Medicare's Value-Based Purchasing Program compensates hospitals based on the quality of care provided, evaluated through a total performance score (TPS) system.
A study analyzing TPS data from various hospital groups over fiscal years 2015 and 2016 found that the overall mean TPS for 2985 hospitals decreased, with physician-owned surgical hospitals (POSH) and Kaiser Hospitals achieving higher scores.
Results indicated that POSH excelled in the Patient Experience Domain and Kaiser outperformed in the Efficiency Domain, suggesting both types of hospitals consistently provide greater value of care compared to other hospital groups.
