Background: Recently, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to have immunomodulatory properties which hold promise for their clinical use to treat inflammatory conditions. Relative to bone marrow-derived MSCs (BMSCs), which are typically isolated from the iliac crest, we have recently demonstrated that MSCs can be predictably isolated from the alveolar bone (aBMSCs) by less invasive means. As such, the aim of this study was to characterize the immunomodulatory properties of aBMSCs relative to BMSCs.

Dental stem cells have many applications in medicine, dentistry and stem cell biology in general due to their easy accessibility and low morbidity. A common surgical manoeuvre after a tooth extraction is the dental socket curettage which is necessary to clean the alveolus and favour alveolar bone healing. This procedure can cause very low morbidity compared to bone marrow collection procedures and the collected material is normally discarded.

Biomimetically designed materials matching the chemical and mechanical properties of tissue support higher mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) adhesion. However, directing cell-specific attachment and ensuring uniform cell distribution within the interior of 3D biomaterials remain key challenges in healing critical sized defects. Previously, a phage display derived MSC-specific peptide (DPIYALSWSGMA, DPI) was combined with a mineral binding sequence (VTKHLNQISQSY, VTK) to increase the magnitude and specificity of MSC attachment to calcium-phosphate biomaterials in 2D.

Purpose: Emerging evidence indicates that bromodomains comprise a conserved class of epigenome readers involved in cancer development and inflammation. Bromodomains are associated with epigenetic modifications of gene transcription through interactions with lysine residues of histone tails. Particularly, the bromodomain and extra-terminal domain (BET) family member BRD4 has been found to be involved in the control over oncogenes, including c-MYC, and in the maintenance of downstream inflammatory processes.

Bone growth is dependent upon the presence of self-renewing progenitor cell populations. While the contribution of Tissue Nonspecific Alkaline Phosphatase (TNAP) enzyme activity in promoting bone mineralization when expressed in differentiated bone forming cells is well understood, little is known regarding the role of TNAP in bone progenitor cells. We previously found diminished proliferation in the calvarial MC3T3E1 cell line upon suppression of TNAP by shRNA, and in calvarial cells and tissues of TNAP mice.

Cationic hyperbranched polymers (HBP) were prepared by self-condensing vinyl polymerization of an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) inimer containing a quaternary ammonium group. Two types of biocompatible shells, poly(oligoethylene glycol) methacrylate (polyOEGMA) and poly(2-(methylsulfinyl) ethyl methacrylate) (polyDMSO), were grafted respectively from HBP core to form core-shell structures with low molecular weight dispersity and high biocompatibility, polyOEGMA-HBP and polyDMSO-HBP. Both of the structures showed low cytotoxicity and good siRNA complexing ability.

The periodontium, consisting of gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone, is a hierarchically organized tissue whose primary role is to provide physical and mechanical support to the teeth. Severe cases of periodontitis, an inflammatory condition initiated by an oral bacterial biofilm, can lead to significant destruction of soft and hard tissues of the periodontium and result in compromised dental function and aesthetics. Although current treatment approaches can limit the progression of the disease by controlling the inflammatory aspect, complete periodontal regeneration cannot be predictably achieved.

Background: Tissue regeneration requires a series of steps, beginning with generation of the necessary cell mass, followed by cell migration into damaged area, and ending with differentiation and integration with surrounding tissues. Temporal regulation of these steps lies at the heart of the regenerative process, yet its basis is not well understood. The ability of zebrafish to dedifferentiate mature "post-mitotic" myocytes into proliferating myoblasts that in turn regenerate lost muscle tissue provides an opportunity to probe the molecular mechanisms of regeneration.

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are an established model for investigating developmental processes, disease conditions, tissue regeneration and therapeutic targets. Previous studies have shown that tripartite motif-containing 33 protein (Trim33) functions as a chromatin reader during Nodal-induced mesoderm induction. Here we report that despite reduced proliferation, mouse ESCs deficient in remained pluripotent when cultured under non-differentiating conditions.
