Salivary microbiome changes distinguish response to chemoradiotherapy in patients with oral cancer.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is associated with oral microbial dysbiosis. In this unique study, we compared pre- to post-treatment salivary microbiome in patients with SCC by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and examined how microbiome changes correlated with the expression of an anti-microbial protein.

Results: Treatment of SCC was associated with a reduction in overall bacterial richness and diversity.

Integrative Risk Predictors of Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis Progression.

In this paper we propose feature selection and machine learning approaches to identify a combination of features for risk prediction of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disease progression. In a sample of 32 TMJ osteoarthritis and 38 controls, feature selection of 5 clinical comorbidities, 43 quantitative imaging, 28 biological features and was performed using Maximum Relevance Minimum Redundancy, Chi-Square and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) and Recursive Feature Elimination. We compared the performance of learning using concave and convex kernels (LUCCK), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) approaches to predict disease cure/improvement or persistence/worsening.

Galanin mediates tumor-induced immunosuppression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Since there is virtually no information on immunomodulation mediated by its ligand in the tumor microenvironment, we assessed the effects of galanin on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).

The biggest challenge to improve the diagnosis and therapies of Craniomaxillofacial conditions is to translate algorithms and software developments towards the creation of holistic patient models. This paper proposes machine learning approaches to support dentistry researchers in the context of integrating imaging modalities to analyze the morphology of tooth crowns and roots. Although various 2D platforms or 3D printing systems can guide cellular activities or aligned organizations, it remains a challenge to develop ligament-guided, 3D architectures with the angular controllability for parallel, oblique or perpendicular orientations of cells required for biomechanical support of organs. Here, we show the use of scaffold design by additive manufacturing for specific topographies or angulated microgroove patterns to control cell orientations such as parallel (0°), oblique (45°) and perpendicular (90°) angulations.

Data were collected from 218 senior dental students in one dental school (2010: 106; 2011: 112) during their nutrition class. The objectives of this study were to explore whether Dental Admission Test (DAT) training in an enrichment program for potential dental students increases the participants' Perceptual Achievement Test (PAT) and academic average (AA) scores and whether the length of the program and personal factors such as the number of disadvantages correlate with the DAT scores. Oriented long needle-like p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) crystals are successfully prepared by directional freezing of PABA solution in this work.
