Transition-metal-regulated radical cross coupling enables the selective bonding of two distinct transient radicals, whereas the catalytic method for sorting two almost identical transient radicals, especially similar benzyl radicals, is still rare. Herein, we show that leveraging dual photoredox/cobalt catalysis can selectively couple two similar benzyl radicals. Using easily accessible methylarenes and phenylacetates (benzyl N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) esters) as benzyl radical sources, a range of unsymmetrical 1,2-diarylethane classes via the 1°-1°, 1°-2°, 1°-3°, 2°-2°, 2°-3° and 3°-3° couplings were obtained with broad functional group tolerance.

Zebra finches undergo a gradual refinement of their vocalizations, transitioning from variable juvenile songs to the stereotyped song of adulthood. In a warming world, it is crucial to understand how rising temperature affects the physiology of organisms. To investigate the effect of a warming environment on the metabolism of heterothermic bats during the costly lactation period, we characterised metabolic rates in relation to roost temperature, the bats' thermoregulatory state (normothermia or torpor), time of day and age of juveniles. In a field experiment, we heated the communal roosts of a wild colony of Bechstein's bats (Myotis bechsteinii) every other day while measuring metabolic rates using flow-through respirometry.

Crystal growth of 2-(3,4,5-triphen-ylphen-yl)acetic acid () from aceto-nitrile yields a monosolvate, CHO·CHCN, of the space group 1. In the crystal, the title mol-ecule adopts a conformation in which the three phenyl rings are arranged in a paddlewheel-like fashion around the central arene ring and the carboxyl residue is oriented nearly perpendicular to the plane of this benzene ring. Inversion-symmetric dimers of O-H⋯O-bonded mol-ecules of represent the basic supra-molecular entities of the crystal structure.
