal University Hospital, 103 Hospital Dr., Saskatoon, SK, Canada, S7N 0W8.

Background: Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are widely prescribed for primary hypertension (systolic blood pressure > 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg). However, while ACE inhibitors have been shown to reduce mortality and morbidity in placebo-controlled trials, ARBs have not. Therefore, a comparison of the efficacies of these two drug classes in primary hypertension for preventing total mortality and cardiovascular events is important.
