Modeling the importance of physician training in practice location for Ohio otolaryngologists.

J Osteopath Med

September 2024

Department of Primary Care, Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, 1 Ohio University, Athens, OH, USA.

Context: Underserved communities in southeastern Ohio and Appalachia face significant healthcare accessibility challenges, with the Midwest offering a lower density of healthcare providers compared to coastal regions. Specifically, underserved communities in southeastern Ohio and Appalachia are disadvantaged in otolaryngology care.

Objectives: This analysis aims to identify factors that lead otolaryngologists to a respective practice location, and if any of that influence comes from where otolaryngologists completed their medical education.

Background: The effectiveness of hospital-based transitional opioid programs (TOPs), which aim to connect patients with substance use disorders (SUD) to ongoing treatment in the community following initiation of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment in the hospital, hinges on successful patient transitions. These transitions are enabled by strong partnerships between hospitals and community-based organizations (CBOs). However, no prior study has specifically examined barriers and facilitators to establishing SUD care transition partnerships between hospitals and CBOs.

University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, Facundo Bueso Building (FB-003) 17 Ave. Universidad STE 1701, San Juan, PR, 00925-2537, USA.

We ask how environmental justice and urban ecology have influenced one another over the past 25 years in the context of the US Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program and Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) project. BES began after environmental justice emerged through activism and scholarship in the 1980s but spans a period of increasing awareness among ecologists and environmental practitioners. The work in Baltimore provides a detailed example of how ecological research has been affected by a growing understanding of environmental justice.

For some transgender people, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is "an ontological necessity for a livable life" (Fondén, 2020, p. 29). Some trans people engage in do-it-yourself (DIY) HRT (aka "DIYers") because of care barriers, including medication costs, difficulty accessing healthcare providers, and mistrust in professionalized medical systems.

Reductions in Motor Unit Firing are Associated with Clinically Meaningful Leg Extensor Weakness in Older Adults.

Calcif Tissue Int

January 2024

Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological Institute, Ohio University, 250 Irvine Hall, 1 Ohio University, Athens, OH, 45701, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Weakness from sarcopenia poses serious risks for older adults, leading to functional limitations and disability, and reduced motor unit firing rates (MUFRs) have been linked to this weakness.* -
  • A study involving older and young adults showed that weaker older adults had significantly lower MUFRs, suggesting that age-related declines in MUFRs correlate with reduced strength and mobility.* -
  • The research established that a decrease in MUFRs can lead to a 11-26% strength loss in older adults, highlighting the important connection between MUFRs and the aging process in terms of muscle function.*

This publication, eleventh in the series, evaluates the safety of NFCs characterized by primary alcohol, aldehyde, carboxylic acid, ester and lactone constituents derived from terpenoid biosynthetic pathways and/or lipid metabolism. The scientific-based evaluation procedure published in 2005 and updated in 2018 that relies on a complete constituent characterization of the NFC and organization of the constituents into congeneric groups.

This publication, ninth in the series and related to the ninth publication, describes the affirmation of the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status for NFCs with propenylhydroxybenzene and allylalkoxybenzene constituents under their conditions of intended use as flavoring ingredients added to food. The Panel's procedure applies the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) concept and evaluates relevant data on absorption, metabolism, genotoxic potential and toxicology for the NFCs themselves and their respective constituent congeneric groups.

Introduction: Opioid-related hospitalizations have risen dramatically, placing hospitals at the frontlines of the opioid epidemic. Medicaid expansion and 1115 waivers for substance use disorders (SUDs) are two key policies aimed at expanding access to care, including opioid use disorder (OUD) services. Yet, little is known about the relationship between these policies and the availability of hospital based OUD programs.

Restrictive eating is associated with several poor health outcomes. Exteroceptive sensory modalities, including taste and smell, are employed while eating and disturbances in exteroceptive sensitivity may influence eating behavior. Meal-related gastrointestinal disturbances, such as early satiety and postprandial fullness, are well-documented in eating disorders and may influence eating behavior.

Traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula: A case report.

June 2022

Kettering Health Network Diagnostic Radiology Residency, 405 W. Grand Ave, Dayton, OH 45405, USA.

Direct carotid-cavernous fistulas are a rare complication of craniofacial trauma that often presents with proptosis, chemosis, and other visual symptoms. Disruption of blood flow from a carotid-cavernous fistula can cause cortical and cranial nerve ischemia which requires emergent intervention. Upon clinical suspicion of a carotid-cavernous fistula, patients should undergo computed tomography angiography (CTA) or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) if no other etiology is suspected.

July 2021

Department of Genetics and Institute for Biomedical Informatics, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, 3400 Civic Center Blvd, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA.

The Ontology for Biomedical Investigations (OBI) underwent a focused review of assay term annotations, logic and hierarchy with a goal to improve and standardize these terms. As a result, inconsistencies in W3C Web Ontology Language (OWL) expressions were identified and corrected, and additionally, standardized design patterns and a formalized template to maintain them were developed. We describe here this informative and productive process to describe the specific benefits and obstacles for OBI and the universal lessons for similar projects.
