When scholars express concern about trust in science, they often focus on whether the public trusts research findings. This study explores a different dimension of trust and examines whether and how frequently researchers misrepresent their research accomplishments when applying for a faculty position. We collected all of the vitae submitted for faculty positions at a large research university for 1 year and reviewed a 10% sample for accuracy.

Childhood cancer-related fatigue is often viewed as an inevitable symptom of cancer and cancer treatment leading to underassessment by health care providers and self-management by families in the home and hospital environment. Parents' perspectives of the influence of childhood cancer-related fatigue on their child's day-to-day life is needed to understand how parents may or may not prioritize, report, and/or manage the fatigue symptom. This qualitative study used conventional content analysis to describe parents' observations and perspectives on the influence of fatigue in their child's day-to-day quality of life (QOL).

While the ferromagnetic properties of metallic objects, implantable medical devices, and cosmetics are well known, sand is not generally considered a consequential substance. Beaches in specific geographic regions, including the San Francisco Bay Area, have a propensity for ferromagnetic sand because of their geologic history. We describe a case in which ferromagnetic sand in a patient's hair coated the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner bore and caused significant imaging artifact, fortunately with no harm to the patient.

Respiratory exposure to multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) or asbestos results in fibrosis; however, the mechanisms to reach this end point may be different. A previous study by our group identified pulmonary effects and significantly altered messenger RNA (mRNA) signaling pathways following exposure to 1, 10, 40, and 80 µg MWCNT and 120 µg crocidolite asbestos on mouse lungs over time at 1-month, 6-month, and 1-year postexposure following pulmonary aspiration. As a continuation to the above study, this current study took an in-depth look at the signaling pathways involved in fibrosis development at a single time point, 1 year, and exposure, 40 µg MWCNT, the lowest exposure at which fibrosis was pathologically evident.

Introduction: Lingual thyroid cancer is a rare entity with a paucity of literature guiding methods of surgical treatment. Its location presents anatomic challenges with access and excision.
Objective: We present a case of T4aN1b classical variant papillary thyroid carcinoma of the lingual thyroid that was removed without pharyngeal entry.

Since the mid-1980s, researchers across the United States have uncovered high rates of sexual assault among female college students. However, to advance a better understanding of this gendered type of victimization, and to both prevent and control this problem, the research community needs to identify its major correlates. One that is consistently uncovered in North American campus survey work is negative peer support, especially that provided by male peers.

Introduction: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health issue with recent intervention focus by home visiting programs with at-risk families in the United States. Home visitors are typically required to assess IPV but feel unprepared to do so and desire training. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of a daylong IPV training on the intention to enact three key IPV behaviors (screening, making referrals, and safety planning) using the theory of planned behavior.

Background: West Virginia (WV) residents are at high risk for polypharmacy given its considerable chronic disease burdens.
Objective: To evaluate the prevalence, correlates, outcomes, and geographic variations of polypharmacy among WV Medicaid beneficiaries.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed 2009-2010 WV Medicaid fee-for-service (FFS) claims data for adults aged 18-64 (N=37,570).
Objectives: A pilot study exploring how elderly patients of a rural outpatient health clinic in Appalachia perceive design elements of the facility as imposing barriers to healthcare participation.
Background: Outpatient clinics play a critical role in the delivery of healthcare in rural settings in Appalachia. While the concept of patient participation in healthcare does not enjoy a widely adopted, standardized definition, it is believed that patients who are more actively engaged in their healthcare will potentially realize improved health outcomes.

Attachment-based theories and related research illustrate that emotion regulation develops in the context of a secure relationship between a child and caregiver. When a secure bond is broken, such as in the context of betrayal trauma, children fail to develop necessary emotion regulation skills which can lead to an array of relational problems. The current study examined the relations between betrayal trauma history, type of communication during a stressful interpersonal laboratory task, and emotion regulation difficulties in a sample of trauma-exposed adolescents.

Previous literature indicated that self-compassion enhances adaptive coping and well-being and reduces anxiety in stress-provoking situations. This research suggested that it could potentially reduce the stress response and subsequent injury risk.

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is predominantly a neonatal congenital cardiac diagnosis in which the pulmonary veins fail to return to the left atrium. The presence or absence of obstruction defines the clinical presentation, and in the setting of obstructed pulmonary veins, this diagnosis represents a true surgical emergency. Improvements in perioperative care and refinement of surgical techniques continue to allow for improved survival and decreased morbidity.

Low health literacy (HL) has been associated with several negative health outcomes, yet routine HL screening is not commonplace. This study's purpose was to determine the feasibility of incorporating HL screening into the electronic health record (EHR) of patients admitted to a large Mid-Atlantic teaching hospital. After Registered Nurse (RN) training, the HL screening was implemented for all adult patients upon admission.
