Cell cycle arrest in node cells governs ciliogenesis at the node to break left-right symmetry.

Cilia at the node generate a leftward fluid flow that breaks left-right symmetry. However, the molecular mechanisms that regulate ciliogenesis at the node are largely unknown. Here, we show that the epiblast-specific deletion of the gene encoding the BMP type 1 receptor (Acvr1) compromised development of nodal cilia, which results in defects in leftward fluid flow and, thus, abnormalities in left-right patterning.

Cone beam CT (CBCT) has become an increasingly important source of three dimensional (3D) volumetric data in clinical orthodontics since its introduction into dentistry in 1998. The purpose of this manuscript is to highlight the current understanding of, and evidence for, the clinical use of CBCT in orthodontics, and to review the findings to answer clinically relevant questions. Currently available information from studies using CBCT can be organized into five broad categories: 1, the assessment of CBCT technology; 2, its use in craniofacial morphometric analyses; 3, incidental and missed findings; 4, analysis of treatment outcomes; and 5, efficacy of CBCT in diagnosis and treatment planning.

The objectives of this study were to explore dental and dental hygiene students', graduate students', and dental professionals' preferences for certain types of gloves and the reasons for these preferences (Aim 1), as well as determining their knowledge, attitudes, and behavior concerning the use of dental gloves as a means of barrier protection (Aim 2). Data were collected from 198 dental and forty-six dental hygiene students, thirty-five graduate students, and seventy-nine dental professionals (twenty-eight dentists and fifty-one dental hygienists in private practice). The subjects responded to a self-administered anonymous survey.

Forty third-year (D3) and fourth-year (D4) dental students were recruited and asked to demonstrate their ability in managing a simulated angina attack. Students were tested on their knowledge related to emergency medical protocols, the time taken to obtain oxygen, and operation of the oxygen equipment.

Previous studies have demonstrated an inverse relationship between constitutive or stimulated collagenase expression and osteoblastic phenotype of osteogenic cells. However, the direct effects of cell-secreted collagenases on osteoblastic differentiation, and the precise contributions of the key collagenolytic MMPs, MMP-1 and -13 to the modulation of specific osteoblastic markers have not been elucidated. Although only recently introduced, chemically-modified hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have gained widespread acceptance as "redefining" dermal fillers in the fields of dermatology and cosmetic facial surgery. Although hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers have a low overall incidence of long-term side effects, occasional adverse outcomes, ranging from chronic lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory reactions to classic foreign body-type granulomatous reactions have been documented. These long-term adverse events are reviewed.

The flat bones of the skull (calvaria) develop by balanced cell proliferation and differentiation in the calvarial sutures and the bone tips. As the brain grows and the calvaria expand, cells within the sutures must remain undifferentiated to maintain suture patency, but osteoprogenitors also need to be recruited into the osteogenic fronts. The exact identity of calvarial osteoprogenitors is currently not known.
