Culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families of autistic children face unique challenges in accessing services that are appropriate for their cultures and languages. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the impact of training language on caregiver skill acquisition. Therapies to revascularize ischemic tissue have long been a goal for the treatment of vascular disease and other disorders. Therapies using stem cell factor (SCF), also known as a c-Kit ligand, had great promise for treating ischemia for myocardial infarct and stroke, however clinical development for SCF was stopped due to toxic side effects including mast cell activation in patients. It has been more than three decades since the discovery of multifunctional factors, the Non-POU-Domain-Containing Octamer-Binding Protein, NonO, and the Splicing Factor Proline- and Glutamine-Rich, SFPQ. Some of their functions, including their participation in transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulation as well as their contribution to paraspeckle subnuclear body organization, have been well documented. Independent control over the Young's modulus and topography of a hydrogel cell culture substrate is necessary to characterize how attributes of its adherent surface affect cellular responses. Arbitrary, real-time manipulation of these parameters at the micron scale would further provide cellular biologists and bioengineers with the tools to study and control numerous highly dynamic behaviors including cellular adhesion, motility, metastasis, and differentiation. Although physical, chemical, thermal, and light-based strategies have been developed to influence Young's modulus and topography of hydrogel substrates, independent control of these physical attributes has remained elusive, spatial resolution is often limited, and features commonly must be pre-patterned.

Tunable lenses make it possible to measure visual sensitivity to rapid changes in optical power, surpassing the limits imposed by mechanical elements. Using a tunable lens system, we measured, for the first time, the spatiotemporal defocus sensitivity function (STDSF), and the limits of human defocus perception. Specifically, we measured defocus sensitivity using a QUEST adaptive psychophysical procedure for different stimuli (Gabor patches of different spatial frequencies, natural images, and edges) and we developed descriptive models of defocus perception.

To characterize the response of cancer cells to blockade of glucose uptake, we collected time-resolved microscopy data to track the growth of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. We then developed a mechanism-based, mathematical model to predict how a glucose transporter (GLUT1) inhibitor (Cytochalasin B) influences the growth of the MDA-MB-231 cells by limiting access to glucose.

Regenerative therapeutics for treating peripheral arterial disease are an appealing strategy for creating more durable solutions for limb ischemia. In this work, we performed preclinical testing of an injectable formulation of syndecan-4 proteoliposomes combined with growth factors as treatment for peripheral ischemia delivered in an alginate hydrogel. We tested this therapy in an advanced model of hindlimb ischemia in rabbits with diabetes and hyperlipidemia.

The monophyly of Flourensia was examined for the first time by sequencing the nuclear ITS and plastid psbA- trnH regions in 18 species of the genus, analyzing them along with representatives of the remaining genera of subtribe Enceliinae. Results showed strong evidence for the polyphyly of Flourensia identifying two well-supported groups: Flourensia, a clade from North America including the type F. laurifolia, and another clade, here designed as the new genus Austroflourensia, containing the South American species.

Background: Exposure-based therapy is an effective first-line treatment for anxiety-, obsessive-compulsive, and trauma- and stressor-related disorders; however, many patients do not improve, resulting in prolonged suffering and poorly used resources. Basic research on fear extinction may inform the development of a biomarker for the selection of exposure-based therapy. Growing evidence links orexin system activity to deficits in fear extinction and we have demonstrated that reactivity to an inhaled carbon dioxide (CO) challenge-a safe, affordable, and easy-to-implement procedure-can serve as a proxy for orexin system activity and predicts fear extinction deficits in rodents.
