Objective: Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy was introduced over 25 years ago. More recently, the technique has been modified from a multiport video-assisted thoracic surgery (mVATS) to uniportal (uVATS) and robotic (rVATS), with proponents for each approach. Additionally most lobectomies are still performed using an open approach.

In many criminal justice systems, there is a clear separation for juvenile and adult defendants. However, those in between, referred to as emerging young adult defendants (ages 18-25 years), are treated as adult defendants despite a growing recognition that emerging adulthood is a distinct period in the life course. The aim of this present study is to investigate the experiences and challenges faced by emerging young adult defendants ( N = 25) in Hong Kong's adult criminal justice process.

Article Synopsis
  • The research focused on creating and validating the Resilience Style Questionnaire (RSQ), which incorporates Confucian philosophies and Chinese cultural beliefs.
  • Conducted with 1,419 college students and 214 cardiac patients in Hong Kong, it tested the reliability and validity of the RSQ, finding it effectively measures resilience through two main factors: perseverance and an optimistic outlook on life.
  • The RSQ was shown to provide additional insights into mental health beyond existing resilience scales, proving to be a reliable and valid measure for assessing resilience, particularly among populations influenced by Confucianism.

Past events are perceived to be temporally more distant when they are unlikely rather than likely to reoccur in the future. This can be because (a) future events that are unlikely to occur are perceived to be temporally remote and (b) these feelings of remoteness can generalize and influence subjective distance judgments of the events' occurrences in the past. Six studies confirmed this effect and provided insights into the processes that underlie it.

This article addresses the intersectional nature of intimate partner violence (IPV) against female marriage migrants in Mainland China-Hong Kong cross-border marriages. The author analyzes data from 15 battered female marriage migrants who share the same ethnicity as their husbands to illustrate how the immigration of female marriage migrants intricately intersects with gender, class, and culture to form a multifaceted system that traps battered marriage migrants in abusive marriages. It is proposed that marriage migration, as a distinct form of migration, involves certain intrinsic risk factors that make marriage migrants particularly vulnerable to IPV.

Article Synopsis
  • The study found that microRNA-199a (miR-199a) is down-regulated in testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) due to promoter hypermethylation, with both miR-199a and miR-214 being co-expressed in cancer cells and patient tissues.
  • Treatment with 5-aza increased the expression of these microRNAs, and silencing the DNMT1 gene restored their levels, suggesting a link between DNA methylation and their expression.
  • The research highlights a regulatory network involving miR-199a, miR-214, PSMD10, TP53, and DNMT1, indicating potential targets for TGCT therapy.
