Sentinel surveillance of sexually transmitted infections in South Africa: a review.

Objectives: To review studies of sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevalence in South Africa between 1985 and 2003 in selected sentinel populations. To examine how STI prevalence varies between populations and to identify the limitations of the existing data.

Methods: Studies of the prevalence of syphilis, chancroid, granuloma inguinale, lymphogranuloma venereum, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) were considered.

Effects of foot-pedal positions by inexperienced cyclists at the highest aerobic level.

The purpose of this study was to assess whether the platform foot-pedal position affected maximal oxygen intake (VO2 max) at the highest aerobic demand in cycling. 21 inexperienced cyclists completed two exercise tests, one in the "normal" platform foot-pedal position and the other in the Biopedal forefoot varus foot-pedal position, cycling on an exercise ergometer. The time between tests ranged from 1 to 3 days depending on the subject's reported fatigue and muscle soreness.

Recognition accuracy by experienced men and women players of basketball.

This study examined 30 experienced basketball players' recognition accuracy by sex, playing position (guard, forward, and center), and situations in the game of basketball. The study used a perceptual cognitive paradigm in which subjects viewed slides of structured and unstructured game situations and accurately recognized the presence or absence of the basketball. A significant difference in recognition accuracy by sex, players' position, and structure of the game situation was found.

Psychophysiological effects of nicotine abstinence and behavioral challenges in habitual smokers.

We tested the hypothesis that psychophysiological responses to behavioral challenges are enhanced by short-term abstinence from smoking. Blood pressure (BP), salivary cortisol levels, and withdrawal symptoms were measured after a period of smoking abstinence (18 h) or ad libitum smoking, during rest, and in response to acute behavioral challenges. Thirty habitual smokers (15 women and 15 men) participated in two laboratory sessions conducted on two separate days (after abstinence or ad libitum smoking).

Adrenocortical and hemodynamic predictors of pain perception in men and women.

Research has demonstrated that women report more pain than men, and clinical observations suggest that attenuated adrenocortical activity is associated with high pain sensitivity. The extent to which cortisol concentrations and hemodynamics contribute to gender differences in pain sensitivity has not been investigated. Thirty-four women and 31 men performed the hand cold pressor test (CPT).
