Bubbles in the Box: Recurrent Pneumothorax From Bronchopleural Fistula in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

When considering rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-associated pulmonary diseases, interstitial lung disease and pleural disease are the most common RA-associated pulmonary manifestations while spontaneous pneumothorax and bronchopleural fistula (BPF) are among the extremely rare ones. To the best of our knowledge, all the previous reports of RA-associated BPFs were attributed to peripherally located pulmonary nodules that necrotized, burst into the pleural cavity, and eventually lead to the fistula formation. However, we hereby present the first case of BPF in an RA patient that formed in the absence of any underlying rheumatic pulmonary nodules.

Barriers and Facilitators to Colorectal Cancer Screening Within a Hispanic Population.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cancer cause of death among US Hispanics. CRC screening among the Hispanic population is lower compared with non-Hispanic Whites.

Method: The purpose of this qualitative, exploratory study was to better understand the barriers and facilitators of CRC screening and preference for stool-based testing collection methods among the predominantly Hispanic population of El Paso, Texas.

The Impact of "Mom/Dad of the Day" Cards, Newborn Heart Auscultation, and Father Skin-to-Skin Care on Parent-Newborn Bonding.

Texas Tech Pediatrics at Northwest Texas Hospital System in Amarillo, Texas, currently practices giving "Mom/Dad of the Day" cards to all new parents, offering the opportunity for fathers to auscultate the newborn heart sound, and encouraging maternal and paternal skin-to-skin contact. New parents were asked to fill out 2 anonymous surveys regarding these practices. Survey results showed statistically significant positive responses by the parents for subjective improvement in fetal sleep and feeding as well as parental confidence and preparedness for taking care of their newborn.

Phacomatosis Pigmentovascularis: Simple Presentation of a Not So Simple Dermatological Condition.

Cutaneous vascular malformations are rare disorders that are often confused with more common infantile hemangiomas. We report the case of a female infant who presented with phacomatosis pigmentovascularis type IIA with features of Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome.

Outcomes Following Isolated Posterior Interosseous Nerve Neurectomy: A Systematic Review.

Background: Posterior interosseous nerve neurectomies (PINN) are an option in the treatment of chronic dorsal wrist pain. However, the literature describing PINN consists primarily of small case series, and the procedure is typically done as an adjunct treatment; therefore, the outcomes of the PINN itself are not well known. We performed a systematic review of the literature to provide characteristics of patients following a PINN.

The Deltoid Lift: A Comparison Study of Exposure Area in Proximal Humeral Approaches.

Background: Adequate exposure of the proximal humerus is necessary to address atypical or complex proximal humerus fractures and orthopedic tumors. Surgical management may be difficult through existing approaches due to their limited nature and the delicate neurovascular anatomy of the shoulder. The deltoid lift, a previously described extensile approach, can be incorporated into the surgeon's armamentarium as an alternative exposure to the proximal humerus.

Acute Cutaneous Necrosis: A Guide to Early Diagnosis and Treatment.

Acute cutaneous necrosis is characterised by a wide range of aetiologies and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, warranting complex considerations in management. Early recognition is imperative in diagnosis and management of sudden gangrenous changes in the skin. This review discusses major causes of cutaneous necrosis, examines the need for early assessment, and integrates techniques related to diagnosis and management.

Calcitonin-Negative Neuroendocrine Tumor of the Thyroid.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the thyroid are rare; the most common type is medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). They are derived from parafollicular cells (C-cells) that usually express calcitonin, chromogranin, and carcinoembryonic antigen. Calcitonin-negative NETs of the thyroid are extremely rare, and the origin of these tumors is unclear.

A Comparison of the Characteristics of Acupuncture- and Non-Acupuncture-Preferred Consumers: A Secondary Analysis of NHIS 2012 Data.

Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the National Health Interview Survey Sample Adult File and Adult Alternative Medicine datasets collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during 2012.
